RIM To Announce BlackBerry 9000 May 12th At WES

May 9, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 16 Comments

According to BGR, which is usually right about this kind of stuff, the BlackBerry 9000 will be officially announced by Research in Motion May 12th, the first day of WES down in Orlando Florida.

To be clear, the BlackBerry 9000 is being announced… Not released. If RIM follows suite, this thing will probably come out first on AT&T anywhere from a few weeks to a few months later.

Maybe we should go ahead and start the “How long with it take the BlackBerry 9000 to come out on Verizon?” thread now so we can get a jump start on what most probably will be a very popular post if past history is a good indication of things.

That BlackBerry 9000 eBay Auction Was Real

May 6, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 7 Comments

Remember that mysterious BlackBerry 9000 eBay auction that we talked about about a week ago? Well, not only did it turn out to be legitimate, our colleague Kevin Michaluk over at CrackBerry.com is the proud new owner.

We don’t want to steal any of Kevin’s thunder so head over to CrackBerry.com where they have a boat load of unboxing pictures.

BlackBerry Device Software v4.6 Gets A Broswer Overhaul

April 29, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 7 Comments

The Boy Genius has gotten his hands on the Incremental Features Document for BlackBerry Device Software Version 4.6 expected to debut with the BlackBerry 9000. A bunch of things like themes, language support, media applications, and streaming media, etc., have been redone. We however want to talk about just one update which arguably might be the coolest of them all.

From the looks of it, the BlackBerry Browser has been updated significantly from the bag of arse that it was before to a mobile browser acceptable by todays standards. It’s not Safari on the iPhone, but, quite frankly, it doesn’t have to be.

The web rendering has been improved dramatically and now supports the following AJAX capabilities…

  • JavaScript 1.5
  • CSS 2.1 (including Lists, Box Model, Positioning, Floats, Visual Effects, Tables, Colors, Backgrounds & Text Properties; NOT including system fonts and generated content)
  • DOM L2 (including Core, HTML, Style, Events)
  • HTML 4.01 (including Forms, Maps, Tables, Frames, Objects)
  • XMLHttpRequest

Unlocked BlackBerry 9000 Pulled From eBay

April 28, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 8 Comments

We don’t know how legitimate this auction actually was, however, an unlocked BlackBerry 9000 was listed on eBay earlier today and they had some pretty good close up pictures of the device as well.

The seller listed 2 BlackBerry 9000 devices for sale at a starting price of $399.99. It isn’t clear why the auction was canceled, however, the seller said that they did have the devices in stock even though they wouldn’t ship them until August.

The BlackBerry 9000 Just Got A Whole Lot Cooler

April 15, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 12 Comments

We haven’t done an awful lot of talking about the BlackBerry 9000 primarily because nothing really stood out as significantly superior to the BlackBerry Curve. Granted, the BlackBerry 9000 has a lot of memory and really clear display, but the BlackBerry 8800 style keyboard is con that outweighed the pros in my opinion.

That is until today, however, when he heard rumors that the BlackBerry 9000 sports a front facing video camera. The first thing that comes to mind when I see a mobile device with a video camera on the front and 3G speed is video conferencing.

I don’t know that the potential for video conferencing on a BlackBerry alone is enough to get me excited about the BlackBerry 9000, however, it is enough to get me to at least raise an eyebrow. I just may have to start paying a bit more attention to the BlackBerry 9000… Bad keyboard and all…

CNBC Is Calling The BlackBerry 9000 An iPhone Killer… I Think Not

April 1, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 17 Comments

I was just listening to Squawk Box on CNBC and one of their analysts attributed RIM’s upward moving stock price to good feelings about the BlackBerry 9000. They mentioned BGR’s First Impressions of the BlackBerry 9000 then called the device an iPhone Killer.

I know that it is just about 8:00 in the morning, however, I think that this is probably the most ridiculous thing that I will here all day.

Calling the BlackBerry 9000 an iPhone killer is just as bad as calling the iPhone a BlackBerry killer.

Even though RIM decided to put the suckiest keyboard that they’ve ever come up with on the BlackBerry 9000, a faster processor, 3G, and a new OS sporting a web browser they actually put some thought into will probably make the BlackBerry 9000 a hit. An iPhone Killer though? I think not.

Oh No! This Is The BlackBerry 9000 Again

January 21, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 26 Comments

Remember when we first saw pictures of what we presumed was the BlackBerry 9000 and thought, “Oh crap, this thing doesn’t have a touch-screen.”, only to be followed up with a post of how this might not actually be the BlackBerry 9000, but a new BlackBerry 8000 model?

Well, according to BGR, you can go back to the way you felt when you thought it wouldn’t have a touch-screen. It looks like this here device is the BlackBerry 9000 and is set to make it’s debut at WES 2008.

Is This The BlackBerry 9000?

January 2, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 82 Comments

There are leaked shots floating all around the interwebs supposedly of the BlackBerry 9000 The big news is that there is no touch screen. If these truly are pictures of the BlackBerry 9000 I have to say that I am a bit disappointed. Not so much because of the lack of a touch screen, but, because it would appear that RIM has gone back to that BlackBerry 8800 keyboard configuration where the keys are just too dag on close to each other.

I think that RIM hit the nail squarely on the head with the BlackBerry Curve, it’s fully QWERTY keyboard with good spacing between the keys, and the size of the device, just being a bit wider than the SureType BlackBerry Pearl devices.

If these are pictures of the BlackBerry 9000 lets hope that the keyboard feels a lot better than it looks.

There are pictures of the back and the inside of the BlackBerry 9000 after the jump…

A Touch Screen BlackBerry Won’t Be As Big As You Think

December 5, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 15 Comments

It seems like lately everyone is talking about the touch-screen bearing BlackBerry 9000 series devices that are supposed to be coming out in the first half of next year. Don’t get me wrong, the BlackBerry 9000 will undoubtedly be a popular device, however, an iPhone killer it won’t be. (It doesn’t really need to be, however that is for another post…)

Touch screens aren’t anything new. Granted the iPhone’s interface is revolutionary and is actually pretty usable, however, the tactile feel of buttons when pounding out emails is far superior. Simply ignore anyone who tries to convince you otherwise.

RIM is absolutely pushing into the consumer market and success here is critical to the long term success of the company going forward, however, RIM doesn’t have the luxury of putting out a device so targeted to consumers that less than one tenth of one percent of the people who buy it do so primarily for business reasons.

Although the trend is changing, the majority of BlackBerry users out there use their devices because they really need them, in addition to them being cool phones. How many iPhone users truly need an iPhone to support their livelihood? A third of BlackBerry users think that SureType is evil. No keyboard at all will be perceived as “Michael Vick dog fighting” evil for many.

A BlackBerry with a touch screen will be pretty cool. I will surely get one. It will, however, undoubtedly be my other device. Kind of like my iPhone is now.

Touch Screen BlackBerry 9000 Specs

November 30, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 14 Comments

The Boy Genius has made a name for himself by getting the inside scoop on up and coming BlackBerry devices before anyone else. It looks like there won’t be any let down when it comes to the rumored BlackBerry 9000 that will be the first BlackBerry device to sport a touch-screen.

According to BGR, the BlackBerry 9000 series devices will have:

  • 320×480 screen
  • 1 gig of memory
  • 624MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor
  • GPS and Wi-Fi
  • 3G Support (multi-band HSDPA)
  • 2.0 (possibly 3.2) megapixel digital camera

BG is expecting the BlackBerry 9000 series devices to start shipping in the Q1 to Q2 time frame so it will be fun to track all the developments over the next few months.
