Yesterday we heard through the wire that RIM was working on a new Picasa client for the BlackBerry and since the BlackBerry website has been updated to tell you the same.
Picasa Web Albums Uploader for BlackBerry, as the mobile BlackBerry client is being called should probably be out soon rather than later. RIM isn’t giving an official launch date, however, you can receive a notification of the debut of Picasa Web Albums Uploader for BlackBerry by signing up to the BlackBerry Owners Lounge.
I wonder how much this will affect the bottom line of companies that charge for these applications.
Robb,
I just installed Google Mobile Updater on my VZW Pearl and loaded all the applications. I’m happy to say that it was able to finally get Google Maps working. There is a way around the lockdown, and this is it. Working like a charm, and picked up my location.
I’m trying out the other applications now…which include Picasa, Docs, Reader, Search, News, Mail, Sync and Talk.
bluehorseshoe,
This “lockdown” you speak of on your vzw blackberry Pearl, surely vzw does this “lockdown” for the benefit of vzw customers aka “we are always working for you”. Getting “around” a feature vzw add’s to it’s blackberrys (and thankfully only it’s blackberrys) seems like a rather bad idea no? You’d think paying a service provider to “lockdown” a consumers wireless device, to limit, control, and/or nickle and dime would be a wake up call to move on to a service provider which gives consumers the freedom to use their wireless devices (including RIM Blackberry’s) as RIM designed them…..
Like your precious iPhone? The iPhone can’t do a damn thing without iTunes. Can’t even swap the battery! Talk about lock down. What are you going to do when you have to send it in for a battery replacement? But wait…that means you don’t even have your phone! Nice.
And if VZW is alone in the world about trying to make a dime…please. I’ll take a ‘lockdown’ for superior quality and service.
bluehorseshoe,
Strange when the poor sheep admit their service provider does a “lockdown” of their Blackberry and to make the device function the consumer must find “ways around” vzw’s “lockdown” Even more strange when the poor sheep lies, and FUD’s to protect their service provider. Whats the word for that mental illness? Stockholm syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome
Oh nice try but NO the iPhone is not at all like the “lockdown” you claim you have from your vzw RIM Blackberry, and that you must find “ways around the lockdown” just to get the vzw blackberry to function like RIM designed it. More excuses for the unexcusable greed, arrogance, device function removal and crippling done by vzw.
att is hands off the iPhone, att takes care of the great coast to coast coverage, and Apple takes care of the device. If you had a iPhone you be able to talk the TRUTH about it, instead of bluehorseshoe FUD. No function removal, or crippling done to the iPhones, they are as they are designed.
PS your response more than confirms the answers to the questions….. Keep on defending your downgrade…..
@ hellidiot
What is ‘poor sheep?’ Are you retarded? Do you know how to communicate? You really are one strange brew…
AT&T is hands off because Apple is hands on. No response to swapping out your battery? How do you open those word documents? Excel anyone? Try using it with TMO? Would suck to lose juice during your viewing of ‘Pinocchio’ or your podcast of ‘Hooked on Phonics’. The only thing AT&T ensures is dropped calls and overpriced data subscriptions and plans.
Robb,
Used Google Maps on the Pearl on the way home this evening and it works. A little off on the ‘My Location’ (a couple of miles let’s say), but certainly in the area. Been using Google Talk for the past couple of days and no hits on my account (same w/Yahoo Messenger if you download it directly from Yahoo). Liking it all so far…
Bluehorseshoe, where did you go to download the Google GPS function for your Pearl?
@ Mickey
Have the link sent to your phone via text and then click on the link. I couldn’t do it by typing it in the browser, but clicking the link works when sent to you. You need to download the Google Mobile Updater and select the Maps application. I guess it’s able to bypass the lockdown using this method.
http://www.google.com/mobile/stp-js.html
Couple months we’ll hear from Bluehorseshoe letting us know vzw is wise to his “bypass(ing) the lockdown” and putting the screws to him….
Poor sheep
…and the guards at Creedmore will get wise and put you in your proper lockdown with the nice white jacket and extra locks. Now that would be sweet!
Bluehorseshoe – thanks, downloaded it easily…and thanks for entertaining me with the comments towards hellno.
