Latest Leaked BlackBerry Storm OS Appears To Be A Keeper

by Robb Dunewood on February 13, 2009 · 29 comments

BlackBerry Storm OS 4.7.0.103Up until a couple of weeks ago, I posted a link to every leaked BlackBerry Storm OS that hit the web.  To be completely honest, I never really noticed that much difference from one leaked version to next since about version 4.7.0.90 with the exception of the full QWERTY keboard a couple of versions ago.

I admit, however, that 4.7.0.103 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 seems to have noticeably improved my overall user experience.  The OS just seems a bit snappier and more response.  I’ve had no lock-ups or application hangs since installing .103.  I haven’t experienced any random reboots that I’ve noticed and overall boot up time seems to be a lot quicker than before.

I haven’t done any type of scientifc comparison of .103 to any previous leaked OSs and my observations are just my own opinion so I will just say that if you are comfortable with upgrading your BlackBerry Storm with a unofficially leaked OS and you are wondering if BlackBerry Storm OS 4.7.0.103 is worth the 20 to 30 minutes it will take you to install, it has definitely been worth it for me.

You can download 4.7.0.103 here

I’ve had it installed since yesterday. I haven’t had to pull the battery yet so I guess that is a good thing.

Thanks for the review. I’m still on .85 on my storm but I’m in the middle of downloading .103 right now.

I have had consistent battery pulls since updating it on Wednesday…which made me sad because I was hoping this would be the one as well. Can’t wait for the official O/S release so that I don’t have to take my battery out constantly.

Usually hangs/crashes when I get an IM and/or lock my screen. :(

On another note – I really hope that RIM can speed up the lock/unlock so that it is more inline with other devices. Waiting even 2 seconds is annoying when you want to remove your phone from the holster and just make a call.

I just installed it. I hope it cuts down on the battery pulls. It did seem to reboot a little faster.

That was one of my main gripes that led me to return the Storm: random reboots. I agree with Tom: It would sometimes crash while text messaging. It was a drag because it would do a “hard reboot” and take a while to come back up.

If nothing else, RIM will probably learn a lot from this release. The next Storm, or similar Blackberry, will hopefully be a better device. There is only going to be so much that RIM can do with the software on the Storm. Some of the lag is going to be the processor and they aren’t going to be able to remedy that with software.

.103 is working really well for me. i have run every beta and have only done wipe (after installing .90) and .103 is by far the best. it has yet to hang on me and no errors.

I have this version of the OS and i love it!

I have never had to battery pull, even with all of the other versions.

I’m really excited about this update, I’m downloading now. I’m currently on .90 and notice the random reboots. While at my desk the phone will reboot… without touching a thing. Some days this happened 3-4 times! I love .90 but pray this .103 will be the answer! Thank you!!

Does anyone know how to upgrade to .103 with a mac computer? I have an old powerbook so using Windows with Apple is not an option.

Sorry Jon,

It cannot be done without Windows.

“It cannot be done without Windows.”

The age old crutch that RIM could have solved, should have solved by now. The BB isn’t all that much of a smartphone to some when all it natively syncs with relies on windozs. A native, universal desktop app from RIM is well past due.

Rock…. I have a Mac running vmware (with xp) installed 103- only issue was weatherbug updates would reboot phone (so I uninstalled weatherbug) using viigo not as nice, but eh…. anyway the only other issue is during the restore process it fails to restore apps and info. Luckily I backed up with missing sync 1st.

JustReBoot,

Thanks for the work around, however not interested in continuing to find/use the many workarounds. Don’t think it’s too much to expect RIM to provide native desktop app’s for more than just the windoz OS, which I’d rather not soil my mac with.

I’ve OS hopped since I’ve had my storm, going from one bad leak to another. When I finally, and happily downloaded .99, I think I may have found the best thus far. What compelling reason should I have to go to .103 if .99 has been stellar for me?

i’ve updated my storm with every beta ever released. and so far this is the best by far…even compared to the .99.

The camera is much better now and everything just works quicker and better. the color issue is the only thing missing. and i think some bbs are just made to reset and act all funky bc i’ve never really had any major issues with any of the os’…and now i just do a battery pull whenever like a couple times a day just to have that fresh bb feeling.

Installed it and my battery went from full charge to dead within 7 hours. Had to revert back to .99 os to get more battery life. The phone was in the holster all day and drained. Not ready yet I guess

x2

These un-official leaks are not a secure, smart, path forward. They could invite possible problems, which RIM would be completely in the right for choosing to do nothing about to solve. Nor should RIM be judged on any non-official, leaked OS.

Hi all, I got the storm on day one and i’m considering going to the mania because this is my youth storm including the first one. I downloaded update .90 and .103 but for some reason it will not show up in the desktop update. If someone could tell me what I am doing wrong so I can experience some better response. If .103 make this device more responsive my thoughts about the omnia is out the door. Thanks in advance. Gregg

I understand that NO Storm OS release has included Stereo Blue Tooth connectivity with the Media / Video player. Is this true for .103?

Thanks!

.75 worked for me on the stereo bluetooth but .99 doesn’t. I’m curious is .103 has resolved this issue as well…anybody know?

I had to go back to the original release of OS .75 battery pulls were just too many.
