How Long Will It Take Verizon To Release The BlackBerry Curve?

Update 2:  The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Ships Friday, May 9th.

Update: The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Has Been Officially Announced!

Now that Verizon has officially announced that the BlackBerry 8830 will be available just a few months after the release of the BlackBerry 8800 on Cingular, we know that they can get things done without taking the better part of a year. The BlackBerry 8830, however, is a business device and business BlackBerry users live in Verizon’s wheel house.

The big question for me is how long will it take for Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve? Might the Verizon CDMA BlackBerry Curve follow just a few months behind the GSM version or will the company with the nation’s best network revert back to their usual year long lag behind?

Research in Motion announced the BlackBerry Curve differently than they have devices to come before it. The Curve was announced carrier unbranded. We can only assume that RIM didn’t offer a period of exclusivity to any one carrier opting possibly for a bigger payday by allowing all carriers to come out with the BlackBerry Curve relatively around the same time.

If this is the case the only thing really holding Verizon back is the porting the BlackBerry Curve over from GSM to CDMA, a task that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis says can be done quickly, so, I ask the question again. How long will it take Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve?

For real, I’m guessing a year now. At least, I wouldn’t be surprised. I was hoping the Pearl would come to VZW, but since they won’t release a cameraberry, I’d rather have the Curve than the Pearl. I’m guessing 8830 as planned, Pearl by Christmas, Curve in a year. Sad; I hope I’m wrong.

As usual, a great question, Robb.

My guess is that VZW will have their version of the Curve by the end of the year, hopefully in the fall timeframe, and certainly by Christmas season.

I don’t think it would be any sooner than end of summer, given that VZW is releasing the 8830 this month.

And as you’ve said before, there is no good reason why RIM could not release a CDMA Curve concurrent with their GSM versions.

You know, I wonder if RIM would actually rather Verizon release the BlackBerry Curve sooner than later? You wouldn’t think that anyone is paying an exclusivety fee since multiple carriers are coming out with the Curve roughly around the same time so it would seem that RIM would want as many different carriers offering the Curve at the same time as possible.

Robb:
As I’ve noted before, I think it would be smart policy for RIM and VZW to release the Curve very soon, as a competitor to the iPhone. Of course the iPhone will do very well regardless, but it would help both RIM and VZW to have this multimedia Curve out on VZW’s superior 3G networks…that might save a few defectors from leaving VZW and going to AT&T.

Verizon better try to get this out as soon as possible, because it looks much more appealing than the 8830 (unless you need the worldwide service function). I was planning to get an 8830 when my contract was up in August, but now I’ll wait in hopes of Verizon releasing the Curve.

Isn’t it funny how Verizon released the BlackBerry 8830 within a few months of the launch of the 8800 on Cingular, however, the 8800, although selling pretty ok, hasn’t gotten the rave reviews that that the BlackBerry Pearl or even the 8700 did.

Kind of seems like the 8800 is just a dot upgrade until the 8300 bemcomes available.

A verizon release of the curve is what everyone is crossing their fingers for, but besides the camera, what are the pros over the 8830. I was dead set on getting the 8830, but of course RIM had to make my life difficult by teasing me with the curve. I have no clue what to do - a camera isn’t THAT important to me - any thoughts?

calvsams,

The BlackBerry Curve, is a bit smaller and, from what I hear, has a much better keyboard than the 8830. Other than the camera, however, there really isn’t much difference.

Thanks for the input Rob - I think the keyboard is a huge factor, but the camera doesn’t mean much to me. I’ve heard that the Curve has a superior media application, which I find attractive as well. I guess the question I’m pondering is - if the Curve is the 8830 with “extras” then what’s the point of getting the 8830. What does it have that the curve doesn’t (besides GPS)??

My hope is that the 8830 will eventually be able to be upgraded to the latest media player, as would the Pearl.

I guess the point would be if you don’t mind the keyboard on the 8830 and don’t want a camera is that you could get it now. Additionally, the, 8830 is a world phone. Don’t know that the Curve would be.

What are the chances that Verizon will leave the GPS activated on the 8830? I want a smartphone with GPS enabled. If it’s not activated on the 8830, I’ll prob wait for the curve and get a bluetooth GPS receiver.

I have been a very loyal VZW customer and like their service and coverage for my needs and my travels. I have been very disappointed in their new product distribution and in particular their selection of Blackberry. I am definitely moving to the curve as soon as it is available and I am only hoping I don’t need to make a change of carrier. I just about moved to Cingular recently and upgrade to the Pearl, but have resisted long enough to be tempted to wait for the “curve”. Hopefully this turns out to be a home run and not just another shot low and outside!

