If anyone one knows of a way to view unread mail easily on a BlackBerry, please let me know. It seems to me like a simple Unread Mail folder would do the trick. I know that there are third party applications out there that have this feature, however, you would think that this is something that RIM could easily ad add.

Perform a search, and change the Show field to “Unopened only”. Voila, you see only unopened items.
Yes, Terry answered first and is correct. You can also SAVE this search and assign it a specific Alt+ shortcut. Done.
Hit the U key in messages – it will skip to the oldest unread, and hit it again to skip to the next oldest unread.
Terry and Dave,
I never thought of saving a custom search. That is a heck of a tip.
Terry & Dave,
You two saved my life :), thanks a lot for the custom search
solution for filtering to only unread messages,
I have been looking for it for a while, I even planned to find another mail-sms application which has this functionality.

In response to “heck of a tip”… Do I see a new blog post coming to explain that? Check out these tips too…

To expand on the saved search, assign Alt+Z, then its a 1 finger push to bring up unread messages.
Or you can just use the built in saved search, Alt+U, which filters to only unread messages.
wu-wei, Alt+U toggles a read message to unread or a unread message to read. Does not filter unread messages.
Unfortunately there are many things that RIM could “easily ad” (and add) into the BlackBerry, however that would take away the little quarks that give it its charm. Why would you want a device that works all the time -AND- has customizable features?
You’re asking for too much.
Ok, props to Dave on that custom search trick. I completely forgot about that option, makes it even easier.
As noted above, on most newer devices, when viewing a Messages list, the [Alt]U key combination will display only unread email, although it’s from ALL message services.
For those that don’t have [Alt]U available yet, instructions on setting it up can be found here:
