I was just having a conversation with a friend who just changed jobs and no longer needs his BlackBerry for corporate use. He just got a BlackBerry 8703e on Verizon but is going to return it so he can get a Motorola Q. He admitted that there is no way that they would use the Q for business, yet, he is going to buy that new black Motorola Q for personal use.
My friend was a long time BlackBerry user so when he told me this I didn’t believe him, especially when he just upgraded to the 8703 not 2 weeks ago when he changed jobs. He told me that it just wasn’t worth it becasue he really doesn’t use the BlackBerry for anything. I said that he couldn’t be serious, the he asked me this question.
Besides email and making calls, what do you really use your BlackBerry for?
I heard the question or some variant of it many times before, but, for some reason it really stuck with me with me.
Besides email and making calls, what do you really use your BlackBerry for?
This question really got me to thinking about how I actually use my BlackBerry. I have been a BlackBerry user for years and have written about the device almost every day for over the passed two. If I am honest, however, I really don’t use my BlackBerry for anything besides email and making calls. Sure, I have a ton of games and I constantly am IMing people via BlackBerry Messenger, but, when I really think about it, there is no killer app outside of email that draws me to the BlackBerry so that I cannot live without it.
I bet I am missing out on some really cool stuff so I am going to ask the question to you.

I use my BB to keep my calendar up to date with reminders of upcoming apt such as a doctor apt or dentist. I use it to keep all my passwords in one locked place, well as all my contacts, not to mention notes, I must have at least 30 notes that I keep current for use when I am out and about. So even outside of work or email usage I use my BB all the time. I have found it to be an invaluable tool.
I use my blackberry to read my blogs via bloglines mobile more than anything else.
The things I use on my BlackBerry besides phone/e-mail:
1. Berry Bloglines when I have a few minutes to kill somewhere.
2. Checking scores of games.
3. I probably use my Berry411 once every couple of weeks when I’m out of town.
With Blackberry Maps and a Bluetooth GPS, my BB has become my personal “OnStar” 🙂
oh, one more thing:
BrickBreaker
– Alarm (daily)
– Calendar + appointment scheduling
– Personal Address Book + wireless access to enterprise address book
– Memos
– Google maps to check traffic and as yellow pages
– Web browse on the go (Opera 3.0)
– IM with google talk
– Check gmail with gmail app
– Play Sudoku
– Play Texas Holdem
– Flashlight
I use my bb non-stop, and not for work use. Obviously email is the most important, but I use berry411 and google maps to find information and directions on a daily basis. In the morning, it’s the BlackBerry that wakes me up. During my lunch break I use browser’s built in RSS reader to follow the job listings on craigslist. If I see something I like, I forward the resume and reference pdf’s that I have stored on my micros sd card in an email. I also use the browser to follow several blogs and news sites as well as the for sale section of craigslist. Again if I see something I like I send an email to the seller. I usually take a few photos during the day and upload them to flickr. After work (when I don’t make an excuse) I plug in my earphones, put on my workout mix, and head to the gym. When I’m not at work, my bb has all of my appointments and tasks ready to go. If I have to wait an extra half hour at the doctor’s office, I’ll watch an episode of 30 Rock that I’ve saved. My bb is with me all day, from beginning to end.
1) Calendar
2) quick memos when I don’t have a pen
3) camera when i need a quick shot
4) browsing on the go
5) checking my train schedule
6) Google Maps
7) AOL IM on the go
8) GAMES GAMES GAMES
9) Oh and to show people I have the coolest smartphone out there
I use my BB for calendar entries, text messages, Email, phone, and for Internet access when I am not in the office. I know for a fact that these options help me budget my time and make me far more efficient than I had been before purchasing a BB.
Phone
Email
SMS
Calendar / with reminder – for wifes BD and wedding anniversary
Internet (to settle disputes – generally in a bar)
Critical lists – books / DVD’s I’m looking for (pants size and length, so I don’t have to try on)
Passwords
That’s about it; pretty good, if I do say so myself. I’d use it for RSS feeds, but I can’t get that part to work.
