Someone please explain subscription based Ringtone downloads

So I am browsing through Handango as I often do and I come across an ad for Ringphonic by HDM which is a subscription based ringtone download service for the BlackBerry 71xx series devices. I glance over the Ringphonic page on Handango and I say to myself, “That’s not too bad. 8 ringtones for 9 or 10 bucks.” Then look a little closer and I see that it is 9 or 10 bucks per month for you to be able to download 8 ringtones a month.

Now, I am not knocking Ringphonic because this is one of the more popular BlackBerry downloads at over 38,000 and the user rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Just cannot for the life of my figure out why I would need a subscription for such a service. Are ringtone downloads for BlackBerry 71xx series devices in such demand that people are willing to sign up a monthly subscription to get them?

Eight ringtones a month indefinable seems a bit much to me. I am absolutely missing the point so I hope that someone can explain this one to me.

Well, the same or similar service is on the new Razr my wife got from Sprint. To me, it seems absolutely retarded.

I was thought the same thing and agree! Doesn’t make any sense to me. Looks like another scam.
