Update: Google Talk for BlackBerry

So, I finally had some free time to play around with Google Talk for BlackBerry and I even though I only have about of 30 minutes in the app, I am going to go ahead right now and say that it is the best free Instant Messaging application out for the BlackBerry.

To make a long story short Google Talk for BlackBerry works and it is fast. It doesn’t seem like it takes messages anymore than a second to send or receive from the BlackBerry or the desktop running the Google Talk client. I won’t say that it is instantaneous, but at least for me on my BlackBerry 7130e, it is darn near close.

It looks like Research in Motion and Google have released Google Talk for BlackBerry and it can be downloaded here. Google Talk runs on all 7100, 7200, 7500, 7700, and 8700 series BlackBerry devices running BlackBerry OS v4.00 or higher.

I will download and install Google Talk for BlackBerry first thing in the morning so be sure to check back later as I will put up my first impressions.

Thanks for the heads up! I have it running now… Great to have now that my wife uses Gmail - she can ping me on the road now!

You can go to http://www.blackberry.com/GoogleTalk/ on the device to download OTA.

Very slick app. Seems to work very smoothly. Actually seems to work better than Ramble. Hat tip to Chris for letting me know it was available.

Yes, this is undoubtedly a very slick application. I spent some time with it today and did a writeup at BlackBerry Today. Very impressive application.

Any idea if this uses internet airtime or a text message per IM? Tmobile apparently charges per IM (as a text message) each time you message, so I’m trying to figure out which apps (if any) I could use that route messages over the internet instead (since I have unlimited bandwidth).

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Dave.

Same as Dave. It would be very useful to know if per IM is charged. Does anyone have a list of apps- those that are charged and those that are not (for some of us on “unlimited”).

I just got off the phone with Cingular about this. They gave me a definitive “we don’t know”. They said they would look into it and call me back after my billing cycle ends. I’m going to hold my breath now.

Google Talk is apparrently incompatible with the Bold 9000 from ATT. I get the following message
Sorry, your device does not meet the system requirements that are needed to support Google Talk.
