RIM Launches Facebook For BlackBerry

by Robb Dunewood on October 24, 2007 · 23 comments

Research in Motion has just announced that they have launched Facebook For BlackBerry. The application which will first appear on T-Mobile will allow BlackBerry users to wirelessly send and receive messages, photos, pokes, and Wall posts and the really cool thing is that Facebook for BlackBerry is not just a browser application, but, leverages the BlackBerry’s push-based architecture to deliver information to your device.

Facebook is one of the fastest growing web destinations among BlackBerry smartphone users and it has become an important element in the evolving fabric of personal communications,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “Facebook and RIM share a vision for enhanced mobile communications and social networking based on open, standards-based platforms and this has allowed us to produce a rich mobile application for Facebook users that leverages the push-based architecture, multimedia features and industry-leading usability of the BlackBerry solution.

Facebook for BlackBerry will be available as a free BlackBerry download and will be available later today at www.facebook.com.

How long do you think that it will be before this is available on AT&T?

I hate to admit it, but I am addicted to Facebook. I’ve already written 3 applications and am working on a 4th.

Too bad to download the file from blackberry you need a desktop pc. Why can’t they release it OTA?

I went to m.facebook.com on my blackberry with AT&T and didn’t see a download link.

Awesome idea. As a college student, I already know so many people who use Facebook Mobile to update their status, get friends’ numbers on the fly, etc. I can’t even imagine where 3rd party apps on mobile will take the SNS. And the uploading profile pics via mobile idea…priceless.

Well I went to m.facebook.com and downloaded it to my 8320. Really easy to install. It is nice, but only good to see your friends’ status updates. You can’t see your profile nor theirs. Kind of misses the point if you ask me.

BTW GoogleTalk 2.0 for Blackberry is also out today. It is a nice improvement. More exciting news then the release of Facebook for BB.

Does it work for someone who is not on T-mobile?

Not OTA but here’s the download link if you can install using IE on Windows:

I’m on my 8300 for AT&T and it works fine. Forget m.facebook – just type in http://www.facebook.com and it’ll ask u if u want to download it OTA. Pretty cool app

Whenever I visit any of the myriad of ways to download the application with the medianet browser on my 8800 with AT&T it takes me to a page that my desktop browser would which needs any activex plugin to install. Is this any 8800 issue?

This app is somewhat inconvenient to apply, requiring the need for THIS computer to have the BB-associated programs installed, then allowing it to integrate with the ActiveX of this page in order to upload into your Smartphone…
Basically, you are given NO control – as opposed to simply being granted the opportunity to save a file to your Desktop.. RIM: can you fix this, please?
