Does the BlackBerry 8700c support MP3?

October 31, 2005 by Robb Dunewood 10 Comments

Does the BlackBerry 8700c support MP3? The short answer to this question is yes, but, before you go trading your iPod or Motorola Rokr for a new BlackBerry 8700c, which is rumored to be released tomorrow, MP3 support for the BlackBerry 8700c is only for ringtones.

If you really think about it, it wouldn’t make sense for the BlackBerry 8700c to have a fully integrated MP3 player. There isn’t enough internal memory to hold more than just a few MP3s and RIM still has yet to add removable memory to it’s BlackBerry devices. I do think, however, that MP3 capability will one day come to the BlackBerry because it is becoming standard on most PDA type devices.

It supposedly supports MP3 for ringtones, but unless I’ve done something very wrong, I cannot get it to play any MP3 I uploaded to it today to save my life. It appears as though Cingular has done something disable use of MP3’s unless they were downloaded from their site… for a fee. I have calls into Cingular and Blackberry to confirm/deny that this is the problem. I feel pretty certain that they’ve done something to block it because I uploaded the same ringtones to my wifes Sony Ericsson Z520a and they worked just fine. If anyone has any insight here please let me know what I may have done wrong.

    Heya Jay,

I was able to load a few onto my 8700c. I posted them first to my website, then used the Cingular browser. It brought up RIMs internal sound player. I made sure that the mp3s were very short(less than 64K). From the player I was able to save them into RIMs file system. This method also worked well for MIDI files.

Now I gotta figure out how to remove them 🙂

    awaybbl,

When you figure it out let us know. That would make for a good BlackBerry 8700 Tip.

To remove the sounds, go to the 8700c’s profile manager. Pick the menu item “show tunes”, then select the one you want to play/set as phone tune/delete.

I have an 8700c and am trying to load a homemade, 20sec mp3 ring tone to it via USB (I don’t have the email or web service on it). It says it supports Mp3 ring tones but how do you get them on there with USB? I’m using version 4.1 on the Desktop Software. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Zach,

You will need to post your MP3 rington to a live website, point your BlackBerry browser to it, and download it over the air.

    Ok,
But this can’t be done w/o the BB internet service correct? Since I don’t have the web service on it, could I possibly use a Bluetooth transfer from my PC to the device? Or does it boil down to no internet service = no downloads

    Thanks Robb

Known problem : your MP3 ringtone has the correct format, you download it from a webSite, it plays on your blackberry, but you cannot save it to use it as a melody.
