BlackBerry Torch Virtual Keyboard upated in BlackBerry 7

It looks like the virtual keyboard on the BlackBerry Torch has been updated and it looks a lot more like the virtual keyboard found on the BlackBerry PlayBook.  There appears to be a bit more space between keys in the new layout which is a plus.  The big question for me, however, is if RIM will start to allow third party keyboards like Swype and SwiftKey?

BlackBerry Bridge on AT&T

Even if this was written in Hollywood no one would suspect AT&T BlackBerry users being blocked from using BlackBerry Bridge, yet here we are. People are already getting the download via other sources like in the CrackBerry post someone has put the download link on Dropbox.  I would rather get the download from a trusted source so you can download that at your own risk but this is a rather sad outcome on the launch day of their new flagship device. I don’t know who suffers more from a blunder like this RIM or AT&T.

BlackBerry PlayBook

I reverted back to carrying multiple smartphones just about this time last year.  One device has always been a BlackBerry (currently the original BlackBerry Storm).  The others have been the Palm Pre Plus, the Motorola Droid, the Droid Incredible (which I am currently using), and, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, which, believe it or not, I ended up returning.

The BlackBerry is great for messaging, but, very utilitarian

I don’t particularly want to carry two devices, but, the truth of the matter is that I have found nothing else that comes close to handling email and messaging as effectively as does the BlackBerry, and, with the exceptions of battery life and call quality, the BlackBerry handles “nothing else”as effectively as most every other smartphone platform of consequence.  My BlackBerry has become, essentially, what BlackBerry devices, for many, were 6 – 8 years ago…  An email device that you carried for work in addition to your personal cell phone.

For those of you not keeping a close eye on the date, the BlackBerry PlayBook launches on April 19th, exactly two weeks from today.  I know that the PlayBook won’t have native email client when the device ships, but, RIM is building one, and, I would be willing to bet that allowing the BlackBerry PlayBook to get email natively without a BlackBerry is a huge priority for RIM.  I would imagine that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be able to do email natively sooner rather than later.

PlayBook vs. BlackBerry

With all that being said, do you think that the BlackBerry PlayBook could effectively replace a BlackBerry smartphone?  Remember, I am already carrying two devices, and, really see doing so for the foreseeable future.  My BlackBerry is about as utilitarian a device as they come these days, as, I use it for messaging, listening to the occasional podcast, and, little more.  Assuming that the BlackBerry PlayBook will eventually be able to connect to BIS and BES without the need a BlackBerry phone to do so, could the PlayBook make the BlackBerry, not necessary at all…

By the by,
For those of you wondering if the PlayBook could effectively replace an Android phone, I’ll let you know in about two weeks…

Research in Motion is putting out a lot of these videos showcasing all kinds of folks using BlackBerry devices in their daily lives. This one, titled “Making it Happen with BlackBerry”, features New York recording artist Maluca. You may remember her from a shorter BlackBerry commercial like video from the other day…

Post image for BlackBerry Was The Best Selling Smartphone In The UK Last Year!

We keep hearing how the the BlackBerry is getting trounced here in the U.S. by competitors like the iPhone and Android, however, we often forget that Research in Motion, the company that makes BlackBerry devices is a global company.  According to data from GfK, the BlackBerry was the best selling smartphone in the UK…

Using data exclusively from consumers sales channels (ie the networks and consumer electronics stores), the research concluded that not only did BlackBerry handsets command 28.2% of all smartphone sales in 2010, RIM also managed to gain 36% of the Christmas sales, with over 500,000 shifted.

BlackBerry Torch 2

As many regular RIMarkable readers know, one of the primary reasons that I returned my BlackBerry Torch after getting it last year was because the device just seemed underpowered by current standards.  Earlier today BlackBerry Torch 2 specifications leaked out, and, one adjective that probably won’t be used when describing Research in Motion’s second stab at a a vertical slider which sports a 1.2 Ghz processor is underpowered.

BlackBerry Torch 2 specs include:

  • 1.2GHz processor
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • Tri-band HSPA 14.4Mbps
  • 3.2-inch VGA 640 x 480 capacitive display
  • 8GB built-in memory
  • 512MB RAM
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • GPS
  • NFC
  • 5MP camera with flash
  • Magnetometer
  • 1300 mAh battery
  • BlackBerry OS 6.1
  • OpenGL ES
  • 14.6mm thin
