The WebKit BlackBerry Browser is coming. It will support HTML5, CSS3, and DOM L3. Personally I cannot wait until this thing comes out.
Here is a pretty good leaked video of the WebKit BlackBerry Browser in action…

Update: WebKit BlackBerry Browser demonstrated at MWC 2010. It looks pretty slick…
You may have heard that Research in Motion has been working on a new Webkit based BlackBerry Browser that they say will be on par with that found on the iPhone by the summer of this year. To let the world know that they were serious, RIM purchased Torch Mobile, makers of the Webkit IRIS browser back in August of last year. Just the other day RIM filed a patent application describing a proxy based web browsing scheme similar to that found in Opera Mini, and recenytly, analysts over at Canaccord Adams have gone on the record stating they believe the new BlackBerry Browser will be out before May and that the experience will be a “game changer“.

I believe that many BlackBerry users are eagerly anticipating the new WebKit based BlackBerry browser to that is supposed to be on par with, if not better than, mobile browsers currently found on devices like those running Android, Web OS, and even the iPhone OS. The BlackBerry Browser, however, isn’t the only thing RIM is looking at to improve your web browsing experience on the BlackBerry.
A new patent application recently filed by Research in Motion aims to speed up communication between the web and your web browser by installing a proxy server of sorts directly on your device.

It was a pretty good indication that Research in Motion has big plans for it’s BlackBerry Browser when it acquired Torch Mobile, makers of the WebKit based IRIS browser. It looks like the company is chugging away on their promise to have a BlackBerry Browser “on par with the iPhone“, by next summer and they are looking for a little help.
If you take a look over at LinkedIn, you can find a job posting for a WebKit Developer at Research in Motion.
We are currently looking for a talented and passionate individual to join a growing team within the BlackBerry Platform organization. Utilizing their expert knowledge in C++ programming, the successful candidate will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic development environment to develop a WebKit-based browser for the BlackBerry Platform.
You can check the full job posting out here.

Udate: Actually added the 10 reasons RIM needs to update the BlackBerry Browser immediately
<rant>
When I first started writing this post, I actually intended to list out 10 reasons why the web broswer on the BlackBerry needs to be updated. The truth of the matter, however, is that only one reason is really necessary…
The web browser on the BlackBerry sucks!
I am sitting here playing with a Palm Pre, a T-Mobile G1, and an iPod Touch. All three of these devices use a web browser based on the WebKit open source browser engine. It’s debatable which of the three offer the best browser experience, but, at the end of the day, all three are really good.
I am not saying that RIM needs to make a web browser based on WebKit, but, with most carriers offering pretty good 3G speeds and 4G being right in addition to the days of BlackBerry devices without Wi-Fi looking like they are numbered, RIM needs to come out something that can at least legitimately get in the game.
The mobile web has arrived, but, not so much for BlackBerry users…
