Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook inadvertently leaked by RIM

July 21, 2011 by Robb Dunewood 4 Comments

Via a change log found in BlackBerry Desktop Software, a link to a beta build the Android App Player for BlackBerry PlayBook was found, and for several hours today, downloadable from the BlackBerry.com website.  Research in Motion has since pulled the pre-release version of  the Android App Player and has released this official statement.

“An older version of the Android App Player beta software for the BlackBerry PlayBook was inadvertently posted and has since been removed. We recommend that users refrain from downloading and installing this software since it is outdated and non-functional in many respects. The official beta release of the Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook is on track for release later this summer.”

We didn’t get a chance to download the Android App Player before RIM pulled it off of their website.  We heard, however, that it was a very early build and quite buggy.  If you still want to give it a go, head over to N4BB and you may be able to find a download link…

‘inadvertently’ eh?  Sounds to me a lot more like a nice deniable way for RIM to show all the people screaming for Android capability that, yes they’re working on it, and no, it won’t be ready for a while.

The silence and secrecy about progress on Playbook projects is even more annoying than the nonappearance of apps and capabilities whose ‘right around the corner’ status were used to sell consumers on the Playbook.