According to the link above from Seeking Alpha, it seems to me that Verizon will have it by the end of June at the latest. I am ready to pull the trigger on the 8320, but would prefer the Curve. The 8320 will be released next week, but I can wait until the end of June if in fact that is all I have to wait.

I cannot believe this product is going to be offered without GPS! UNBELIEVEABLY STUPID… in particular for the roaming salesperson!!! I cannot believe after all this time and anticipation and supposedly technilogically superior individuals cannot come up with a way to provide GPS service (VZ Navigator) with the ever popular RIM / Verizon software!!!

Or do the power’s that be want it this way???

I too am in Verizon phone pergatory. Getting closer to HELL. Give me a BREAK!!!! Have been waiting since late Feb 07 for a new BB thinking that the 8830 was the ticket. But now the curve is on the radar it complicates matters. 1) will VZW actually get the Curve or will they again fart on the throne & let other providers beat them to the punch? 2) The 8830 has features that are great for international travelers but the Curve seems to be more suitable for the state-side entreprenur. GPS, Camera, better keyboard, etc. Is anyone at the helm leading or are they just adrift? Maybe the caveman went to VZW. I am getting tired of the gas-bags who constantly tout their network - that is what they are supposed to do!!!!!!! OBTIAN new phone agreements & adveristize new PHONES & TECHNOLOGY not the fact that they thousands of network people…. put a few of them on working to get better phone equipment from RIM or PALM.

When will Sprint come out with the BlackBerry Curve?? My contract is up in October and I really want a BlackBerry but I think the only one that Sprint has is the 8703e, which sucks since other companies have newer ones. (Although I heard Sprint released the 8800 World Phone)….hmmmm. I’m thinking that I’m just gonna get the newest BlackBerry out on Sprint at that time. I want it to be the Curve though because it has a camera and it looks awesome without having that “business phone” feel as much since it has a camera. Another question I have…how much is it monthly to have a BlackBerry with internet, email, AOL instant messenger, and text messaging on it? I though it was like, 40 bucks or something, which is A LOT, but I just wanted to make sure.

ATT has the curve and the iphone and verizon has nothing to legitimately compete with either products. I doubt verizon will keep that way for long. One thing to keep in mind is the current curve is not 3G and does not have wi-fi or video capabilities. If verizon gets the curve it will probably be able to one-up ATT’s curve with at least one or all of the features most likely being 3G EV-DO support which would be worth the wait in my opinion.

Thank you. I have been waiting for some Verizon news on the Curve. I picked up the 8830 and I love everything about it but the keyboard. I’m going to return it before my 30 days is up and go back to using my Treo until the Curve (or something better) comes out on Verizon. No matter how much I have phone envy with some of Cingular’s phones, I just can’t give up Verizon’s service. They really do need to take a look at their shortcomings in the phone department.

I just got the Vzw 8830 World Edition and the keyboard is horrible. The buttons are really hard to push (especially when typing fast–the delibiracy required to type makes your knuckles sore if you’re accustomed to the 8703e buttons), and I’m not entirely sure if its because the buttons are raised with a weird texture or if its simply because the buttons are hard. I hope they will soften up with use but have my doubts. If they were really intelligent they would make a Curve with the World Edition features so they don’t force their customer’s into this awkward choice that everyone seems to be stuck in. I don’t care for the cameras on phones (just another feature to make the phone slower responding and bulkier, and the photos have horrible quality anyway) but strictly from a marketing standpoint, they are morons if they do not at least offer the Curve and Pearl. Though I hate the camera feature, I still feel duped for some reason (maybe because of rumors of better software on the Curve…?) Regardless, Verizon criples the Bluetooth features, and is generally anti-progress when it comes to phones, and I cannot understand why. And their Blackberry service stinks anyway. They’ve got something against us maybe? They know we are stuck because of ther better coverage network and customer service, but the Blackberry shortcomings are starting to cancel out those aspects of Verizon’s business in my mind.

I’ve been using Verizon BlackBerry devices for years - including the HORRIBLE 7750 - which I suffered through for almost a year. However, I’m now leaving for ATT to pick up the Curve. My business partner bought one, and it’s pretty nice. I would ’suffer’ through the 8830, but the keyboard will not work for me. Additionally, ATT has a much lower monthly package price…

The 8830’s keys are jammed together, which made it difficult for me to type on it. I played with my friend’s Curve and, while it is smaller, they managed to get space between the keys. It is much easier to type (and dial) on.

