Yesterday we came across a press release stating that Palm would launch a new mobile device today and we asked if you thought that their new device could turn things around for the company. Well, based on leaked information about the new Palm device named the Palm Foleo.
I only have one question to ask. What in the world is Palm thinking?
Palm inadvertently posted the press release for their new device their feeds introducing the Palm Foleo, a device they are calling “The First Mobile Companion”. Brighthand.com actually has a screen capture of the feed as Palm has since taken it down. We have the text here:
Palm, Inc. today announced the Palm Foleo, world’s first smartphone companion product.
Foleo has a large screen and full size keyboard to view and edit email and office documents. Edits made on Foleo automatically are reflected on its paired smartphone and vice versa.
Foleo and its paired smartphone stay synchronized throughout the day or at the touch of a button.
Foleo turns on and off instantly, features fast navigation, a compact and elegant design, and a battery that lasts up to five hours of use.
U.S. availability for Foleo begins this summer with pricing expected to be $499 after an introductory $100 rebate.“Foleo is the most exciting product I have ever worked on. Smartphones will be the most prevalent personal computers on the planet, ultimately able to do everything that desktop computers can do. However, there are times when people need a large screen and full-size keyboard. As smartphones get smaller, this need increases. The Foleo completes the picture creating a mobile-computing system that sets a new standard in simplicity.”
What??? Is Palm frigging kidding me? If I am reading this correctly Palm’s latest invention is a $500, Linux running, laptop sized but not a laptop device that synchs with a Treo. Why would anyone ever buy this instead of just buying a cheap laptop, which, last time I checked, synchs with a Treo.
I cannot wait until the official press release comes out. Maybe it will clear some of this nonsense up.
Man, I couldn’t agree more. WTF?! Why would I not just go to Costco or Wal-Mart and get their cheapest laptop THAT ALSO SYNCS WITH A TREO?? Palm…oh, Palm….deary me.
I can’t believe this is the big announcement? The Foleo? Palm has realy lost it. Board the place up, Palm IS dead. Nothinglike going out with a stupid looking mini laptop…..
Screw Palm!
The fact that it as after 4:00 p.m. in the East and there still has been no official announcement makes me wonder if the inadvertent posting of the the press release was really a mistake or if Palm was just putting some misinformation out there so that folks are really surprised when they truly announce something.
Zander,
Palm actually unveiled the Foleo about 90 minutes ago and recieved a rather lackluster reception for D: attendees…
The Palm “Fool-eo” is more like it.
Looking at the device just launched today there is no mystery why Palm has continued to slip. Nothing revolutionary, nothing new. And at the proposed price tag of $499, I suggest one greatly consider a cheap laptop alternative. It baffles me why one would carry a foleo and a smartphone rather than a laptop and smartphone. Consider just how thin most laptops have become. A foleo requires space as a does a laptop and is nothing more than a hyped up dumb terminal as those familiar with Unix or remote computing understand well. How this concept is unique other than providing remote access to a smartphone is beyond me. Someone help. I am still trying to understand why I would carry a foleo rather than a laptop at the same price with endless additional functionality when neither can be more easily stored over the other.
My thoughts exactly. Pretty dumb!
As much as I like my 750 Treo, this might be the straw that moves me back to BB.
Will probably give the 750 to the wife and get a curve for me. just wish the 9 series was out as UMTS/HSDPA is hard to give once you start using it…
This might the straw that moves me back to the BB. I was expecting something more or at least an update to the 750 allowing for HSDPA access.
They refuse to update POS and while my 750 has been rock steady, the inherent lack of updates and lack of innovation is somewhat troubling.
I am getting either the Cavalier or the Curve…as Palm has clearly lost it…now if Cingular would drop that BB data price by $10…
