I was reading a comment from a RIMarkable reader that calls himself EvilHomer about why he feels Verizon will never gain an edge as far as BlackBerry devices are concerned over GSM based carriers. Although I don’t agree with every point, I think he is dead on for the most part.
His post really made me think about just how Verizon has been able to get by with their strategy of releasing new BlackBerry devices almost a year behind their GSM competitors and doing very well for themselves while doing so.
His post also made me think about how this time is coming to an end for Verizon.

I work for a company where almost everyone carries some type of mobile smart device with them. The vast majority carry a BlackBerry and we are on a corporate Verizon plan. I would say that over the passed few months, a lot of my coworkers have switched from their BlackBerry 7250 or BlackBerry 7130e devices to the Motorola Q. Is there a trend starting?
Now, I should point out, I don’t work for a small company and I am not talking about just a few people here and there that have dropped their BlackBerrys for the Motorola Q. I have seen dozens of folks that have carried BlackBerry devices for years make the switch, most of whom admit that the Q is not as reliable as the BlackBerry, however, they have no intentions of coming back and almost all say that the Q isn’t that bad.

I just read a interesting and telling thread that asks the question “What non-business uses do you have for your BB?” BlackBerry Forums new member mantczak doesn’t have a business need for a BlackBerry 7250 and wants to know what features the BlackBerry has that are not geared towards a business user.
As you follow the thread and weed out all the uses that are truly not related to business the list honestly is relatively small. Using your BlackBerry to play games, as a flashlight, and to upset your spouse appear to be the most common replies.
I have a question… If you didn’t use your BlackBerry for business at all, would you still use it?

Mark Rejon from BlackBerry Forums has released detailed instructions on configuring your Verizon BlackBerry 7250 to use the EVDO high speed broadband network.
Many BlackBerry users have swapping their existing BlackBerry devices for the new BlackBerry 7130e just to take advantage of the ability to tether the handheld to a laptop as a high speed broadband modem. The drawback for many, however, is that the 7130e is a candybar style BlackBerry that uses Suretype. Although I love the slimmer 71xx series BlackBerry devices, many just like the full QWERTY keyboard of the traditional devices.
The configuration process does require an upgrade to BlackBerry Desktop 4.1 and to BlackBerryOS 4.0.2.41 or later. You will need to give Verizon customer service a call and you should be prepared to spend upwards of 30 to 45 minutes to get everything working. The upgrade has been confirmed to work for business customers at this point only and there are rumors that it won’t work for non-business consumers until Q1 06.
