I don’t know… Maybe it is just me, but, I was expecting more from the iPhone 3G S. Is a better camera and MMS enough to make you replace the 3G you bought just last year? Has anything been added to the 3G S that will make that BlackBerry user that was holding out say “Now I am ready to get an iPhone”?
Personally I think that the Palm Pre will cause more trouble for RIM than the iPhone 3G S, but, that is for another post. I do believe, however, that the price drop on the iPhone 3G means that we will see a ‘ginormous’ number of iPhones sold this summer and that is probably a bigger problem for RIM than the technology in the iPhone 3G S.
You are such a fanboy for the Blackberry. You know that the Pre really has no chance against RIM so you throw out that Palm is more of a threat to try to make this Blackberry commercial that you call a blog sound legitimate.
The argument over iPhone being far to superior to the Blackberry has already been won and the iPhone 3G S improves upon the 3G that was already way better than the Blackberry.
With every iphone update, all the iphone inadequencies that BB fanboys throw out when trying to justify their aging platform seem to be vanishing. Copy and paste, MMS, and video where all fan boy favs when it came to bashing apple. Now that they are gone, what’s left. The iphone already creams the BB when it comes to Exchange when only running on BIS. What’s next BB fanboys, tell me. By the way, when is the next, buggy as hell, BB coming out.
It cracks me up when people come to website named RIMarkable, the official unofficial weblog and not think that the author really likes BlackBerry.
I do have a question though… When you say that the argument over the iPhone being far superior the BlackBerry has already been won, what sources do you determine this from? Last time I checked the iPhone doesn’t sell as well as the BlackBerry and is less profitable than the BlackBerry.
Robb,
Really? “Has anything been added to the 3G S that will make that BlackBerry user that was holding out say “Now I am ready to get an iPhone”?“?
I strongly recommend you do some research before posting off-the-cuff opinions. It makes you look bad. I won’t waste everyone’s time with long lists… just the obvious:
– A touch-screen that actually works.
– 30fps VGA Video recording with on-device editing capability.
– 7.2Mbps HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
– Up to 10 hours video.
– An AppStore that actually has applications.
I understand that you’re a Blackberry fanboy… that’s cool. I still have my Blackberry and agree that it has a lot of good features, but I use my iPhone to do so many other things than just check e-mail and send text messages.
My $0.02,
Someone just answer this one question: with all of the cool features of the iPhone, and I admit there are quite a few, why can’t the device handle running multiple applications at once? It makes no sense considering it is built on OSX (UNIX) which handles multiple applications very well. Is Apple concerned about the speed of applications if they allow multiple applications to run? “Look at how fast the iPhone does one thing at a time.”
Research… What makes you think that I didn’t do research?
I ask that question again… What about this list makes the BlackBerry user that was holding out for an iPhone say “Now, I’ve got to go out and get one”?
My opinion, based on what I’ve read about the 3G S, is that that it isn’t that big of a deal compared to the 3G. I am sure that you and others may disagree, but, the thing about opinions is that everyone gets one.
The $99 3G is bigger news to me than the introduction of the 3G S.
* Capacity – For the first time, the iPhone has reached a capacity that can hold my entire itunes music collection plus several movies and tons and tons of apps.
* New camera with video – As a photographer and even more so, video editor, the iPhones new 3 mp camera is a welcome feature. Increased still image resolution and also the ability to shoot 30fps VGA video, edit it down to the exact moment you want to show, and upload it to youtube is just plain cool. Or as a buddy of mine would say, “Deluxe!”
* iPhone OS 3.0 – Copy and paste, search, push…all features my blackberry has had and one of the biggest reasons I couldn’t make the switch before.
* Battery life – This is just speculated as Apple generally pads their battery life numbers a bit. But it’s supposed to be better. And even currently, my long trusted blackberry curve has to be charged every other day or sometimes every day.
* It’s an apple product – I’ve used a mac for my home computing for years and it will always be simpler from Apple product to Apple product, to sync my contacts, calendar, aswell as music and movies because of this fact.
