iPhone SDK To Offer Enterprise Exchange Push: No Threat To BlackBerry… Yet

Apple answers the prayers of many an iPhone owner announcing that enterprise Microsoft Exchange “Push” technology is being added to the device via the iPhone SDK. That’s right fanboys and fangirls, you will soon be able to get your email, contacts, and calendar pushed directly from Exchange to your iPhone.

So, how does this news affect Research in Motion and the top position that the BlackBerry has in the enterprise today? Well, I don’t think it affects them any more than it did when Apple first released the iPhone back in June of last year. RIM had to have known that the next logical step for the iPhone was for it be able to get email directly from Exchange, and, quite honestly, I am kind of surprised that it didn’t day one when the thing shipped.

Surely some would be BlackBerry owners will opt instead for iPhones if they can get their “work” email on them. Let’s not, however, adorn the iPhone the next “BlackBerry Killer” just yet. At least wait until you can get an iPhone without a camera, with a physical keyboard, and on a network other than AT&T.

Dipdive Is Coming To The BlackBerry

Research in Motion co-CEO, Jim Balsillie, has been true to his word when he said that social networking was key to the BlackBerrys future. Facebook for BlackBerry is already a huge hit and, since making those statements, Linked In has revamped their mobile website which now is available on the BlackBerry with rumors of a Linked In BlackBerry client coming.

Research in Motion is also working with Dipdive, the online music service and social networking site started by Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am. According to the Globe and Mail, RIM plans to launch a Dipdive client in the next few months, however, that isn’t the only content provider that RIM is working with.

“There isn’t a content player that we’re not dealing with in a structured way right now,” Mr. Balsillie said “We kind of feel like Venice, everybody passes though on the way to where they’re going.”

I must say that I really like the tone of that quote from Balsillie. I think I and a lot of BlackBerry users would be happy with just a flash player and the ability to play YouTube videos. The fact that it sounds like RIM is working on much more than just that brings anticipation to what cool new things future BlackBerry devices will do.

Will BES 4.1 SP5 Have HTML Email Support?

Back when BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1 Service Pack 5 was announced HTML and Rich Text Support was listed right on the What’s New page for the upcoming release. It would appear, however, the this highly anticipated feature is no longer listed on the What’s New page.

Needless to say, a bunch of rumors and commentary have been spreading around as to whether BES 4.1 SP5 will or will not have HTML Email support. I don’t think anyone really knows for sure. I bet, however, that I know what a few companies that create third party applications that that give you this ability on your BlackBerry are hoping for.
