Research In Motion Announces BlackBerry Developer Conference

One big BlackBerry conference (WES) per year just doesn’t cut any longer for Research in Motion so they’ve decided to give all of the BlackBerry developers a conference of their own and have announced the new annual BlackBerry Developer Conference.

“Based on growing demand from the BlackBerry development community, we are very pleased to announce a new conference focused on developing consumer and business applications for the BlackBerry platform,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM. “The new annual BlackBerry Developer Conference in the fall will complement the successful Wireless Enterprise Symposium held each spring and will provide a dedicated forum to help developers keep pace with advances in the latest hardware, software, tools and best practices for developing on the BlackBerry platform.”

The BlackBerry Developer Conference will make its inaugural debut later this year the week of October 20th in Santa Clara, California.

BlackBerry Thunder: Touchscreen BlackBerry Coming To Verizon

We’ve known for some time that RIM is working on a touchscreen BlackBerry. We didn’t know that the device would be code named the BlackBerry Thunder and that it could be a lifetime exclusive to Verizon and Vodafone.

Lets let that sink in for a minute. Not only could the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder be coming to Verizon first in the U.S., it may only ever be offered by Verizon.

The BlackBerry Thunder will have a touch screen only. According to BGR, the first touchscreen BlackBerry will not have a slide out keyboard and only have 4 physical keys. Rumor also has it that the BlackBerry Thunder will by a hybrid device with CDMA EV-DO Rev. C and GSM HSPA for when you traveling internationally.

For clarification, Rev C., known as UMB is practically dead. If the device will indeed launch with a 4G solution, our bet is on LTE

I’ve been debating or not if I want to buy the new Verizon BlackBerry Curve. I don’t really need it, as my 8130 is working just fine. I believe that I will wait to here bit more about the BlackBerry Thunder. If this is really coming out next quarter, I think that I just might have to wait for it and forego the Curve.

BlackBerry Mobile Site Gets A New Look

So, it would appear that the BlackBerry Mobile site has gotten a free coat of paint. The new design is a bit more graphic intensive, but, still loads pretty fast. There is also a new free BlackBerry game in the Fun and Games >> Free Games section of the site.

Typing Tutor is kind of lame but it will allow you to waste time and is free. Outbreak Control, Black Jack, and Sudoku, are still on the site and are actually quite good. They are free BlackBerry games as well so if you haven’t downloaded them you may want to check out the site.

To visit the Mobile BlackBerry site just type mobile.blackberry.com into the BlackBerry Browser on your device.

Astraware Gets Into The BlackBerry Gaming Game

I just read a press release that brought back some fond memories from back in my Windows Mobile using days. Astraware, developer of some really cool games for Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, and even the PC, has announced that it is entering the BlackBerry gaming scene.

Astraware will first come out with Platypus sometime between the beginning of Q3 and August 31st shortly to be followed up by Astraware classics like Astraware Solitaire, Astraware Sudoku, Astraware Casino, and Astraware Boardgames in Q4. I personally own each of these along with about 40 more on a Windows Mobile device that I still use from time to time.
