BlackBerry Storm 9530 Gets OS 5 Update

October 27, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 27 Comments

Verizon’s official announcement of the  the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 wasn’t the only big BlackBerry news coming out of the largest wireless company in the nation today.  They’ve also released BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.328 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530.

A little credit goes to Verizon for actually releasing OS 5 for the BlackBerry Storm before releasing the BlackBerry Storm2.  I am sure that a bunch of head to head BlackBerry Storm with OS 5.0.0.328 vs. BlackBerry Storm2 reviews will hit the web in the next 24 hours or so, but we’ve heard that even though the Storm2 has clear hardware advantages over the original Storm, the new OS 5 update gives the original Storm many of the same OS enhancements coming in the Storm2.

You can find a list of some of the OS 5.0.0.328 enhancements after the jump.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 OS 5.0.0.328 Ehnacements:

  • Significant improvements in rotation detection and screen painting have been introduced in this software.
  • Device displayed a white bar at the bottom of the screen after a rotation event.
  • When setting a custom SMS tone for a single contact, this tone may playback unexpectedly for SMS’ received from other contacts.
  • When swiping down the virtual keyboard in an MMS message the send and save draft icons did not appear as expected.
  • When viewing an SMS there was no simple way to call the current user.
  • Now the user can select the number from the Callback Number field or from the message body and call that number from the pop up menu.
  • The delete prior function has the unwanted side-effect of triggering the compose email screen.
  • The user cannot configure their profile settings to increase the number of alerts when being notified of an event such as incoming SMS or email.
  • Previous software versions did not allow the user to increase the count of notifications (i.e. Beep 5 times when when I get an email and beep 3 times when I get an sms). In this software, this is now allowed with counts from 1-10.
  • When trying to set a home screen background of a certain resolution (more specifically a resolution matching either the width or the height of the native resolution of the LCD) it may have appeared as a black screen.
  • When trying to edit/create a folder, the virtual keyboard did not render to allow the user to enter the names of said folders.
  • Intermittently, when streaming a video while doing a handover to 2G on a 3G network the video would stop playing.
  • If you paused a video recording and then resumed, the icon state may not have reflected the current recording state.
  • After recoding a video of a certain size (7M) the saved video may be corrupted and unplayable.
  • During manual network selection, the radio buttons associated with the networks did not render as expected.
  • When moving out of coverage your device display for no coverage may have been inconsistent.
  • During voice calls, your device may have reset on a rare occasion.
  • After viewing and accepting the End User Licensing Agreement of the App World application the application doesn’t startup (fixes introduced in the latest version of App World).
  • On some rare occasions, the device may reset on its own during a voice call or while idle.
  • During an MTP side load of 16GB of music, the device would leak memory and stop the transfer at ~75%.
  • During device full boot-up, the progress bar skips from 0% complete to ~66% complete instead of showing a gradual progression (Note: from 66% to 100% it does show a gradual progression).

You can get Os 5.0.0.328 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 here…

The best way I’ve found to get this is this link:
    http://worldwide.blackberry.com/update/blackberrystorm.jsp

I had to disable the auto-word feature and go back to auto-correct. Other than that, the rotation is great, the typing is great, the new flick-scroll is nice, but not necessary. There is so much to love about this…granted…we’ve all come from the perspective of a buggy OS just waiting for the next release to come out. This is what should have been.

A HUGE improvement! I agree…Definitely what it should’ve been from conception. I also noticed a huge increase in available app memory. But what’s up with the Browser?!? I can’t even log on to hotmail.com! And my FoxSports launcher stopped working. That’s pissing me off a little but other than that…all I can say is FINALLY!!!!

Have you figured out the hotmail problem yet. And does your storm dim when you rotate.

No haven’t figured it out yet. This is what I get

“The Microsoft service that you are attempting to access is not supported by the mobile browser you are using. The minimum browser requirement for this service is full WAP 2.0 support.”

Also I still can’t view the NBC videos either. I thought that would’ve been fixed but I guess not.

Screen doesn’t dim when I rotate it…not yet at least ;P

I love the screen response. I don’t like the way SMS messages are handled. A small screen and even smaller in lanscape. The keyboard should automatically hide with an icon to lauch it.

To get around the browser issue you have to go into browser configuration and change the browser identification to firefox or internet explorer. That worked for me. Sucks, I know. You would think with an upgrade this wouldn’t happen.