Hellno – thanks for bringing nothing to the table with your usual meaningless Iphone plug on a blackberry website.
Mickey,
Before you start making baseless claims… please re-read and see who introduces the iPhone into this thread.

Thats right…. A word of caution before you also start following bluehorseshoe down the ignorant path of “working around” locks vzw puts on their devices… vzw can detect by data use if your somehow defeating their device firmware locks, be prepared for a bill if your caught. They done it before and for sure will do it again.
Keeping being “entertaining” by bluehorseshoe’s ignorant “comments towards” others he’s such a shining example of a sad vealot sheep, who downgraded his standard, open, global GSM service for vzw crippleware, who uses FUD and lies to desperately try to justify his poor choice. Comments here at RIMarkable shouldn’t be “comments towards” others, but posts about technology and wireless devices.
Poor vealot sheep….
Hellno, the sheep comments are completely unnecessary, Verizon has the best coverage here in Philadelphia, especially compared to AT&T, which I’ve had. So I’d rather have them compared to anyone else for that reason alone.
Serious question though, why would I get charged by Verizon for using Google maps on my phones? The only thing I did was go to google.com on my phone and downloaded it. Can you tell me where in the Verizon contract I am breaking it that they would charge me?
Mickey,
First when it comes to wireless please learn there is no “Best” anything.
Second vzw is blocking/crippling/not allowing you to use functions of the BB as RIM designed it. Any time you have to “go around” a vzw block your opening yourself up for getting charged. Also your paying a service providing company that limits and cripples away functions and features on your hardware? If thats the “best” then another word for “best” must be anti-consumer, mixed in with greed and arrogance.
Verizon gets me again with a disabled feature

Verizon’s greed hurts its customers

I just heard that Robb has decided to have Verizon host the web site, with the hope to lock it down and keep hellno off the site.
I’m liking Verizon more and more every day. See…lockdown can be a good thing!
@ Mickey – VZW won’t charge you. What they do is try to prevent any map like programs on their phones so users have to use VZW Navigator for GPS tracking and directions. Google Maps is a free product, and thus would remove $10-15 per month per user if everyone had a need for a map-like program. What you ‘may’ be charged for though is data if your using Google Maps ‘Search’ feature. If you did a search for local businesses, etc. from where you are or what you enter, that would be pulled off the net, thus the data feed. If you have a data plan, then you’re good. But that applies no matter what service you use or are on. I believe Google Maps is utilizing the GPS feature that came with the device if you have the 88XX or Pearl, so it’s not ‘disabled’ (funny how that word also describes hellno) as some would ‘like’ to think.
I’ve been using it the past couple of days and noticed that Google Maps works, however it’s off by a few miles. Directions work, but it could offer better, alternative routes.
Google maps uses tower location not GPS, that’s why it is off by a couple of blocks to a couple miles. Also, be aware that every time a map is loaded to your phone, it uses data. It uses a fair amount of data, so if you’re not an an “unlimited” plan, I would consider not using it.
Hellno, maybe you didn’t understand when I said Verizon has the best COVERAGE. I don’t really care about locked/crippled features. I have a blackberry for 2 reasons, e-mail and most importantly, phone calls, which Verizon has the BEST reception.
Mickey,
That dream/brainwashing will end as quickly as others call BS on bluehorseshoe’s FUD.
Bet all providers do a pretty good job in the Philadelphia metro area as most do very well in high population metro areas.
Maybe you “didn’t understand when I said “there is no “best” in wireless service providers, which is most likey the case since you chose to pay vzw to cripple and limit your wireless service and device. Caught in vealot dream.
Thanks pd!
Yet more bluehorseshoe FUD / DEBUNKED.
@ hellidiot
I think you really are Elmer ‘FUD’! ‘Caught in a vealot dream?’ Are you kidding? Put down the crack pipe and get a grip on reality. Dungeons and Dragons was in the past, unless you still believe in fire breathing dragons.
Hey…did Santa come by your house this year? …I bet not.
Hellno,
Again, maybe this time I’ll put it in bullet format for you for the things I need from a wireless provider:
1. E-mail – Verizon provides this for me
2. Reception – Verizon is the BEST in the area
-that means better than a pretty good job than other providers (including T-Mobile and AT&T)
Hopefully that worked for you.
