Nextel BlackBerry Curve 8350

July 1, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 63 Comments

Update: The BlackBerry Curve 8350i is now available…

Just over a year ago we told you that if you were on Nextel and wanted a new BlackBerry that you needed to switch carriers, however, about 6 months or so ago, we started hearing rumors about a new Nextel BlackBerry running on the iDEN PTT network that would come sometime between this fall and early next year.

Well, today we are hearing rumors that the new Nextel BlackBerry will indeed be a BlackBerry Curve, carrier the model number BlackBerry 8350, and support Wi-Fi 802.11 b and g. We are also hearing that the new Nextel BlackBerry Curve will run BB OS 4.6.1 and be the first Nextel BlackBerry to come without an external antenna.

Blackberry 8350 support WiFi and BB OS 4.6 sounds cool, and the most interesting thing that sound different is Nextel blackberry without external antenna.

Will voice run on Sprint’s network is the question I have. iDen kills unless you reside in a heavily populated area. Running voice off the Sprint network would certainly make this phone an attractive one for many people who like the PTT feature.

Yes it will run on Sprint voice.

    It’s just a Q-Chat BlackBerry, that’s all.

Wrong. This is iDEN only. This is not Q-Chat. It is iDEN. Voice will be on iDEN
not Sprint. It is an upgrade to the 7100i. If you want a Sprint BB, they already have that.

Thank RIM! My company uses Nextel and have several 7100i’s (including myself). By today’s standards they can barely be considered blackberries but as you know they are the only ones available with PTT. (I tried to convince my boss that i really didn’t need PTT so i could get the Sprint Curve, didn’t work :-(.
Anyway this is great news and it has been a long time comming. I know i’ll be first in line (a short line) when they are released. Thanks for the heads up.

Ok so here is my thought on this idea. I was with Nextel for 6 years PTT rocks! IDen data blows……… So They have made a few hybrid phones here and there. CDMA for cellular service and IDen for the PTT. This would be an awesome phone if they did that. I only got rid of Nextel and went to Sprint because my work thought it would work out better for them without consulting the employees. I switched to Sprint and then about 45 days later my co-workers got their Nextels back. I was so frustrated! I could only hope for a hybrid Curve!

I truly can’t believe Sprint has not put a single ounce of energy to capitalize on one of its true strengths in purchasing nextel= Competitive Advantage–that is to say after much time have not brought to market a pda phone w/ push-to-talk. Sprints voice service is strong here in Metro Detroit along w/ Nextel (and yes I know that nextel is an older network) . I truly believe Sprint has taken a bad rap on overall business, but I am going to have to jump on the band wagon here and say how disappointing it is that Sprint does not have the insight to capitalize on one of it’s core competencies since purchasing nextel– that new advantage was supposed to be push to talk along w/ sprint high speed voice/data network. I can’t believe this new 8350 is not even a hybrid. Come on Sprint, because of your lack of action, foresight, whatever you want to call it–you have let nextels ptt slip slowly into our distant memories. Never thought I’d see the day Verizon & AT&T would even get a foot in the door on Push-to-Talk. Sprint! You’ve got the right plans, now capitalize on bring the best of nextel (PTT) to more sprint based phones–especially smartphones/pda’s. Sprint is still my favorite network, but I had to leave it for the iphone3g (by the way, att’s 3G doesn’t come close to sprints high speed performance & consistency)–never the less I stick w/ att & a $160 phone bill because the Sam.Instinct is great, but not great enough to replace the iphone—–BUT, You know what?! A Samsung Instinct, Rim Blackberry, Motorola Q, HTC pda that came with Qchat/Nextel PTT button hands down would have my iphone up on Craigslist in minutes. Sprint! Use the cards you were dealt when you purchased Nextel–Play w/ a full deck! —final thought–if not then sell to T-mobile! (Talk about a company that’s maximized/created competitive advantages out of thin air! They don’t even have 3G, but have capitalized on UMA over Wifi Technology and somehow managed to be an industry changer in landlines offering its landlines @ $10.00 unlimited/month)–not to mention they market in Pink! (ok, I’m rambling, forget that last pink statement–I’m sure women love it)

What’s ticking me off is no one is saying a thing about when. The minute I go out and buy a battery for my 7520 this new phone will come out the next day. I’m excited for the new phone, but dont want it to be on Sprint’s crappy network. It must be a pure Nextel, otherwise I will hop to vze or someone else. Yes, Sprint has tunnel vision, their service sucks, their cs sucks, everything sucks. They ruined a prospering company, totally trashed Nextel because they were too short sighted, killed all Nextel’s existing marketing and did their own thing . Whats amazing is the higher up havent a clue what I or the hardcore people think. They dont ask. If they took a random sampling of the general Nextel population, they would have seen what happened was coming. I predicted this mess long ago. Sprint = Trailer Trash cellular company. It’s just that simple. And we all know you can take Sprint out of the trailer park, but you cant take the trailer park out of Sprint.

