Which BlackBerry Will You Choose?

August 29, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 30 Comments

About a week and a half ago we posted about all the BlackBerry advertising that we are being bombarded with lately. The marketing campaign doesn’t see to be slowing as I’ve seen one of those “Which One Will You Choose” adds at least a dozen times on a dozen different sites this morning.

I guess that this is as good a time as any to ask the 16 or so RIMarkable regular readers which BlackBerry you would, or did, choose?

Drop us a comment and let us know which of the trackball bearing BlackBerries you are using or would like to use and why.

Pearl. I like it because its not big and clunky. Fits easily in my pocket when I want to be seen in public not looking like a nerd with my hoster, which is anytime I am not at the office. I am also sort of a fan of SureType; the less keys the better. Can’t wait for the Pearl 2!!

Curve, as soon as it comes to Sprint. Right now my 8830 will do.

Pearl was the BB for me. Fits in my pocket. It’s reliable. And it’s a BlackBerry!

When it comes to VZ … the Pearl 2. I want a phone that looks like a phone and not a waffle, but has the capacity to let me get my e-mail from work and home and keep my calendar updated. Everything on top of that is gravy.

    Hmmm….

It is hard to say at this time. There are alot of devices that are coming out over the horizon.

I have used the 7100 and 8100 for 2+ years… After getting a free 8800 from Rim, I can’t go back to them.

I need a qwerty with gps and wifi with the form factor of the curve. The camera i don’t really need but would be nice.

If i can get a curve with gps, wifi i am sold.

I chose the pearl..mainly for the size. Not a fan of the larger phones.

I went with the Pearl. Probably would have went with the Curve if it was available at the time.

For the devices available right now, I absolutely love my co-worker’s Curve. I use my 8703e for business but it’s my phone so I’d like to enjoy many of the other features (camera, media player, etc). The “normal” size headphone jack and camera on the Curve and upcoming Pearl 2 really set them apart from my device and the 8800s, in my opinion. At that point, it’s just personal preference based on size vs keyboard. I prefer the Qwerty keyboard.

I’m a Verizon user and not really looking to change (most of my friends are also users of Verizon and I really like their infrastructure), so I’m stuck waiting for the Curve to come to my network. I’d be happy with the current 8300 model to come out on Verizon, but would really love one with WiFi as well, as has been rumored to be coming out on GSM networks.

pearl 2 all the way! nothing beats great coverage coupled with a slim form and call comfort. Full QWERTY is convenient, but i’m on the phone more than i type out messages. Also the 3.5 mm jack is totally a selling point. Why put music on your phone if you can’t use a decent pair of headphones?

I own the blackberry 8800. I absolutely adore it! I love how and black my blackbery is. I used to own the sidekick 3, then decided to switch over to the Blackberry. I find the blackberry to be classy all around. And there was not one day where I didn’t get a compliment or stare about my phone.

I’m on Verizon and yet to own a Blackberry. I’m month to month now and holding out for the Pearl 2. I need to be able to browse and restart servers, stuff like that.

Let me please ask…. which is the best option for surfing the net? I’m a web developer… but I also take my kids a lot of places…. need to be able to check in, log in, edit, stuff like that. Is the Pearl (2)’s screen big enough to view web pages?

I’d get a Curve when VZ gets them. I use my BB for messaging a lot more than as a phone. And the Curve appeals to me more than the 8800.

I thought at least a few people would say they want an 88xx. The Curve and the Pearl are running away with it thus far.

Iam a verizon phone user and needed a BB for work email access.

I went with the Curve on ATT. Love the Curve – the keyboard, camera, size and weight are great. But I wish the web browsing was faster.

The home run device for me now would be a Curve with WiFi running on Verizon’s data network. I could live without GPS to maintain the Curve form factor and consolidate to just one device.

I’ve had the 7100, now using the 8100 ever since it’s release with T-Mobile. I love my pearl, However It really upsets me that tmobile isn’t the 1st to get the berries after the pearl’s release. I want the Curve but I’m not willing to switch carriers to get it. I would love to have the Curve in my pearl’s place because the curve is still small and has a full keyboard and wifi. I’m waiting on it’s release to T-Mobile, the greatest carrier there ever was…lol…then I’ll be complete. T-Mobile should get all New BlackBerries first!

I chose the Pearl months ago. I had been avoiding convergence devices for some time because there was always some drawback that made them not quite appealing to me: form factor, speed, battery life, available applications. The Pearl was the first one in a compact form that could take the place of my phone, PDA and mp3 player, had good battery life, was the candy bar form factor I liked, and excellent battery life.

If I did not have one right now, I would go for the Pearl 2. While there are some major improvements, they are not compelling enough for me to get a new phone so soon after my last one. Fortunately, the OS improvements will be available in October, so I don’t feel cheated. I’ve had it for 6 months now, and still use it for all of the tasks I had originally envisioned. The only thing I miss is not having a full qwerty keyboard, but that is offset by the fact that it then becomes a device with a form factor I don’t like, especially as a phone.

I use the 8830 on VZW for my business line , and a Curve on at&t for my personal line. Both are great devices! however, if I had to choose one I’d probably roll with the 8830. It’s just a little more solid to me then the Curve, and the camera is just a non event. Give me a Curve with 3G and a 3 mega pix shooter and I’d change my mind in a heart beat, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon!

I went with the Pearl 1 year ago and will continue to do so. It addresses all of my needs; form factor, keyboard (suretype vs. Full), email, browser, and ease of use (OS). While I use T-Mobile (ugh), it’s stood up to the task of extremely heavy usage and decent reception. Not sure if Pearl 2 is a warranted excuse to upgrade, but I’ve gone a year without buying another. I may spoil myself and get the Pearl 2 when available.

PS – I read and typed this from my Pearl! Just love it.

I knew nothing about Blackberrys when I bought my Pearl. I had originally purchased the HTC Wing but angrily returned it a few days later (it was horrible). I desperately needed a “practical” smartphone to fill the void so I bypassed the Sidekick and bought the Pearl. It was only later that I realized how perfect it was for me.

At first I was tempted to pick up the Curve since my boyfriend has one. But now I realize that the Pearl is more my style. Plus, keeping it leaves me free to wait around for the alleged 9100 that’s due out some time next year.

Unless the rumors are true and T-Mobile is coming out with a BLACK Curve. Then all bets are off.

I chose the 8830 from Verizon. It’s the best Verizon has to offer, so it’s what I went with… for now. Downsides are that it has several software issues, including going into conference mode when sending/receiving a call at the same time, requiring a soft reset to be able to send calls again. Also, there’s no camera as it’s more of a “business device” (as if business people don’t want a camera). I’ll stick it out with Verizon for now, but I’m reeeally tempted to switch to AT&T for the Curve, and any other of the 10 phones they’ll come out with before Verizon does. A second generation Curve or iPhone will probably be enough for me to divorce Verizon after 6 years.

I currently have the BB Pearl on T-mobile, and may switch to the Curve, eventually. We’ll see if Tmo gets the wi-fi enabled one too.
