Google announced this morning that it is ending support for the Gmail App for BlackBerry on November 22nd and will continue to focus their efforts on the mobile browser based version of Gmail.
Although I am sure that some BlackBerry user somewhere will be miffed about this, I really don’t see this as being all that big of a deal. It’s been over three years since we’ve last mentioned Gmail App for BlackBerry here on RIMarkable and can’t think of any BlackBerry users that still use it.
BlackBerry users have been able to to get full access to their Gmail accounts using BIS, which includes support for Stars, Labels, Archiving, and more for years. Furthermore, the mobile Gmail website is actually better than Gmail App for BlackBerry.
The Gmail App for BlackBerry will probably be missed by someone. I am just not sure who…
I prefer just having my gmail forwarded to my blackberry anyway – haven’t bothered with their gmail app for a long time now.
How does this effect if you use gmail as your client server? (Is that correct termanology?)
It doesn’t affect you at all unless you use app, which, most people don’t. BlackBerry devices have full access to Gmail via BIS as well as just visiting http://m.gmail.com which is more capable than Gmail App for BlackBerry.
I’ve been happy with the Gmail App for BB and will continue to use it. I just wish it would work over WiFi.
