How Am I Billed For Skype Mobile? — Verizon Breaks It Down

March 26, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 9 Comments

One of the top questions that Verizon customers have about Skype Mobile is, “How am I billed for Skype Mobile?”  Verizon has created a Skype Mobile FAQ that answers this question and more.

While there are no monthly subscription fees for Skype mobile, Skype mobile is currently only available on select BlackBerry and Android 3G Smartphones with a data feature starting at $29.99.

This chart breaks down billing for Skype Mobile, however, to make a long story short, you can make and receive unlimited Skype to Skype calls, Skype to International numbers use your Skype minutes, and Skype to domestic numbers use your regular Verizon minutes.

There is no way that Verizon would give up money on domestic minutes and I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they get a percentage of the money Skype makes on international SkypeOut calls made via Verizon devices.

I’m less than impressed with the app. I’m running it on my Droid. The beta, which they removed from the market after the deal was struck, was a much better app and allowed you to use wifi.

I am pretty sure that they removed the ability for this to work over wi-fi so that they lock it in to Verizon.

I actually like the app on my BlackBerry Tour. I have a lot of friends and family in Germany and we use Skype all the time to communicate. This will allow me not to have to schedule times to talk to as they can get to me via Skype no matter where I am…

You raise an extremely good point of how most plan to use it. I called Verizon as I wanted to use Skype when I was in Germany to call back to the US but was told that would not use skype minutes. For my use case it is not as good but I think your is how 90% of people want to use it.

Can someone clarify something about Skype? If I use my USA mobile blackberry while I am OUT of the USA for BOTH of the following two scenarios – Scenario #1: I call a USA number – Scenario #2: I call a foreign country phone number. For each scenario, will I be charged Skype rates from the USA or the usual roaming international rate?

    Thanks in advance.

My two scenarios are NOT referring to when I call a Skype phone number, by the way.

    Dido Scott’s previous question:
“If I use my USA mobile blackberry while I am OUT of the USA for BOTH of the following two scenarios – Scenario #1: I call a USA number – Scenario #2: I call a foreign country phone number. For each scenario, will I be charged Skype rates from the USA or the usual roaming international rate?” Also, if I purchase the Unlimited World Extra from skype, is the 19.99 a month added to the phone bill?