Enough is enough! Sprint needs to post the official release date for the 8350…Today! We are all adults here, if they need to push the official date back so be it. Things dont go always the way we plan them and we understand that. But dont leave your loyal customers hanging or they will drop like flies and go with another carrier. I am dissappointed with the way Sprint is handling the release of this phone. My business depends on the PTT and I will wait for the darn thing. Sprint should just be honest and post the release dates for thier phones on thier website. This would clear up all the rumors. If the release date for a certian phone was delayed they could post an update via website. This would make all thier customers happy and the customer service department because they would stop getting so many calls and could refer customers to the website. This my friends make to much sense, so lets hope the rumor of 12/15/08 is right! I love America… If this is the biggest concern we have then we are all truly blessed.

OK, sorry… I just had to say it.
Actually, the phone will be released immediately after Christmas so they are not competing with holiday shopping. Who would want to release something that people will buy BEFORE the holidays?

    6:53:00 PM
Calvin G If the phone does launch on that date, then yes, you can order online at that time. The launch date has been pushed back already, so it’s hard to say if it will still come out on 12/15/2008.

I was at a sprint store yesterday talking with a friend of mine and he said he had seen a test version of the new nextel blackberry when a tech visited the store. Word is that it is a sprint phone but will be labeled nextel. Yes, that means it will run on the sprint network, not the Iden network. It also has the new PTT, not the old school never fails direct connect.

Apparently the reasoning is anyone who wants a smartphone would want to be on the EVDO network and not the Iden network which runs at much lower speeds.

Either way, I’m still buying it.

Sprint released the 8350 Curve BB 12/15/08 at midnight or 12/14/08 at 9:00 pm Las Vegas time. I went online. Logged onto my account. Upgraded my phone and purchased a new 8350 for my wife. Sprint website gave me a breakdown of the cost and then I had them charge it to my account. A few seconds later a recieved an e-mail for confirmation of purchase. It went pretty smooth. I was’nt rushed or pushed to buy accessories by a Sprint CSR. I recommend the online purchase from Sprint’s website. Overnight shipping is free. When I get mine I will give a review.

So, with the addtional $50 credit, plus tax, my complete price paid will have been $148.71 after i receive my $100 rebate check… cool beans.

And to think that I came THAT CLOSE to ordering it online… And, to confirm, it is NOT a hybrid phone… totally 100% iDEN… thanks.

IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! I don’t know why it took Nextel such a long time to come out with and iDEN BlackBerry that is at par with other companies blackberries. While the iDEN (NEXTEL) network is inferior to CDMA (SPRINT), I currently own a cheap Nextel phone and will gladly switch to a Blackberry Curve. For those of you that are wondering why Sprint does not release more hybrid phones; think about this… there are over 17 million Nextel subscribers that would rather use Sprint for voice with Nextel for Direct Connect. Think what 17 million more users would do to Sprint’s network. CHEERS! 🙂 But hey, in my area Nextel is pretty decent, thank you Nextel; it’s about time!!!

For all you who arn’t aware of the facts,

The new Nextel 8350i Blackberry had already been developed before the Nextel/Sprint merger which explains why it’s not QCHAT. This particular blackberry iDEN phone had been pending FCC/goverment approval for quite some time. Nextel Communications had been working hard to keep the iDEN network. i.e. The government wanted to take over iDEN and use it as a private network. Nextel was sold to Sprint and then the progress to get the device approved from the FCC/goverment became quiet. It was only 11 months ago, that Sprint got back on the progress to make this device happen.

This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever had. I’m on my 6th (yes 6th) unit in 6 months. Direct connect only works part time. If someone connects to me it either doesn’t display or allow me to connect back. When you try and look up the contact (if you recognise the voice) and connect to them, it tells you that the radio is not on. It then has to connect to the radio and good luck connecting after that anyway. Also when on a call, someone beeps in and the call waiting either doesn’t display the caller or displays and will not allow you to answer or ignore. Then the speaker phone comes on and everyone can hear your conversation. Then you can’t get to the screen to turn it off and back to head set or blue tooth. It’s an absolute piece of junk. I would expect better service and performance from a CB radio in Tijuana than this. Sprint/Nextel if you weren’t the only game in town I would smash it and send it back in pieces. Who knows maybe it would work better at the bottom of my pool.

When I reply to a text, instead of just the message, it puts a (re:) in front of my message to whoever I am texting. Yes, I know (re) is the reply symbol, but it didn’t used to do this. If I sent a message to someone they only got what I wrote and nothing else. Is there a setting on this phone I need to know about?? Help Please!