I use my blackberry as my main communications device with AIM, yahoo, gmail and MSN apps to stay connected to all my people. I also use it to view websites and graphics I develop on the small screen to check for compatibility. Also all of my class schedules, assignments, exams and notes are in it. I also use it as my primary internet browser while at a cafe or on a bus/ in a cab. Plus the form factor is perfect because I have big hands. I use blackbery to replace my piece of crap iPaq.
Blackberry saved my life!
Oh yeah, and it gives me something to do while my girlfriend is trying on clothes or looking at pocket books….and blackberry browser is the best pocker internet browser there is (miniopera is good, dont get me wrong, but bbbrowser is the easiest to use)
All of the above (well, except the chat stuff) plus as an ebook reader. I currently have four books in my BlackBerry – those are books I never have to carry around, and I always have access to. Admittedly, the list of available books on mobipocket.com is rather small, but I can still find something to read. And the BB is better than an itty bitty book light when I am sitting in my son’s room in the dark waiting for him to finally fall asleep.
Also, I love shopmagic (no more scraps of paper in my bag) and use pocketexpress for the easy access to a dictionary and movie listings. And pocketday is my home screen (since I primarily use the BB for email, phone and calendar), and splashphoto for photos of the family. A lot of the great software I’ve read about here.
Clearly, I am self-employed and can put whatever I want on my BlackBerry. I love it.
With my Blackberry in hand, I only go indoors to charge it. The other benefits i take regular advantage of are Telenav navigation, faxing and IM.
Honestly I use my blackberry for a number of reasons. Just to list a few,
look up directions on the fly using google maps
use berry411 to look up business phone numbers ie. traget( on the fly of course)
memo pad for wirting down new ideas
modem for my laptop(very slow)
alarm clock when at a friends house.
flash light in the morning when I dont want to turn on the lights and anger my girlfriend
The list goes on and on. It comes down to how techy you are and also how much you are away from a PC
oh yeah and to log onto Myspace(shhh dont tell!)
My Pearl is my bestfriend. It holds all my secrets(and some of my friend’s as well). It’s my handheld knitting library, thanks to the copy and paste function and the memopad. Thanks to the Mobireader, it’s also my ebook library. It’s my window to the world when I’m stuck at home alone. It’s made me some very good friends who I chat with everyday. Most importantly, it keeps me in instant touch with my daughter Megan, who is an Army combat medic posted in Iraq. I could not live without it. The biggest benefit is the irritation factor. My husband hates my blackberry. Lol! So of course it has pride of place on my nightstand.
calendar and contact list are the 2 other major features i use in addition to phone and email.
Besides phone & email, I use my bb pearl for taking pictures, text messaging, notes, reminders. I also use the web browser every single day. I wish I could figure out how to put my music on it, how to put ebooks on it.
I use to be a Treo fan, but now I swear by my blackberry, I will never use any other device!
I work as an investigator for a law enforcement agency.
We use the Blackberry for the standard email and PIM functions.
We also use the Blackberry to access our local databases. We can access the Jail imaging (photos) system, to pull a mugshot on a person that had been arrested directly to our Blackberry.
We also can run wanted queries, check the status of a drivers license, and run property for stolen.
The Blackberry adds tools to the Investigator at the scene the he/she would have had to go to the office to do before.
Just took a new job. Previously had a treo 700w. Just got a 8703.
Gotta tell you, there’s no comparison in funtionality… Treo is far superior. Touch screen on the treo is very practicle. SD expansion slot provides flexibility. It’sa easy to use as an MP3 player. – cannot think of anything that the 8703 does better than the 700w.

Barb, I found my ebook reader at http://www.mobipocket.com. Free software; works great, although not a huge selection of books. You can change the font, size and background color to make it easier to read. Interesting how the women commenting are the ones reading ebooks on their blackberries.
Pam (a different Pam than above)
