Is There Still Hope For The BlackBerry Storm 9570 Refresh?

November 4, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 9 Comments

I was talking to an friend that has had the original BlackBerry Storm 9530 since the day that it came out.  They are one of the many BlackBerry Storm users that stuck it out through all of the issues that the Storm had and has actually become quite fond of the device.  As fond of the BlackBerry Storm as my friend is, the 9530 is over 2-years old and they are ready for an upgrade.

The problem for them, acutally, the problem for RIM, is that there isn’t a new BlackBerry Storm for folks with original BlackBerry Storm to upgrade to.  The BlackBerry Storm2 is over a year old and it doesn’t support BlackBerry 6.  Original BlackBerry Storm users that want a new BlackBerry, but, want to stay with the touch screen form factor are forced to either switch carriers and get the BlackBerry Torch, or upgrade to the BlackBerry Storm2 which really isn’t that much of an upgrade at all.

My friend said that they would absolutely get another BlackBerry Storm if one comes out, but, their Storm 9530 is only its last leg from wear and tear and that they can’t hold out waiting any longer without knowing that new Storm is coming.  Their plan is to get either a Droid Incredible or a Droid X now, and possibly switch back to the BlackBerry if a new Storm comes out…

There are a lot of BlackBerry Storm users, myself included, in the same boat as my friend…  We would get a BlackBerry Storm3  if it were offered, but, aren’t willing to wait too long after our 2-year plans are up to get a new device.  A lot of people say that they will get a new phone until the Storm3 comes out and then switch back, however, that rarely happens once that 30-day return policy has passed.

If there is actually a BlackBerry Storm 9570 coming out, RIM needs to go ahead an announce it.  There are millions of BlackBerry Storm 9530 users coming up on their 2-year plans and are ready to upgrade.  If there isn’t going to be another touch screen BlackBerry for them to upgrade to, it could be a long winter as far as brand churn goes…

Motorola Droid + Bath Time = Using Blackberry Storm

April 1, 2010 by Rod 4 Comments

Imagine looking at a happy baby about 17 months old holding your mobile phone while sitting in the bathtub. That was the exact moment I lost my Motorola Droid and went back to the Blackberry Storm. The sound of water running in the bathtub drowns out the sound coming from the Droid’s speaker, my solution I had it next to the tub during bath time. (Note to self buy one of the recommended speakers from Brent) I was listening to Buzz out Loud (BOL) podcast and the podcast went silent. This is not abnormal on a Droid if a new message arrives but the silence was a bit too long. While rinsing the soap form the hair of one kid I looked over to see my smiling son holding my phone as the notification light rapidly flashed green. UGGGGHHHHH!

Rumor Alert: Is Verizon Discontinuing The BlackBerry Storm?

February 23, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 19 Comments

Update:  It looks like the rumor is correct.  The Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530 and 3 other BlackBerry devices are being end of lifed…

Word on the street (quite literally, actually) is that investors and analysts believe that there is speculation among traders about a report that indicated orders for the BlackBerry Storm were cut or canceled. The name of the research shop that produced the note wasn’t immediately known and both RIM and Verizon either declined to comment, or, don’t have a comment at this time.

My initial take on this rumor is that it is probably true, and, it really isn’t that big of a deal…

BlackBerry Tip: How To Set Speed Dial On The BlackBerry Storm

January 4, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 4 Comments

If the number of questions I’ve gotten about how to set the speed dial, how to change speed dial entries, and why there are only 8 available slots for speed dial on the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Storm2 is an indication of how RIM did over the holiday season…  RIM did pretty well.

Instead of trying to answer everyone individually I figured that I would create this little post to tell you how to quickly and easily manage the speed dial on your BlackBerry Storm or BlackBerry Storm2.

There Are Probably More BlackBerry Storm Users Than You Think

November 4, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 11 Comments

An interesting report from ComScore on Touchscreen Mobile Phone Adoption came out yesterday and a few things in the report kind of surprised me.

  1. Touchscreen mobile phone adoption grew at a blistering rate up 159%.  Nothing really shocking about that.
  2. The iPhone dominates  the market with 32.9% market share.  Yeah, yeah… Sounds about right.
  3. The BlackBerry sits in 4th place with 7% of the market, only 1.7% behind the number 2 LG Dare and 0.8% behind the 3rd place LG Voyager. Completely wasn’t expecting that.

Of the 10 devices listed, the BlackBerry Storm received the most bad press, deservedly so, by a long shot.  For the Storm to come in 4th when it was such a bad device at launch and having been on the market for a lot less time than the three devices in front of it was more than just surprising.  It was actually a bit shocking.

This is probably due to the strength of the BlackBerry brand because no one else could have had a device suck that much, yet sell so well.  Hopefully the BlackBerry Storm2 will do better by the brand than did it’s predecessor.  Every report that I’ve heard about the BlackBerry Storm2 goes something like, “You know, it’s really not that bad“.  If that sentiment remains I think RIM will view the BlackBerry Storm2 as a success.

Verizon Pushes Bing To BlackBerry Storm

November 3, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 24 Comments

If you are a BlackBerry Storm user you may have already noticed a new installer icon on your device.  Verizon partnered with Microsoft and is pushing Bing out to the BlackBerry Storm.  Bing comes pre-installed on the BlackBerry Storm2, but, not wanting original Storm users feeling left out, Verizon is making sure that everyone with a touchscreen BlackBerry bearing the Verizon logo is included.

For those of you that don’t want Bing on your BlackBerry Storm simply hide the installer icon.  Unfortunately you cannot delete the icon which kind of sucks, however, the space it takes up is negligible.  RIM, you should really give users the ability to delete unwanted carrier pushed installer icons.  Not doing so really ticks people off and, right now, you need all the good will towards your brand as you can get.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 Gets OS 5 Update

October 27, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 27 Comments

Verizon’s official announcement of the  the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 wasn’t the only big BlackBerry news coming out of the largest wireless company in the nation today.  They’ve also released BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.328 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530.

A little credit goes to Verizon for actually releasing OS 5 for the BlackBerry Storm before releasing the BlackBerry Storm2.  I am sure that a bunch of head to head BlackBerry Storm with OS 5.0.0.328 vs. BlackBerry Storm2 reviews will hit the web in the next 24 hours or so, but we’ve heard that even though the Storm2 has clear hardware advantages over the original Storm, the new OS 5 update gives the original Storm many of the same OS enhancements coming in the Storm2.

You can find a list of some of the OS 5.0.0.328 enhancements after the jump.