@pd
I stand corrected if true. I thought they pulled it off the GPS, but my bad. The tower pull actually makes sense considering the miles it’s off. However, I knew they pulled off the data feed when it came to local searches, etc. It’s best to have a plan for that if using frequently on phones other than a BB (free with the BB’s on VZW since the package comes with unlimited access for $29.99).
Thanks for the clarification.
So admit it bluehorseshoe, vzw DID disable the autonomous gps which RIM built into your vzw Pearl. All other 8120’s, 8130’s, heck all other RIM BB’s (not branded with vzw) with GPS work without paying the provider extra money except for vzw. Your “stand(ing) corrected” on A LOT of stuff these days, yet for some reason learning before grandstanding false information is still very tough for you. Better to learn from those in the know, instead removing all doubt about yourself each day with not so true comments.
Also remember everyone not just bluehorseshoe, when vzw says “unlimited” they don’t mean “unlimited”.
Verizon unlimited EV-DO not so unlimited: can you even use RSS?
http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkontherun/2006/07/verizon_unlimit.html
Verizon to pay $1 million over deceptive “unlimited” EVDO plans
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071023-verizon-to-pay-1-million-over-deceptive-unlimited-evdo-plans.html
It’s not wise to try and get around the vzw fat cat crippling without expecting to PAY for it. vzw is always watching it’s flock, and will take action with those like bluehorseshoe who think they can “work around” a blocked function.
@ hellidiot
The only thing that is ‘limited’ is your mental capacity, and the only thing that is ‘restricted’ is your mental bandwidth. No, VZW did not diable the GPS. Yes, they do charge for ‘threir’ software program. Who the hell doesn’t try to make a dime in this world? If you don’t like it, then don’t use them.
Most people use VZW for their superior coverage and service. First and foremost, it’s a phone. The email, GPS, web browsing, etc. come in at a close second. If people don’t like the fact that VZW locks down certain features, then they shouldn’t be using VZW. But those of us that prefer the solid network and can live without (or with by paying) the extra features, such as GPS, then so be it.
You provide all this anti-VZW crap every single post. I’d really like to know why you’re so hell bent (…maybe that should be your handle?) against them. Did they fire you? Beat you in a law suit? Did the VZW guy come to your house and bitch slap you? I’m not sure what your issue is, but you’ve certainly proved your lack of ability to effectively communicate with the rest of the world.
Can you hear me now?
bluehorseshoe,
you are incorrect (AGAIN) the autonomous GPS is disabled on vzw Blackberrys, and only vzw blackberrys. You should really search to learn the truth before making such poor choices and grandstands.
“In 1983, President Ronald Reagan issued a directive making the system available for free for civilian use as a common good.”
RIM makes BB’s for just about every service provider. More and more BB’s have
autonomous GPS capabilities but only those branded with vzw are crippled from using autonomous GPS, thats ok? Your tax dollar is paying for the GPS system, you pay RIM for BB devices, you might make the wrong choice and find vzw as your wireless service provider and be paying them for the BB service. While the autonomous GPS functions are available on others devices (not branded with vzw) Customers of other service providers (not verizon) are able to use autonomous GPS without paying for it a second or third time. RIM made the BB’s so you don’t need a thing (software) from the service provider when it comes to autonomous GPS. vzw has done the same thing with other technologies in the past (like bluetooth)
Those of you who excuse vzw’s anti-consumer game of lies, greed, arrogance, and FUD just don’t get it. Yet to try to make yourself feel better you then add in the BS about the mythical “superior coverage and service”. The truth is clear to the rest of us bluehorseshoe that you downgraded from T-Mo to vzw. Your finding the vzw crippling is limiting. Your trying to “get around” the crippling and slowly learning your vzw dream is like your thoughts, full of BS.
bluehorseshoe FUD / DEBUNKED.
@ hellidiot…
WOW! You really are retarded. FUD/DEBUNKED…and Ronald Reagan 25 years ago.
If you had a tail, you’d chase it all day long. LOL…dude, you make me piss my pants. Classic.