I was a devoted Verizon PALM 700W fan for well over a year and, have used palm products for 8 plus years. Never wanting to combine my cell and PDA I did it over a year ago and although having to dismiss the Palm OS for a Windows Mobile based device I thought the PALM 700W series was the way to make the transition. And indeed it was. I really put the phone through it’s paces and even though Palm had it’s glitches with windows it was still a great way to sync my schedule and retrieve and send e-mails that were urgent. Then along came the discussion about how much quicker Balckberry’s were compaired to Palm devices (meaning the sending of messaged / e-mail). I thought to myself . . . if both devices are being used on the same network then how could one be quicker than the other? But low and behold . . . the Blackberry was MUCH quicker when sending out e-mails compaired to the PALM 700WX, why . . . ? I’m not sure, but tested it several time and not once did it take more than 20 seconds to send an E-mail in most cases 10 seconds or less. To me that was a HUGE advantage, and a welcomed plus! So I decided to buy the New Blackberry 8830 and I have to say other than having to learn a completely new way of navigating a phone, the Blackberry 8830 is a superior phone to the PALM 700wx. It’s syncs with Outlook 2007 with no issues WHATSOEVER and in a lot less time. Has a much nicer screen, and once you get used to the trackball on the 8830 there’s no need to fiddle with a stylus (or lose one for that matter). The keyboard is fine, a little small but gets the job done. I will say though that as soon as they release the Curve (if and when) on Verizon, I will be upgrading immediately! Blackberry has really swayed me into believing in them and being a devoted fan of their products. Trust me all you naysayers about the 8830, coming from a PALM 700wx the 8830 is FAR Superior. Battery life, Screen, Media Player, Sound, Speaker Phone, Charges off your PC while connected (Palm always needed additional power supply into the connector).

Need I say more . . . ?

I can’t wait for the CURVE now even though I’ll be paying full retail . . . who cares?

To be honest, I was a windows based pda guy at first, but I got the 8703 and fell in love. BB perform so much better. Now with the pros, the few cons the phone has really do suck, like their whole web browser. I feel its booty, I hope they work that out on the curve. The email instant notification is soo hott but the 50 bux a month kinda blows. Ohwell, as long as they can tweak the web on the curve ill b happy, cause shit man I’m gonna have to by that bitch at full price so it better b hot. And it better hit shelves in the next 3-4 mos. Been on vzw since late 80s (lots of name changes!). I really believe it has superior service. As a sales manager, have compared lots of phones and plans. Currently have treo650p. Like it, but its too big, too thick, has an antenna sticking out, etc. Really like having a phone/pda. Must have a camera. There are places I can’t take my phone into. So I just leave it in the car for an hour. I don’t take calls when I am with a client anyway. But the camera has turned out to be big deal. I was changing an oil filter on a boat. The store didn’t give me the right filter. I called and tried to explain what I needed, was difficult, asked if she had email, took out treo, took picture , emailed it, she knew immediately which part i needed. Little things like this.

The world phone can’t do it. I didn’t know about the keyboard issues, that is interesting, but the curve is the right product.

The Q is not going to cut it, also noticed that vzw had it for $99 on promo during the spring, its now back to 199. Not sure if that is because it was selling so well, or not.

Curve on VZW. Need to know , cause my 650 needs replacing. Can wait till xmas, but would love to know to make plans.

I am not a BB user… I have the Moto q and need an email type of phone…
I have had the Q since it drop on the market sometime last year… while I find it extremely comfortable to use… for some reason Moto phones seem to crash and freeze up a lot and the camera sucks to name a few things.

so went to the vzw store to check up on some phones and seen the BB8830… and was very impressed (I couldn’t believe I hadn’t looked into one before)…

I came home and did the research and seen the BBcurve - but wait only for att? hell nooooes… was with att back in the day and there service sucked so did their customer service (which I don’t doubt has improved but I do not want to leave vzw anyway)

I come upon this site and others searching for when the curve will be released on vzw… I have gotten no answers but did come across this site http://blog.andrewparker.net/2007/08/02/verizons-getting-a-curve-like-blackberry/

