The Perfect BlackBerry

February 12, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 12 Comments

I’ve been thinking lately about, for me, what the perfect BlackBerry would be and I figured that I would see what you guys think.  Please let me know what I am forgetting anything.

Here is what I want…

A touch screen BlackBerry device no bigger than the the BlackBerry Curve 8900 with a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard that runs on Verizon.  GPS should not be locked down at all.  (Personally I could care less about GPS but I know that a lot BlackBerry users love it.)

This BlackBerry should have Wi-Fi, which, up until now, has been a no-no for Verizon BlackBerry devices.  Not only should this device have Wi-Fi, but, it should be able to be used as hotspot for at least two Wi-Fi enabled devices so long as you have an unlimited Broadband Connect plan.

I want at least 8 gigs of internal memory and it would also be nice if RIM could figure out a way for this perfect BlackBerry to run applications securely from removable memory.  Give me a media player that actualy looks and functions like someone put some thought to it and last, but not least,  stick at a 5 megapixel digital camera in there.

What do you guys think?  Is this all doable with the current technology available?  What I am leaving off?

    That’s good idea.
On top of that, it should support SIM card, unlike those damn Verizon devices. The reboot should be faster. I waited forever to start up especially after you replace the battery. It is ridiculously slow.

(About the removable memory, I think RIM should encrypt it partially or entirely. So, if we decided to remove it for other uses, the data will be unusable and memory card need to be formatted. Secure and problem free. Also the memory card should be easier to remove than taking out the battery everytime.)

to answer your question, heck yes it is/would be possible… the bigger question is, “At what cost?” and “How much are you willing to pay for such a device?”

Time, and imagination led you to this point. R&D can take care of the rest. But in today’s world $$ talks.

I would like to see a INTEL Atom processor (or similar 1.6Ghz processor) with a little bit of power behind it. Something zippy, but didn’t require a lot of power to operate.

If you have a slide-out keyboard…then abandon the click-thru for more “traditional touch” and just do it like other do…with multitouch.

“a media player that actually looks and functions like someone put some thought to it” – right on! I got my Bold because first, it was a good deal ($100), and second because I thought it was true that it plays xVid…. what a hoax! I have an old iPaq w/ WM5 that has a free player which will play anything… really, anything! The Bold has a much powerful hardware but can’t handle the file s my ancient iPaq easily plays… shame on RIM!

I’d be happy with the Storm and an updated version that cures all the issues. That alone would be close to perfect for me.

But yes, what you have listed above is possible, provided the user doesn’t mind a very large battery and getting lit by all the frequency…IMHO.

    “Runs on Verizon”?
How about a Blackberry that will work on any network worldwide? I know that’s more than improbable, but hey, we can dream, right?

Being able to use your phone as a hotspot for other wi-fi devices is a great idea. It would probably kill your batter ythough.

Definitely would kill your battery but the fantastic thing about BlackBerries is that they have fantastic battery life in my point of view. It would be a nice touch for the on the go professional as a back up source. I also like the idea of having it be a world phone like the storm and 8800.

I would also like to add: COMPLETE MS OFFICE SUITE COMPATIBLE!!! Needing to check excels and pp’s and word docs and others essential to me and I need to get em, edit em, and send em with no issues whatsoever! I see that MS is liking BB more and more though since they have a windows live partnership now but I still want complete ms office suite issue free!

I also like the touch screen with pull out keyboard but i don’t want it to have the buttons like the 8800 hundred.

Also, make sure it’s not dumbed down by vzw themes and software. I love you verizon but your crap is really just crap. Let a BB be a BB in its own way and you provide the “network” so we always have the best service and have the best phone xD!! but i would like the rhapsody application available though as that would make work time more fun, thus destroying the need for me to have an mp3 and a bb in my jacket, just more stuff to carry!