Robb,
BB fan or not you must be real that a thread “The iPhone 3G S Is No Big Deal” is going to bite you in the ass. Just like all the ignorance which kept blasting a then a unreleased iPhone version one which came back with a vengeance to bite all those in the ass. Time to relax and admit the iPhone is the real deal and no one yet has out Apple’d Apple. Heck Apple even gave everyone a head start with the first iPhone announcing it 6 months before release. Robb come on the BB’s are darn good devices too, they have been there before the iPhone came along, but you have to admit the technology on the iPhone, a handheld computer far surpasses anything RIM’s currently got and just when you think you’ve found a limitation with the iPhone, because it is a handheld computer, Apple has the ability to remove the limitation with a software update.
You see right along I have been cheering for RIM to take control of their devices and software, take control away from the service providers, RIM has not and partly because RIM has not done so they are being held back from what Apple has shown to be the current state of the art.
Again RIM makes good BB devices, and the BB backend is a good idea (when it’s up and not down) However Apple is driving the smartphone market, downplaying the iPhone by “The iPhone 3G S Is No Big Deal” IMO shows someone who is missing the big picture OR is trying to wish reality away, no offence.
True that iPhone 3GS is not impressive since iPhone is already in a excellent platform. When it is good, you make it better, not replace everything just for the hack of it. If you notice, the live cycle of iPod in the past many generations, it improve a little at a time. Unlike Microsoft (and a little of RIM), adding copied features just to lure people in. Of course, users become testers…
Sorry to say the fact, BlackBerry has very little improvement over time. Why BlackBerry making more money? Because they invest their money in their own pocket, neither the software nor hardware. Happy in the short term but bad idea in the long run.
RIM, please go back to the drawing board and find out what you are good at and what not. Spend sometime to make a “real” renovation, not a copy cat or conservative idiot. Or you’ll be the next Palm.
For instance, Palm came up with touch screen but BlackBerry thinks qwerty is better. iPhone shows up, BlackBerry suddenly jump in with a touch screen after so many years of qwerty? Why? Copy cat.
Apple didn’t invent portable music player or smartphone but they make it good. The credit goes to the inventor, history will show who used to be the best. However, money goes to the own who actually last and win.
I’ll stand up for Robb on this one…and I’m an owner of a BB Storm (I’ve used the Curve, Pearl, etc. in the past), an iPhone 3G, and now the Pre.
There isn’t any ‘WOW’ factor that has me thinking I should upgrade to the 3GS version. While there are improvements, to justify upgrading from the 3G version and shell out a few hundred if you have a 2 year contract isn’t worth it to me, and I think that’s what Robb is pointing out here. It’s not that they didn’t improve it, just nothing to go stand on line around the corner for if you already sport a 3G model. I do think that ground breaking news for the new model would have been it’s ability to multi-task. It’s a disappointment for me when using the device. Knock RIM all you want, but I can multi-task on my device and email is second to none. For me, the iPhone is a “toy.”
Now, if someone told me that the device was available on another network other than AT&T, then we’d have something here (a better “toy”). I reside where AT&T used to headquarter their operations, and service sucks here. I get more dropped phone calls than a receptionist with 3 inch nails. Full bars and cannot connect? Comon’.
As for the Pre…well, well, well.
Just for the record….for all the BB fan boys and all the Apple cult activists…
The 3g aint sh!t.
The OS is updated to great speeds…but that’s about it….sorry
So……..my response to BB haters? Watch my video response http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWxV8jDyvYg
Peace
I think RIM needs to hire the marketing team for Apple though cuz damn they good
And props to Rob for STATING HIS OPINION that the 3G isn’t that big of a deal….
Maybe if the phone did my laundry….maybe I consider it
If I know Robb he gave this post the title that it has knowing that it would spark controversy and debate and controversy and debate has it sparked.
