U.S. wireless carrier Alltel Corp has urged Research in Motion to settle a legal dispute involving its popular BlackBerry device, the Wall Street Journal reported. RIM is in an ongoing legal dispute with patent holding company NTP Inc. Alltel told RIM it is concerned about the impact of a possible BlackBerry-service shutdown on its roughly 100,000 e-mail customers, the Journal reported in its weekend edition. In addition to Alltel, several other large U.S. operators have contacted RIM over the matter, the Journal reported, sourcing people familiar with the situation. Analysts say the United States is RIM’s largest single market, the Journal reported.
