What Do You Think Of Facebook For BlackBerry 1.6?

June 8, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 41 Comments

I installed Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones version 1.6 on my BlackBerry Storm this passed Friday and, after an extended weekend of posting status updates and uploading pictures at the Capital Jazz Fest in Maryland, I’ve got to say that I am pretty impressed with the app. The only big thing that I think is missing is Chat.

What do you think of the new BlackBerry Facebook app?

Wish all BB apps worked this well. Very much improved visually and technically, but it still works. Really impressive slideshow for pics!

Huge improvement, but still feel that there is a few things that they can do to improve the application usability, a few features was added, and all of a sudden I have to go back and forth to do things.

I really like it, but, I think that I will ned to start carrying around a charger with me in my purse. I don’t think that Facebook itself is a big battery drain, but, I find myself constantly looking at updates and posting pictures.

I really like what has been done to the app. The only thing I don’t like is that the first screen is the status updates. When I see a notification pop up, the thing I want do is read it

This app seems to cause the core functions (contacts, messaging to crash) on my device. I have heard of someone else experiencing the same symptoms and I believe I attribute this to the syncing with high number of contacts in both the Facebook and the messaging system (Exchange, Notes, etc). This issue occurs on both 1.5 and 1.6. An example of the message app crash is as follows: uncaught exception: net_rim_bb_messaging_app

Sometimes it becomes so bad that you can’t even dial a phone number that exists in your address book, because it tries to look up the contact and crashes.

Works great for me. Only complaint is that there is no “clear” button like there used to be to clear your status – unless I’m missing something.

Really annoying that it defaults to status updates rather than notifications for its initial view, and agreed that it is very slow. 1.5 seemed a lot more reliable.

I can no longer delete a large block of updates using the touch screen on Storm. I can only use the menu to delete one update at a time which I think is a glitch…so in that sense it’s very annoying. I like a clean, clutter free update page and now I can’t clean it out.

Why can’t I comment when someone writes on my wall? The only thing that I can do is post on their wall!

    Eq:
~ I get a notification that someone has wrote on my wall.
~ I reply where it says “Write something…”
~ It goes directly to their wall and not underneath what they wrote.

SO annoying and confuses the hell out of everyone that I reply to.

AND, when someone comments on MY wall…..I get a notification with a link…..but I’m unable to reply directly from the app.

I can’t even go to the FB Mobile site on my Storm browser and “comment”…only wall-to-wall.

But I CAN comment on people’s status updates.

I can’t figure this out to save my life.

    Found this:

“The new Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones makes it even easier to share life’s special moments while you’re on-the-go.

    * NEW! View your friends’ highlights like status updates, photo uploads, comments and wall posts.
    * NEW! Check out your friends’ profiles with access to status updates, wall posts, friends and recently added pictures.
    * NEW! Open recently added photos, entire albums, or tag photos of friends. You can even comment on pictures!
    * Receive instant notifications on your BlackBerry smartphone’s home screen.
    * Send/receive message or wall posts, pokes and friend requests.
    * Update your status, view and comment on your friends’ status.
    * Share photos from your BlackBerry smartphone with tags/comments and post to Facebook with just one click.
    * Connect your Facebook friends with your BlackBerry Address Book – including profile picture integration to bring new meaning to caller ID.
    * Stay organized with birthday reminders and event integration into your BlackBerry Calendar.
    ”

So apparently I’m not an idiot….because that says nothing about the ability to comment on wall posts. Only on status update and pics, as I said. How am I the first to notice this?!

Generally, I like the update — I really enjoying seeing scrolling updates in this version versus a long load time for a more static appearing page.

I used to get the messaging errors mentioned here, but that was with the old FaceBook and they persisted after I deleted the application, so I wonder if the FB app is the real culprit.

I was burned with the last update for syncing to calendar and contacts, so I turned that off.

Does it work the same way? And kill battery life and memory?

Overall I think the user experience and user interface changes are a step forward BUT since upgrading I’ve been having serious performance issues with my BB overall. Not sure what’s going on, maybe a memory leak, but many other core functions and applications have started choking randomly, sometimes to the point where the only option is a battery pull. Also my battery life is tanking. I have to suspect that it was the 1.6 upgrade that started this mess because the issues cropped up immediately following install.

Can’t clear status without updating. Can’t comment on wall posts. Slow. Waiting for the next update. This one feels more like a Beta release.

I hate the 1.6 for Bold. It is excruciatingly slow. It’s pretty much unusable unless I have nothing else to do but wait for FB on BB. I can’t just check the message and get out. I have to jump in and tread water for a while, then slowly climb back out. Painful.

It’s pretty good, except for these things:

I can’t comment on my own Wall Posts anymore. If I reply to the comment, it just posts on my friend’s Wall, rather than underneath what they posted on my Wall.

I can no longer clear my status. I have to update it with a new status.

The app is a little slow.

Why is that and what can i do to receive notifications such as friend request, received message, and so on?

The only complaint I have is not being able to comment on wall posts. It directs me to a link to view the “comment thread,” I proceed to “Get Link,” but that doesn’t bring me to the thread! It brings me my Facebook Home page, and no where does it say anything about the thread. It’s very frustrating; I don’t want to have to send another wall post, I want to post a comment!

I installed the latest version and regret it. It is incredibly slow. I need to find a way to back out of the upgrade and go to the previous 1.5.x version.

    Nonsense..

    Can’t check your message folder…

The notification process is schizophrenic and in need of work

And as other posters have said above it’s filled with all sorts of half completed operations.

A little shy of a joke but not by much

Writing thus on my BB tour 9630 now. Fetching photos is extremely slow even with full EV DO signal, uploading photos and sending messages as well. Otherwise I don’t mind it at all. But I really hate how slow it is. Sometimes its just better to use the browser 🙂 Faster!
