Garmin Figured It Out. Subscription Based GPS Sucks! Will Verizon Catch On?

There is a good chance that you’ve heard by now that Garmin is now offering Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry for a one time charge of $99.99 for the entire time you own your BlackBerry instead of the $10 per month fee that they used to charge.

To make a long story short, subscription based GPS service on your mobile phone sucks and Garmin finally figured that out. Most people that really need GPS bad enough to pay a monthly charge for it should go out and buy a dedicated GPS device that, quite, frankly, will be better than a phone with GPS.

Verizon would be smart to take this approach as well. As I’ve said before, I’d be willing to bet that more BlackBerry using Verizon subscribers would be willing to pay a one time fee for GPS than would the number willing to pay a recurring monthly fee.

Why Doesn’t Verizon Support VCast On Their BlackBerrys?

As big a fan as I am of Verizon’s network, I’ve never really understood why the do some of the things they do. Some of their practices just plain don’t make sense. At least not to me.

We know that Verizon locks the GPS down in their BlackBerrys. We may not like it, however, they can and do charge you a premium to use their brand GPS service. I understand this… Don’t like it, but, understand it.

Conversely, Verizon BlackBerry users don’t have any access to VCast, Verizon’s 3G streaming media service. It is safe to say that both the BlackBerry Pearl and the BlackBerry Curve are attractive to consumers… Consumers who are more likely to pay for VCast than those who pay for VZNavigator. Why doesn’t Verizon offer these services? This, I don’t understand.

Free BlackBerry Download: Countdown Timer For BlackBerry

After a long hard day of hardly posting we were going through the BlackBerry threads before we called it a night and came across this free BlackBerry download via BerryReview.com.

The folks over at www.northcubed.com have created Countdown Timer for BlackBerry and are offering as a free BlackBerry download which you can download to your device OTA.

Usage is simple enough, start the application, set a countdown period and select start, you can toggle pause using the spacebar and when the countdown completes there’s an unobtrusive 2.5 second vibrate to let you know you should be wrapping up whatever you’re doing.

We’ve got more screen shots after the jump.