I agree with Robb. Apple fans always get so PISSED when a BB user goes onto an Apple fan site, yet it is ok for them to come here and piss all over Robb’s opinion. What a bunch of unmitigated aholes. That being said, Robb is 100% correct. The new iPhone software delivers just about everything you need (save video camera and not sure if 7.2 mbps is a chip issue or not). The new hardware is nice but is it absolutely a must have? I don’t think so.
That guy qquaglia is just a little troll along with his friend Marc. Both of these guys should go post on macdailynews, where the news is even more biased to apple than this iste is to BB. What’s more is a site like that that caters to smug Apple iPhanatics and is outright vitriolic to everything else makes reading it pointless. At least Robb poses a question and is willing to have a debate when people don’t get in the way. That’s you Marc and quaglia.

Article on how so many people are very angry at AT&T over the SUPER NEW IPHONE 3G S
Pretty interesting stuff if you ask me…
2pts for Rob
after all these are just mobile phones…
In defense of AT&T (and I think their service sucks and will never use them again until they get it up to par), what price did existing customers expect to get the new models at if they already got a 3G barely a year ago? We all know it’s two years before you’re good for the next one? And we all know that Apple’s track record is one per year. People need to deal with it and shell out the bucks if they want it. I just don’t get it. I don’t expect VZW to hand me a Storm 2 for $200 even though it’s not two years on my contract. I signed on the dotted line, understanding the terms of the deal. Plus, these companies need to make money…they’re not in business to hand out cool gadgets at discounted prices. Just my two cents… 🙂
Robb,
I dare you to post an article tomorrow on why you feel the iPhone is overrated when compared to the BB. 🙂
If you have an iPhone 3G then getting the new software v 3.0 will give you most of the upgrade.
Add to that the fact that if you upgrade early from the 3G to the 3GS you will have to pay a premium unsubsidized price…and I agree that it makes sense for most iPhone 3G owners to stand pat and wait for next year’s model to upgrade.
I also agree that I don’t blame ATT; they are following the same rules on price subsidies as with any other phone.
However, I wouldn’t be surprised if ATT doesn’t cave to the pressure and offer some sort of concession; right now they have a lot of angry customers.
As many of you know, I rarely edit or ban comments, but please try to keep the language PG. Additionally I welcome all opinions. If everyone agreed wholeheartedly with everything that I say, this would be an awfully boring place.
Who’s this Marc idiot? What a hypocritical fanboi.
As someone with no axe to grind, it is with objective intention that I agree with Rob. The WWDC was in its entirety underwhelming, including the iPhone 3S.
The Pre, in contrast, IS something truly new and fresh.
Now it’s RIM’s turn to innovate…
Please RIM, great devices, but its time to break the mold!
Actually, as a longtime BlackBerry devotee, the new iPhone isn’t so ho-hum for me.
The video (with on phone editing!) looks very cool. Also, although I’m starting to type less on my Curve as a general practice after buying a laptop, the copy and paste functions as well as the landscape keyboard mitigate one of the worst barriers for me as a Berry fan.
On the other hand, my religion with the Berry is auto-text entires — I have literally hundreds and am considered the fastest gun in the West by my friends for texting.
The iPhone still doesn’t have that — even for jail broken phones.
The Mac OS, on the other hand, will have system wide auto text entries Apple’s calling “Substitutions.” I bet they will be downscaled for the iPhone OS at some point.
Eric asked about multi-tasking — the iPhone has had it (see http://tr.im/o3yM ) and will expand upon it (see http://tr.im/o3zx ).
As for the need for multi-tasking? My Curve crashes a lot with the latest OS that T-Mobile put on a replacement unit. I don’t think the multi-tasking is all that hot even though I like having it.
Yippee! More prepubescent teens arguing over who will get their pubes first. Kids, go do some homework or play on your Nintendos or something. I am sick and tired of reading this shit about iPhone vs BlackBerry! They are two different things and let them be just that. Steve Jobs is dying and so is the company.. so help him (and you Mac fags) God.
Oh, the irony of “TQ” calling other people “kids”…
Anyway, to the post: another whinge about expecting more from a phone. Yawn.
