5 Reasons RIM Should Bring Amazon’s Ecosystem to the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry 10

February 7, 2012 by Robb Dunewood 13 Comments

At least a couple of times now I have mentioned on the SMRpodcast that Research in Motion should partner with Amazon to bring their ecosystem to the BlackBerry PlayBook and RIM’s next-generation BlackaBerry 10  operating system.

Amazon looked into buying RIM last summer, but, RIM wasn’t interested…

December 21, 2011 by Robb Dunewood Leave a Comment

Word on the street is that Amazon was interested in buying Research in Motion last summer and even hired an investment bank to review a potential merger, but, never got to the point of making a formal offer because RIM’s management did not want to sell or break up the company.

(Reuters) – Research In Motion Ltd has turned down takeover overtures from Amazon.com Inc and other potential buyers because the BlackBerry maker prefers to fix its problems on its own, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

SMRpodcast # 92: A Rick Perry Moment

November 16, 2011 by Robb Dunewood Leave a Comment

Episode #92 of the SMRpodcast, A Rick Perry Moment, is online and ready for download.  This week, after a brief hiatus, Brent Harmon returns to the show with, not one, but, two new Android devices, the Droid RAZR and the Droid Rezound.

We also talk a lot about the Kindle Fire, the BlackBerry London, and ponder if RIM should drop the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook to $99.

What ecosystem can the BlackBerry PlayBook play in?

October 5, 2011 by Robb Dunewood 3 Comments

Last week rumors that RIM was planning on getting out of the tablet game and discontinuing production of the BlackBerry PlayBook spread like wild fire, and, even though RIM put out a statement calling the rumors “pure fiction” and that the company “remains highly committed to the tablet market”, it’s not really all that difficult to understand why the rumors seemed so plausible…

Will Amazon’s Kindle Fire force RIM to discount the BlackBerry PlayBook even more?

September 29, 2011 by Robb Dunewood 10 Comments

Research in Motion’s first stab at a tablet device, the BlackBerry PlayBook, isn’t really doing all that well.  The hardware is pretty good, but, the software has been weighed, measured, and found wanting.  We’ve seen pricing on the PlayBook drop 40% to 50% and even more in some cases, and, although RIM is calling the decrease in price special discounting to improve sell through (it’s all semantics as far as consumers are concerned), the PlayBook today will cost you significantly less than it did a couple of weeks ago.
