With the release of the BlackBerry Bold 9650 on Sprint and Verizon there has been quite a bit of debate as to whether or not this new line of Blackberries are indeed deserving of the title ‘Bold’ or just an upgraded Tour. We’ll break this phone down into two parts; software and hardware… [click to continue…]
As many of you know, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 went on sale yesterday on Verizon’s website and is supposed to be available in stores starting next Thursday, June 10th. Rumor has it, however, that some Verizon Stores have already to sell the devices that they have in stock.
One day before its launch, Verizon has finally officially announced the BlackBerry Bold 9650. It was not a secret at all that the Bold 9650 was coming to Verizon, however, Verizon usually acknowledges that a device exists more than 24 hours before they start selling it.
As we reported previously, the Verizon BlackBerry Bold will be available online starting tomorrow, June 3rd, and in brick and mortar stores one week later, June 10th. The device is priced at $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate on a 2 year contract. This is actually a pretty good price.
The BlackBerry Bold 9650 ships with BlackBerry OS 5, however, is one of the three devices upgradable to BlackBerry 6 whenever it is released. Let’s hope sooner rather than later…
It’s no secret that the BlackBerry Bold 9650 is coming to Verizon. The device has been available from Sprint for almost two weeks, yet, it hasn’t even been officially announced by Verizon. It isn’t unlike Verizon to take their time rolling out new devices, however, not even officially announcing the BlackBerry Bold 9650 when Sprint is already selling it without an exclusive is a bit of a departure from Verizon’s usual mode of operation. This kind of makes me wonder if Verizon is waiting on BlackBerry 6, the next generation BlackBerry OS, to become available so that they can release their branded Bold 9650 with the latest and greatest BlackBerry OS as compared to making users upgrade to it.
Training materials for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 are being disseminated to Verizon employees indicating that the launch of the new device draws near. One of the disappointing items with the Verizon Bold 9650 is that it comes with only a 2 GB micro SD card. The BlackBerry Storm2 came with a 16 Gb card. The Bold 9650 does, however, come with 500 Mb of application memory so application space shouldn’t be a problem. There still is no release date on the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9650, however, it is expected that it will be available sometime in the first half of June.
According to Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam, Research in Motion may be among the first manufacturers next year to offer a device on Verizon’s new Long Term Evolution (LTE) network that they are rolling out later this year.
Verizon released a video of their LTE in action at a Boston Pizza shop last week and the network saw download speeds of 8.55 Mbps. A BlackBerry with that kind of speed begs for streaming video, so, it will be interesting to see if the first LTE BlackBerry will have a full touchscreen like on the BlackBerry Storm or like the new BlackBerry 9800 Slider rumored to be coming out on AT&T in June.
It will still be a while before we start heading into Verizon Stores picking 4G LTE devices, however, this video showing the super fast wireless network in action at a Boston coffee pizza shop kind of gives a glimpse of what is around the corner.