I’ve owned a bb for 3 years. Found it to be the integrated piece of magic missing in my life. NOBODY does email better, period.
Having 7 different email accts forwarded to one travelling handheld kicks ass, let me tell you. Especially when travelling. Now.. The Complaina-Saurus ™..
What is wrong with these morons at vz? You know the american way is literally about “choice”.. Why can’t i have one berry with ALL the features on it?? What the hell is wrong with them? I have an 8700 now, love it, but t-mob has slowest / worst signal.
I compared an 8700 from vz, and it performed literally in 1/3 the time. I would switch instantly to vz if they would give me the ability to do what every other industry does.. I’d like the ability to CHOOSE which options on my car.. I’m a big boy, and I WANT the bells and whistles, dammit! How unbelievably stupid! I had the worldphone 8830 in mt habds, i was literally at the checkout.. And then saw it had no camera.. Are they insane? 500 bucks, and you delete ( and the word is delete ) the camera functionality? Give me the ability to choose the Options i want, and, like most americans, I’ll take em all! I Want a camera! I Want GPS. I Want stereo bluetooth music streaming ability. And i Want 5 of them.. Yesterday! God, i just have trouble believing that a company would go out of their way to piss you off. Go to japan, look at the phones, hell, they have 4g.. I’d literally throw out the landline is they’d provide the features, That The Phone Has Freakin Built In! Ahhhh.. Sorry, had to do that, otherwise, postal time..lol.. Seriously.. Does anybody think a massive email / protest campaign to vz would get them off their asses, cause, we all have berrys, and it would be astounding if vz got a zillion berry users telling them, within minutes, to Wake Up. Thanks for the space to vent. Gregory, s189@tmo.blackberry.net

Well, the 8830 is meant for business environments, not for the usual consumers. A lot of companies will not allow camera phones on their property due to security reasons. I think they made the right move. That is why the curve has a camera, its more for a consumer than a businessman.

Verizon is getttign worse and worse. I predict they will end up like the original AT&T. Their arogance has gotten the best of them. Even when they eventually get the phones that their competitors have had for a while, and are usually onto the next manifestation, Verizon disables many of the features due to their own greed. The “World Phone”……the first BB from Verizon that you could use overseas……many years after their competitors have had BB’s that could travel, because of Verizon’s “US only” technology network…….thye diabled the GPS function. Do you think they will maintain the Wi-Fi function on the Curve? No way.

Their arrogance has kept them from understanding web 2.0…….it is about the consumer being in control, hence, Time Mags. person of the year: “YOU”………

The iPhone gets it………Verizon could never allow a full functioning iPhone. They will lose their selfish bet in the future.

If I am wrong, the curve will be available by Christmas, GPS enabled, Wi-Fi enabled, world phone capability, full internet search, 8gigs of flash memory built in, a battery that will last for weeks for one all inclusive monthly plan price of $50.oo per month!

Lets all urge our congressman to support google in purchasing the soon to be available mobile spectrum so we can get great US service and Int’l service, and watch Verizon wonder what happened to their customers!

Wish I had more info. I asked a zillion questions re: the features etc. but the salesperson said that he had seen a list of what would be released for the 4th qtr but had no details. This is a store in the shadows of Dell Comp. in RR. He mentioned 10/7 as a date they would have (on/after?) more info - they had no training scheduled for new items as of yet. Fingers crossed, hopefully this is real.

Verizon is NOT comming out with Curve at least until spring. They are and always have been a year behind. AND when they do come out with it, it will not have all the features………..at best it will have verizon versions of the features which you will pay extra for.

Don’t worry, their arrogance will bring them down. Keep rooting for Google to free up and simplify the mobile industry in the US so we can use our devices everywhere in the world and that they will be the most cutting edge available………

I was hoping for a 4th quarter release and once again Verizon is proving to be a big disappointment. The Pearl is their 4th quarter RIM release, so I’m not holding my breath any longer. A Curve from ATT is now on the top of my Christmas list. Sorry, Virginia, there is no Verizon Curve.

Teriyaki, the Verizon reps are all similar to the person who had a friend who knew the brother of the nurse when Richard Gere was in the emergency room. I have not heard the same story from any rep mentioned on any of these threads. Why would Vz do a heavy promo on new phones and not mention the Curve. Makes no sense to me. Its bs my contract expired on the 22nd of October with verizon. I will leave them if the 3G iPhone is out before the vzw curve. Also if they are both announced at the same time I will go with the most affordable plan. iPhone is less expensive plan for the same unlimited access from what I see. I told VZW this not too long ago. They called and said sorry no news.

