Touch BlackBerry Bold 9900 wins FCC approval – Should be coming soon…

July 12, 2011 by Robb Dunewood Leave a Comment

One of the last hurdles new mobile devices have jump over before going on sale in the United States is getting FCC approval.  The new touch BlackBerry Bold 9900 has just won FCC approval, so, it shouldn’t be too long before that device goes on sale.  The touch Bold 9900 still needs to meet carrier acceptance, however, there is no regulatory reason why devices couldn’t be sold right now.

Research in Motion has already said that they are going to miss the back to school shopping season with the new touch BlackBerry Bold, so, I still don’t expect to see the device until the August/September time frame.

What Does Research In Motion Have In Store For Us When It Comes To New BlackBerry Devices?

December 9, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 2 Comments

I am trying to remember the last time that there really weren’t any rumors about the “next” BlackBerry that would be coming out.  There is no question that all the talk at Research in Motion these days is about the BlackBerry PlayBook and QNX, but, I would like to know what RIM has in store for the next BlackBerry.

The BlackBerry that I currently use, really as a secondary device these days, is the BlackBerry Storm 9530.  My Storm is well over two years old and my two, unappealing, choices for upgrade are the Storm2 9550 which is over a year old and cannot be upgraded to BlackBerry 6, and, the 6 month old BlackBerry Bold 9650 which you will be able to upgrade to BlackBerry 6 any day now.

Usually during this time of year there would be a lot of buzz about the new BlackBerry devices that just came out and even more about the devices rumored to be coming out next year.  Unfortunately, the “new” BlackBerry devices that just came out are refreshes of BlackBerry Bold, Curve, and Pearl, devices that came out years ago, and a weird looking clamshell that I have yet to see in the wild outside of stores that sell them.  The rumor mill is completely closed down.  We aren’t even hearing rumors about a CDMA variant of the BlackBerry Torch.

I know that RIM is focusing on the BlackBerry PlayBook right now, but, what do they have in store for us when it comes to BlackBerry devices?  Inquiring minds would like to know…

Why Are There Plans For A BlackBerry Curve 8980?

November 30, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 7 Comments

Could someone please explain to me for what possible reason Research in Motion has submitted plans for the BlackBerry Curve 8980, yet another underpowered, BlackBerry OS 5 running, looks like every other Curve looking, BlackBerry Curve?  I cannot for the life of me figure this out….  I know that the BlackBerry Curve line is the best selling line of BlackBerry devices ever, but, how many times is RIM going to reincarnate this puppy?

For those not sure what I am ranting about, the FCC has released documents and photos detailing a new, unannounced, BlackBerry device, the Curve 8980, which has quad-band GSM/EDGE radios in addition to Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.  The BlackBerry Curve 8980 also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, optical trackpad, and 3.5mm headset jack and will ship with BlackBerry OS 5.
