Verizon Wireless still isn’t the nation’s largest Wireless provider. The number one spot still belongs to AT&T. Verizon did, however, make the most money in Q2 posting the industries highest Q2 revenue numbers coming in at $12.1 billion. This is roughly $85 million more than AT&T made.
Verizon also dropped its industry leading churn rate down to 1.12% down from 1.3% last year. I am going to go out on a limb and say that churn will rise modestly in Q3 as AT&T just released the iPhone 3G at a very attractive price point.
This is two quarters in a row that Verizon has made more money than AT&T so apparently, being the biggest doesn’t necessarily mean that you are the best.

…churn may drop, but i doubt by much. the cost of breaking their agreements is likely to put a damper on switching. not to mention, all vzw customers know that att coverage is horrible. how could anyone go back to that?!
Verizon makes the most money because they charge the most.
Verizon is a very well run company. I do agree with argonnj that part of the reason why they make the most money is because they charge the most.
However, they are able to do that because they are viewed as having the most stable, reliable coverage. If they ever are knocked off of that perch, then they will have hell to pay from customers or else will have to lower their fees.
Additionally, I would say that VZW is very astute in their marketing. They have a very pervasive ad campaign that drives their message home.
I would say, though, that once the Verizon/Alltel merger is approved, then VZW will once again become the largest wireless carrier in America.
Of course the high standing of VZW is just one more reason why it’s just plain dumb for RIM to not drop the latest and greatest releases concurrently on GSM and CDMA. But watch RIM release the Bold on ATT and then wait about a year to release it on VZW even though there will be huge sales to be had.
I think Verizon is making a serious humongous bet on the Thunder
It isn’t the Verizon that is making the bet. The Thunder will do well. It is RIM…
The BlackBerry Bold on Verizon would do ridiculously well.
Is VZW that much more expensive than AT&T?
…@ Greg
not really. the larger differences b/t the two lie in network technology (GSM vs. CDMA — which will change eventually, anyway) and availability of features. vzw has a habit of locking down certain features that its gsm counterparts dont (e.g. – gps navigation) and requiring dataplans be purchased before you can even make a phone call with the phone (with gsm based phones, you can just buy the phone and use the PIM / phone features w/ out the use of data).