Thoughts?

AT&T experienced its biggest single-quarter net gain in mobile subscribers, thanks in part to its exclusive deal with iTunes, adding 2 million net mobile subscribers (1.1 million of them iPhone users) during the Q3. AT&T is now the biggest wireless carrier in the U.S. with 65.7 million subs.

If Verizon had a relationsip with its suppliers it would be able to test phones and stay with ahead or at least with the wave.

Remember, verizon will ALWAYS disable features even if they come out with a phone. They suck. And as others improve their network……which is happening every day…….

I have been a loyal verizon customer for 8 years . I like their customer service but their BB selection sucks. I out of contract with my company contract and we are all switching to at&t if there is no curve by xmas. If verizon wants to hold out on the curve, their customers will not. For all those in a contract, pay the 150 and get out to a iphone or curve. They will make up the cash for convience in no time. Sorry verizon.

We were out of contract with Verizon. To say we were long time customers is an understatement… we had been customers since they were CellularOne (blast from the past). Well, we just ported to T-Mo to get the Curve. It is absolutely wonderful. After f*#@ng with my Treo600 and Treo 700p for years with bodges to try to get them, unsuccessfully, to work. The BB Curve worked out of the freakin box. Everything… IT JUST WORKED. I am upset I waited so long. I will not look back - to either Palm or Verizon.

First, MSM, I might be a “tool”, but I researched all the options for over 6 months..

Read from pinstack and blackberry forums, but nada..

I have an account with Verizon, because they simply get coverage in palm springs,CA, a desert, where others don’t.

So mom in CA gets the verizon phone.

Tried to get a family plan to include me and my gal in NY, but its “impossible”, because NY is a “different market”.

Rob, I couldn’t agree more..

Verizon is cutting their own neck.

I couldn’t take it anymore, and I’m writing this on my new Curve from t-mobile.

This is the result of customer dissatisfaction..

I now have 2 different providers for one family..

Yes, t-mob data is 3 times slower, but cust-serv is the best.

It worked out of the box.

Wi-Fi took 2 tries, now when I’m near a router, Any router/modem/wifi, I get a signal..

And the wi-fi “diagnostics” in “options” under wi-fi is truly terrific and informational..

Its like logging in to your own home routers address page using administrator mode/rights..

Ip address, wan, vlan, you name it..

The way it Should be..

And when I’m on the wi-fi, which is about 2-3 times faster than edge, I don’t think about Verizon so much..

I guess ill have to wait another year for Verizon to add the phones to its lineup, That Already Exist, so I can have a faster network..

Hey, maybe 4g will come here by then, like the rest of the civilized world.. lol..

Thanks for all your insightful comments..

Gregory,
As of the 11th of this month, Verizon merged all of their billing markets in to one billing market called “vision one.” It is now possible to have numbers on a family share calling plan anywhere in the country. It has always been possible to put a new york number and california number on the same bill, they just couldn’t share the minutes.

With much apprehension I decided to try the ATT curve 2 (8310). I hated Verizon’s World Phone (couldn’t read the keys) and returned it w/in 30 days. Wanted the integrated GPS, but feared ATT’s rep for bad service. So far I am very satisfied. Called tech support twice (no wait; much better than Verizon’s blackberry support; not as good as T-Mobile’s). No problems with phone quality. Love the GPS and total package. Glad I didn’t wait for Verizon and T-Mobile to get it. Also the ATT sales rep has a curve and gave me his cell phone # in case of problems/questions. He also transferred my data from Verizon phone for me. I am very happy!
One note: Unlike Verizon, ATT does not publish its tech support phone number on booklet; had to get it online. But I liked my experience with ATT tech support better than Verizon’s. I left Verizon for a better blackberry at T-Mobile. Their dedicated blackberry support was fabulous, but sound quality and dropped calls drove me away.

I don’t understand all of the complaining. Verizon has a lot of faults but I always come back to the service. In Philadelphia Verizon rules. I can count on one hand how many dropped calls I have had in the last 8 years. All of my friends with AT&T are always complaining about the service. Being able to make a call is the 1st, 2nd & 3rd priority. I love my 8830. I wish it had a camera for the occaisional snaps although I have 3 cameras and wouldn’t consider my phone for anything more than a joke.I also wish the keyboard was easier to use. But I can make a go of it and its benefits far outweigh its defects. I have over a thousand contacts, thousands of calandar events and everything works seemlessly. I use BES and wirelessly synch without a hitch. I get my mail before my desktop. I can use the internet to retrieve numbers, addresses etc with ease. I will never get another phone and for someone who has had 15 phones in the last 5 years.