Thanks! It worked but it does suck because sites that usually recognize the BB as a mobile device and direct you immediately the mobile version now won’t be able to do that. But at least I can view the messages that I don’t keep stored on my BB. =)

I like that finally the accelerometer is responding much faster. But one big glitch is that when I’m in landscape mode on the main screen when I’ve applied a theme, I either get these white bars on the left and right or the background image is messed up. Hope they fix this very soon.

the update was good AT first. then it went off the deep end for me. It froze ,then i had to do a battery pull. after it restarted i got the white screen of death. all the screen said was to reload software . it wouldnt do anything . it was just stuck there. took it to Verizon tech at verizon said its been happing to other phones . now im just waiting for my NEW phone yo arrive. the only cool thing about this is that my old phone was really beat up. and i dont have to mess with updating my new phone . it already comes with OS 5 installed .

Well… Finally a step in the right direction. v5.0 fixes many issues such as better response, memory loss is far less, and a better overall experience.

New bugs include, on default themes do not work in landscape, icons go missing (ie BB Messenger) and you loss BBM contacts.

One fix for the BBM I have discovered…
    1. Uninstall BBM from the handset.
    2. Download v5.0 BBM on the BB Desktop.
    3. Reinstall BBM from the BB Desktop.
    4. You will find the BBM in the new Instant Messenger Folder on your BB Storm!

    Hope this helps!

One thing I did for the update was to NOT install anything additional that wasn’t ver 5.0. I downloaded them from APP WORLD later. I had no issues and I guess got lucky around the Messenger issue since I downloaded it fresh to begin with. I had no issues with icons not appearing or anything else. Just this unresponsive GMAIL issue.

If anyone hasn’t heard there is a glitch that occurs when using custom themes in landscape view with the new OS, which results in FUBARing of the background. Overall I believe the OS is greatly improved aside from the glitch, however if you are particularly fond of your theme I suggest waiting for a patch to be released

LOL.. just get a storm 2. Yes the upgrade to 5.0 is nice, But the storm 2 is more stable. i just bought it and it is a sweet phone. very quick and responsive. i bought it after trying it out in the store. I bought it the next day and i use it for T-mobile with all its features. I just couldnt wait for the Bold 9700. the only major difference besides touchscreen is the faster processor on the Bold 9700.

I like the update overall, but there are FAR TOO MANY GLITCHES. Beyond the fact that any customized themes no longer work, several websites aren’t recognized, you cannot play videos online-youtube is the only one that works, you can no longer upload pics straight to facebook, twitter, etc…the only option is email or mms, and “uncaught error” message comes up multiple times a day. ARG.
I like the messaging which is now more like chat, and the phone runs a bit smoother, but it’s not worth all the above. I think I’m going to switch back to the old version until they get some of these things fixed. It’s a hassle.

This update is cool and it is so bad at the same time. This just reminds me why Apple is Apple and everything else is a product of Microshaft not ensuring their software works before putting it out.

I have several issues with the 5.0.0.328 “update”
The most annoying is NEW MESSAGES –

The way text messages are now stored is not functional. It puts all of the messages from the same sender into one location and it mashes them all together. You can not start a new message and keep just that correspondence. Now it puts all of the texts that were made with that one person in one, so when you go to review that particular stream of replies it is just added to all the others.

New text messages or the ones listed at the top are frozen and can not be opened intermittently. (Not more than anything) This is just annoying. You get a new text and can not open it. I found if I start a new text string (not reply) with that persons name it will then open the new message … so stupid.

The other is the way the voice call feature is hanging up now. It does not give the sound when waiting for a reply as before, and only randomly will actually call a number after it says it is calling.

The last issue is with Device Memory. Applications will not function or the phone will just freeze like a lame PC computer. Then it will say it is due to the Device Memory being full. After looking at the options/memory it will show for Device Memory TOTAL 879.2mb and FREE 829.7mb ?

I only have like 4 applications that I chose to download, and today it said the application memory was full and asked if I wanted to delete the following applications. Again, just like “new” PC’s that have really good processors but the current Microsoft OS has so much junk loaded in that it takes all of the memory and speed to run it, thus making all that useless.

I want to like this phone and it does have some great features when it works. But after seeing and using the I-Phones that my friends have it looks like a worthless little imitator of another kick butt Apple product. I would not have gotten this but Verizon does not have the I-phone and the coverage of Verizon is so much better than att that I had to stick with them … thus the Blackberry.

    I have the 9530 Storm.
