Recently Purchase A Phone On Verizon? Return It And Get $200 Towards The Purchase Of An iPhone

January 18, 2011 by Robb Dunewood 7 Comments

Verizon has announced a new program that, depending on when (between 11/26/2010 and 01/10/2011) and what type of phone that you may have recently purchased from them, could be a great way to get a $200 off the full retail purchase price of an iPhone 4, but, also could be a complete and utter rip off.

Here is the deal as outlined on Verizon’s FAQ page…

I just purchased a new smartphone during the holiday season, but if I knew that iPhone 4 was going to be available soon I would have waited. What are my options now?

Current Verizon customers who purchased and activated new smartphones, feature phones or certified pre-owned phones between 11/26/2010, and 01/10/2011, are eligible to receive up to a $200 Visa debit card when they purchase an iPhone 4 at full retail price by 02/28/2011 and return their existing phone. Note: This offer is only available on consumer accounts with five lines or less, who are purchasing iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless retail stores, telesales, or through verizonwireless.com.

Let me start off by stating that if you bought another phone on Verizon within the last 30-days, this deal is not for you.  You should return your device and just go back to using your old phone until the iPhone 4 comes out, then get it subsidized.  If you don’t have an old Verizon phone to go back to borrow one, or, even buy a cheap used one off someone just to hold you over for 3 weeks.

If you bought a smartphone on Verizon and want to swap it out for the iPhone, but, are beyond the 30-day return window, check to see if you can sell your device on ebay, to a friend, on Gazelle, etc. and see if you can’t get more than the $200 that Verizon is offering.  If you got a good phone and it is still in out of the box condition, you probably can do better than $200.

If you bought a feature phone, that was completely, or, almost completely subsidized and are beyond the 30-day window, this deal probably isn’t that bad.  Just remember that you are paying full retail less $200 on the iPhone 4.

It’s Official… iPhone 4 Head To Verizon Feb. 10th

January 11, 2011 by Robb Dunewood 16 Comments

Update:  We just heard via a Verizon spokesperson that the Verizon iPhone will not come in white…

This should come as no secret to those that read blogs about cell phones…  Verizon has officially announced the iPhone 4 and that it will be available starting Feb. 10th.  The Verizon iPhone 4 will come in both white and black, starts at $199.99 for the 16 GB model, and, unlike AT&T, will support Wi-Fi tethering.

A lot of Verizon BlackBerry users have been saying that they are going to switch to the iPhone as soon as it comes out.  Now that it is here are you sticking to your guns and making the move?

RIM Working On BlackBerry Devices With External Antennas?

August 16, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 2 Comments

Word on the street is that Research in Motion is working on new BlackBerry devices that will sport external antennas, you know, like the one that they iPhone 4 has, except, they will actually work.  You see, contrary to the the popular belief of those born after Regan left office, mobile phones with external antennas was not a new idea created by Apple.  Apple just did a piss poor job at implementing it.

In the picture above you see a BlackBerry 9100 with an external antenna, and, rumor has it that there are a bunch of new model designs sporting this design.  RIM, for years, has been known for superior antenna design, however, even if they weren’t you could bet your last dollar that any device with even a hint of the antenna issues that the iPhone 4 has would never see the light of day.

RIM Responds To Apple Over “Unacceptable” (read bogus) Reception Claims

July 18, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 9 Comments

If have you haven’t looked and any tech blogs, picked up a newspaper, or watched any news broadcast since last Thursday, you may not have known that Apple held a special press conference Friday to address reception issues that plague the iPhone 4.  Steve Jobs, for the most part, down played the issue kind of making it seem like it is more perception than reality (nothing shocking there), however, did address iPhone 4 owners concerns by basically giving all iPhone users a case.

Steve Jobs, however, didn’t stop there.  In a move that is pretty classless no matter how you look at it, he drug Research in Motion and Nokia into the conversation by, not only stating that handsets from both carriers suffer from the same type of problem plaguing the iPhone 4, but actually showing a video of a BlackBerry demonstrating the issue.  Needless to say, this did not sit well with RIM…

RIM Co-CEOs, in a joint response to Apple, had this to say:

What Will Apple Say In Their Press Conference Today?

July 16, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 5 Comments

I know that this is a BlackBerry site, but, Apple is holding a pretty important press conference today, presumably about the iPhone 4 antenna issues many users have been complaining about.

I am guessing that Apple will fall short of issuing an iPhone 4 recall, however, will probably offer some type of cheap bumper case that prohibits physical contact with the antenna.

Here are some of the thoughts of a few of my pals over on SMR and I would love to hear what you think Apple will say here in the comments.

Opinion: Android Devices With Good Phyiscal Keyboards Pose A Bigger Threat To The BlackBerry Than The iPhone Ever Has

July 6, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 23 Comments

I was having a conversation with a few friends recently all of whom know that I am really into smartphones, the BlackBerry in particular.  One of them had just gotten a new iPhone 4 and was trying to convince the rest of us, all BlackBerry users, that the iPhone 4 was going to crush the BlackBerry and put RIM out of business.  Being the smart Alec that I am I asked if he was using the term “crushed” loosely like when he said the iPhone would crush the BlackBerry, the iPhone 3G would crush the BlackBerry, and the iPhone 3Gs would crush the BlackBerry.

After my BlackBerry using friends and I stopped giving it to my iPhone buddy for being oblivious to reality when it comes to his iPhone fanboyism, one of them said that an Android device with a good keyboard would make them move off the BlackBerry a lot quicker than an iPhone ever would.  Everyone, myself included, agreed…

iPhone Manufacturer To Ship 24 Million iPhones In 2010

May 17, 2010 by Robb Dunewood Leave a Comment

According to a DigiTimes report, iPhone manufacturer, FoxxCon, is expected to ship 24 million iPhones in 2010.

Foxconn will ship 4.5 million units in the first half and 19.5 million units for the rest of 2010. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 4G on June 7, 2010 during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

Any way you look at it Apple is going to move a lot of product in this year starting in June and Apple should see substantial rise in their overall market share.  How much, however, will depend on how many existing iPhone users are upgrading as compared to net new iPhone users.