Thanks for the info on markets, Billy..

If they ever DO get a curve, ill get a few of ‘em..one for everybody in the fam.

As for t-mob curve, i’ve been playing wiht it, and I have to tell u some sweet features..

If you “turn off” the gsm-gprs cell radio signal, wifi will still connect..

So u can be in a basement with no wireless coverage at all, but if there’s a wireless router anywahere withing 50 to 100 feet, you get internet via wifi..

More amazing is that after about a minute, you’ll get UMA (unlicenced mobile access?)! Whic means, hey!

All of a sudden, you can make calls, on t-mob network, via the wifi router.

This is killer if you’re in a place that’s out of coverage range, basment, etc..

And, unlike the complaints I’ve seen. Ok, there’s an occassional dropout call, but the sound wuality via UMA is almost like a landline..

Stupendous featuere..

Although t-mob doent advertize it, you don’t need their 10 buck hotspot@home service plan to do this, ANY open wifi router gives you UMA, ie, both data and cell.

(Pay attention..extra-special undoc feature..

From ANYWHERE, including overseas..

Lol

Wonder if its a local call from france, say, using uma over wifi..

;->

Additionally, you tecnically dont even need a “data plan”..

The brower can be set for wifi, and hey, bingo, free internet!

The stereo bluetooth kicks ass..

I got a Motorola DC 800 adapter, plugged it into the AV jacks, both in and out, of my home stereo-puter setup, killer..

Streams your mp3 dorectly to ur home system..

Bidirectionally..

Real sweet..

Not to mention the Curve has all these file transfer options using bluetooth..

A true convergence minded phone..

Hell, if it had Skype integrated, like some wifi skype phoens, I wouldn’t need a provider at all.. Literally..

1/3 of the world has wifi now, itls only going to grow.

Yes, the berrys not as pretty a screen as an i-phone, and now, it doesn’t play flash movies like u-yube, but, they’ll fix it..

Likewise, a faster processor would have been sweet..

In the meantime, I truly coulnt be happier..

This phone makes me happy,,

The 2 mp cam is adjustable settings wise, and does a real decent job.

All in all a superiour conv ergence unit, very-well thought out.

Btw, you can also use the phone for wardriving (or even warwalking)..

Beem casually mapping wifi in the neighboorhood lately..

Was in a starbucka, the wanted 10 bucks for a day pass..

Alsong with their 5 coffee..

Pressed “scan for networks, it found an open linksys..

With the tracking (ping) feature, I just slowly wlaked until a head the thing beep faster and faster..

So I wound up having that coffe in a pizza joint 3 doors from starbucks..

Tota cost, 50 cent coffee, free internet..

Ahh, welcome to the way the eorld is supposed to work..

I deliberately leave my home router open for this reason..

Community, right?

Overall impression, killer phone, great call sound, wifi, a2dp stereo bluetooth, 2mp cam with adjustable settings, 4oz, thin, I slip it in my pocket, that’s how small it really is..

Oustanding..

As for the 3g issue, you know what Truly pisses me off?

Theuyve just come out wit a chip that can receivee decode any signal, cdma like v erizion, gsm-edge like t-mob or att..

B ut they deliberately won’t be releasing it to cell market yet..

Only for laptop pcmcia adapters..

Who’s the evil ones?

Better, who’s the stupid ones?

Throw skype amd gps and 3G in this phone, and I’d notonly die and be in heaven, I’d know that I’m really liv-ng in the future..

Which is where most of us early tech adopters are..

Buy the wifi curve
From t-mob, you won’t be dissappointed..

Ciao, Gregory

Gregory,

Where are you from? I think this is very sensitive to location. As for wifi, you would need someone with an unsecured router to hook up to. The UMA is very interesting. I have thought about going to t-mobile just for the reason that verizon’s customer service blows.

I spoke with a VZW rep in Michigan and I was told that Verizon has no plans to release the BB Curve because VZW has a contract with RIM stating that they will not release a BB that has a camera. He said VZW has large business contracts and that the BB is a business phone whereas most business people are not allowed to bring cameras into the office/boardroom. Also, he stated he did not know how they were even able to release the Pearl. I was upset because I really wanted the curve ( I currently have the 8703e) and just recently signed a 2 yr. contract with Verizon.

