BlackBerry Media Sync with Windows Media Player Support

We just heard that an updated version of BlackBery Media Sync came out today and has support for Windows Media Player.  If you already have BlackBerry Media Sync installed you should be prompted to download the update next time you start it up.  You can also download it to your desktop here, for those of you that don’t.

BlackBerry Media Sync For Mac (Preview)

by Robb Dunewood on December 21, 2008 · 7 comments

Believe it or not, RIM has released BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac (Preview).  You can now sync your non-DRM protected iTunes media directly to your BlackBerry from your Mac.

As great as this is and all, I am sure Mac users would have much rather have had RIM release a BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac (Preview).

You can download BlackBerry Media Sync (Preview) here

If you haven’t heard yet, BlackBerry Media Sync was released yesterday so now BlackBerry users are able to transfer their non DRM protected iTunes Media over to their BlackBerry. I downloaded BlackBerry Media Sync when it was leaked a month or so ago, and I downloaded it yesterday to make sure that I have the latest version.

Know that I am fully able to transfer music and podcasts from iTunes to my BlackBerry I fully admit that I probably never will. I guess just knowing that I could if I wanted to is enough for me.

Sometimes when you need to drive a nail, the best thing to do is hit the damn thing with a hammer.

I am not trying to tell you the the iPod is the best MP3 player out there, however, when you combine it with iTunes and the iTunes store, I believe there is no better option for listening to watching content while on the go. Hell, I’ve got an iPhone and barely listen to music with it just because my library is too big and it is a hassle choosing which movies I want to watch before I go on a trip when I can just take them all with me on my iPod Video.

I am not going to jog while listening to my BlackBerry. I am not going to hook my BlackBerry up to the DVD player in my car. My BlackBerry doesn’t fit any of the various speaker systems or alarm clocks around my house or office. Convergence is fine concept, but, sometimes, it is just not necessary.

Maybe a better question to ask over do you really listen to music on your BlackBerry is do you really need to?

Word on the street is that BlackBerry Media Sync, the free utility from RIM that allows you to sync non-DRM protected media from iTunes to your BlackBerry, will be officially released today.

You may remember about a month ago BlackBerry Media Sync kind of slipped out online and you were able to download it for a couple of days from Akamai’s Edgesuite servers. I downloaded it and used it a few times and it seemed to do exactly what it said it did.

It is believed that BlackBerry Media Sync will be found on www.blackberry.com/mediasync when it does become available. If you really want to sync your iTunes to your BlackBerry you may want to check that link later today.

I would venture to bet that Research in Motion will be launching BlackBerry Media Sync, the free utility that will allow you to sync your non-DRM protected iTunes media to your BlackBerry, very soon, seeing how it is available for download online.

I am not sure how official this is, however, you can download BlackBerry Media Sync from http://download-mustang.rim.edgesuite.net/autoupdates/MediaSync/108_120608/BlackBerryMediaSyncDM.exe. RIM is hosting BlackBerry Media Sync on Akamai’s Edgesuite servers for rapid deployment.

UPDATE:  Download BlackBerry Media Sync

Remember BlackBerry Media Sync, the new feature coming in BlackBerry OS 4.6 that will makes its debut on the BlackBerry Bold? The big to do was that BlackBerry Media Sync will have iTunes support.

Well, so long as you don’t plan on viewing or listening to anything that you download from iTunes with Digital Rights Management (DRM), you will be good to go. As I suspected, BlackBerry Media Sync can’t get around DRM.

I started to name this post BlackBerry Media Sync: iTunes Support All But Useless, however, after thinking about it, felt that this would be kind of harsh. I guess that there is a lot of stuff that I have in iTunes that is not DRM protected and if BlackBerry Media Sync makes it easy to get some of this content onto my BlackBerry, there is a chance that I would actually listen to a podcast here or there.

What would really be nice is if you could create a Macro in BlackBerry Media Sync that would allow you to take DRM protected files, burn them to a CD (data file) then rip the CD file back to MP3 and transfer to your BlackBerry. This process needs to be automatic. If you have to do it manually it really is less of a chore to just carry your iPod with you.

If you own a BlackBerry Pearl or newer BlackBerry device listening to music is absolutely something that you can do. The reality, however, is that BlackBerry users simply don’t use their BlackBerry as an MP3 player even though they can.

To put it bluntly, the Roxio Media Manager sucks, plus, you already have a few hundred bucks tied up into your iPod and all of your music is already in iTunes. The convenience of not having to carry around your iPod because you can now put MP3s on your BlackBerry really isn’t all the convenient when you get right down to it because you have to convert everything from iTunes.

This is all going to change with BlackBerry Media Sync.

To make a long story short BlackBerry Media Sync will allow you to transfer music that you have in iTunes directly to your BlackBerry. There aren’t a lot of details yet, however, being able to sync iTunes to your BlackBerry will actually make listening to music on your BlackBerry less of a chore.

For me, my BlackBerry will probably never replace my iPod, however, I can see where I would sync some of my iTunes content to my BlackBerry for those rare times when I don’t have my iPod but still want to listen to or watch something.

BlackBerry Media Sync is not yet available however you can find out more about it here.
