What’s the practical difference between SIM unlocked and SIM locked? I’m on Verizon and am thinking of getting the 8830 from them when it goes on sale in May.

The difference is that when you roam internationally, you can use any provider you want, possibly saving you a lot of money. Verizon, being owned partially by Vodafone, wants you to only use a Vodafone sim, giving you less options.

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. Typical Verizon.

I would imagine that some vendors will offer unlock codes for the VZW version for a relatively small fee, like they do with virtually all other GSM phones.

I applaud Sprint for going the unlocked route…however, they almost have to try something, because they are bleeding customers and are really losing out in the marketplace right now. There is no way right now I would trust Sprint with my cell service.

Does anyone think Sprint will still bring the Pearl as previously suggested?

So does this mean the 8830 does have PTT capability? It seems like I am getting conflicting answers. We are required to have the PTT feature for emergency response, but I would like to update the features of my 7520. Any thoughts? What other PDA is available for sprint/nextel with PTT?

i bought the 8830 world phone from sprint and i was told that t would work in canada with any sim card but when i got to canada and tried it using Fido and rogers sim cards it didn’t work. i was ripped off and was told told by fido and rogers that the 8830 will not work in canada unless if you use only a sprint sim card .

diddo. Same thing happened to me. I only tried Rogers. Why is this? No, its not just the band. Rogers uses 1900, and the 8830 support 1900. So why is it not working? Anyone know of a hack? When I do a scan of networks i find nothing.

The 8830, as listed on the BlackBerry website, only does 900/1800 GSM/GPRS service. Canada uses 1900MHz GSM, just like the USA, but the CDMA portion of the phone should still work up there, there is still a decent amount of CDMA in the larger towns and cities.

I wouldn’t mind getting a Blackberry 8830 World Edition but the phone I have now doesn’t even work. See, I’m with Telus and I have a Samsung a720. It’s got a few bells and whistles but when I go to use them, say for example to send a picture/recorded audio clip or video clip text message it seems to work quite rarely. Most of the time I can’t connect to the internet and the phone freezes and I have to pull the battery out because it won’t get out of the trying to disconnect mode. So I definately won’t be shelling out $500 for more features that won’t work. A phone is only as good as the network and mine has really let me down.