OK, now how logical does that sound? If Verizon can carry the Pearl then they can certainly carry the Curve. The Pearl is the newest addition to the verizon / blackberry family and it’s working just fine. It’s essentially the same EXACT phone as the Curve, just smaller. Camera and all. I don’t know who all these Verizon Reps all you people are talking too but they obviously aren’t too up to speed on their own companies developmental expansion. It CAN and WILL be sold as a non GSM phone. Just hang in there and stop listening to all the rumors out there. Verizon will be making some MAJOR advances over other carriers very very soon. “Verizon Rep” just means store clerk. These posts have been pretty much wrong about every thing in the past. The 8830 is old technology, it’s too big and no one is happy with the keyboard. Verizon is always slow, but if they brought out the Pearl they will bring out the Curve. Even “business’ customers want “consumer’ features and the size and keyboard alone will have tons of their business cutomers wanting to upgrade to the curve. So many verizon customers had the 8700 and prefer that keyboard to the 8830. Verizon needs the curve, it’s just a matter of time.

I spent the day at the mall yesterday — looking for a new phone that would combine the two - the Cruve is perfect ( a camera too). I am SO frustrates that I would have to switch to ATT to get the CURVE — but I just might have to! I agree, VZ is missing out on a GREAT phone. I looked at the Pearl and even the VZ rep. did not recommend it! I called VZ and they will NOT tell you anything! I am going to keep checking here to see if anyone has any insight. My boss wants me to have a Curve like she does and gave me money for it but Verizon doesn’t have it! PLUS they’re not inclined to let me “upgrade” to a Blackberry before my renewal date. They’d charge the full price for the NON-Curve Blackberry in the meantime. Yes! I’m very frustrated also! Even disappointing communication is easier to deal with than no answers–though if the Curve is such a successful item in other carriers, you’d think Verizon would want a piece of the action, wouldn’t you?

I’ve been waiting for the Curve and to not have heard anything about when they’re going to get it is driving me crazy. My contract is up in April–supposedly it’s supposed to be out by end of Q1. It’s amazing how ignorant people are concerning this situation. It’s not a simple matter of throwing a verizon logo on to the blackberry. All of the carriers that currently have the curve are GSM carriers, and Verizon is cdma. The current curve must be produced to work on the cdma network. In other words, it is a completely different product that has to be manufactured, tested, and licensed to run on Verizon’s network.

TO: BILLY

I think it’s amazing you think that people are ignorant about venting on a topic that is clearly not out of ignorance. It makes perfect sense that VERIZON can carry the curve. They already support the Pearl which is a GSM phone on all other carriers. So . . . if they can support the Pearl . . . which is VIRTUALLY the same thing as the Curve only smaller and without the full QWERTY Keypad . . . then what would be the reason they are dragging their feet? “IN OTHER WORDS” (if I may steal a quote) . . . why would there have to be so much more testing for almost the same exact product. So, please try not to lump people in the same catagory of ignorance as you think to see fit. It’s dismissive, sometimes people just want to vent . . . that’s what this site is for and also to get possible updates on a release date. Not for pointing out what you think of people.

Initially when I did research to find out the time table for the Verizon Curve it was supposed to ship late Q1 or early Q2. However my friend that works for Verizon said they’ll start taking orders and shipping in late February so looks like we’ll have to wait another 2 months. However I think it’ll be worth the wait since you can either choose the WiFi version or the GPS version.

Sorry if I offended you NY CamMan. I was simply referring to the fact that most people here are acting as if Verizon is purposefully postponing the delay of the curve, which is not the case. The fact of the matter still remains that the curve is a different product. You’re right, the pearl and curve are similar, however they are not the same. The treo 755p came out on a GSM platform well over a year ago, and it is just now hitting verizon shelves. GSM and CDMA are two entirely different technologies which require entirely different sets of programs and trouble shooting.

What’s this I’m hearing about GPS vs. WiFi? You can’t have both?

Billy,
I don’t think Verizon is necessarily holding out on purpose (and I didn’t take the “ignorant” comment personally–it was a good point). However, I think the point is (and the frustration is) that Verizon will not even let people know if the Curve is a product they will eventually carry or give any kind of idea how long we have to wait. If there is an exclusive deal with the other carriers (as AT&T’s advertising leads us to believe), then they would certainly know something, and could leak it at the grassroots level for the people who are really, really interested.

Many of us loyal Verizon people are just that–LOYAL. And we would likely stick it out and wait–even 6 more months. On the other hand, I don’t want to wait 6 months if there is no plan to release. “Mum’s the word” around here in Verizon land. I want to know where to put my money next whether now or in 6 months, and by not saying anything at all, Verizon is alienating people who would likely stick by them–that’s bad business. I’m very discouraged that they won’t say a word about it–good or bad because SOMEONE COULD step up and clear this up.

Perhaps there is more to it than the technology aspect–perhaps they’re worried that it will cut into their Pearl sales…wouldn’t surprise me but more choices (having both Pearl and Curve) would serve them so much better financially, so I’m not sold on that theory. I find it hard to believe that Verizon Execs would have that kind of ignorant thinking anyway.

As far as I know, the curve is currently still being tested and troubleshooted (if that’s a word) on verizon. The reason they don’t give definitive answers is so that if something goes wrong in the development of the product, and they aren’t able to offer it, then they could get themselves into a lot of trouble. In all honesty, it’s only a matter of time. It took us forever to see a cdma pearl, and the curve is next in line

I’ve got no “insider” input but my comments, FWIW, are that Verizon has always been known to take forever to release a new product… because they have to make it work on CDMA and ALSO (importantly) because they’re very serious about only selling products that work reliably, meaning they won’t do like the others and release things to appease anxious customers while making most users suffer with a myriad of “issues” that could be avoided with more troubleshooting prior to product release.

When I bought my first Palm years ago, I spoke with very senior tech support people at AT&T (who I had gotten it from) as well as at Palm, since I was having a lot of major issues. I was having Treos replaced and being told many “versions” of what would have to be done to fix the issues. I finally got hold of one of the most senior techs at Palm in their entire company. I said, “Listen, man, I run a fast-growing company and I do not have time to keep wrestling with this. Please tell me what I have to do to have it work reliably and without my having to keep dealing with tech issues. I just don’t have time for that!”

He said, “If you’re a busy businessman and don’t have time for constant issues and need it to work reliably, then go return it to AT&T and buy one from Verizon. I was on the team that did the troubleshooting of their Palm device. They not only have the best network by far but also the best software and do the most thorough troubleshooting before they release a product. They do a really class job. If you get it from them, you can be sure you’ll have little or no issues and will be able to go back to work.”

And that was my experience. Not “no” issues, but few and far between, and when I wanted one replaced they simply replaced it.

As to not letting the cat out of the bag on a “planned” or “estimated” release date, there’s no way for them to possibly know when or even “if” it will finally get the seal of approval from the testing-and-tweaking department, and in my mind a lot of “iffy” promises about a release date — which probably can’t and won’t be reliably lived up to — is a lot less professional than simply announcing it when it’s ready to ship. (Plus, I’m sure there’s something to be said for wanting people to buy current models, and, well… look at Apple — mum’s the word until the date of release, always. Compared to Microsoft, who tosses out hot air on ETAs like it was just a big joke.)

I personally can understand why Verizon can’t and won’t say anything. And why it has to take so much longer to release “reliable” phones — especially when they’re as complex as a Blackberry on CDMA.

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that the reason we all want it from Verizon is that we know IT WILL WORK once we have it! That doesn’t happen by accident… and you can’t push the river, as they say.

Having said all that, I’m as anxious as the rest and keep checking to see if it’s been announced yet. I just don’t “hate” them for the delays and the silence. I can understand the technical and policy reasons.

Couldn’t they just announce that they are planning to release the curve? After contacting Verizon reps today, they have said that it will not be available and will not work on their network. It would be nice to know if they are working on it so I can either get a new phone or wait it out.

I inquired about the BB Curve to my corporate representative today and I here’s the answer that I got.

“I can NOT comment on any future releases of our phones”

The real answer is that VZW is either keeping the lid shut on the release news but it sounds more like they’re just NOT releasing it anytime soon. I say Sprint will have it sooner then VZW.

Wow, tj says sprint will have it first. He sounds pretty official, I might as well go ahead and terminate my verizon contract. Seriously though, Verizon reps (and blackberry account managers for that matter) are not allowed to divulge any information concerning the release of a new device until either Verizon or the device manufacturer (RIM in this case) has made an official press release.

I asked the local store manager, who I know pretty well, and she said in a very “professional” sorta way: “We don’t have it, and we haven’t heard anything about it.” That’s EXACTLY what I’d expect. It’s very obvious the policy is what the policy is… NOBODY in
