VoiceControl brings voice command dialing to BlackBerry

November 4, 2005 by Robb Dunewood 11 Comments

One feature that is annoyingly missing from BlackBerry handheld devices is voice command dialing. With VoiceControl from Mobile Application Development, this annoyance is no more, at least on the BlackBerry 7100i and 7520 from Nextel.

VoiceControlTM lets you make phone calls, set appointments, dictate short emails and view web pages on your BlackBerry using your voice instead of typing. VoiceControlTM makes it easier, safer and more convenient than ever to use all of your BlackBerry’s functionality.

One feature is enough to sell me on VoiceControl and that is voice command dialing. I have well over 300 contacts in my address book and being able to hit a button and say call “whomever” is a beautiful thing.

    Darrel,

I see where you are coming from on some points but I have to disagree with you on the 7100i’s phone capabilities. Don’t get me wrong, I think that the BlackBerry is OK as a phone, but if you’ve had 6 mobile phones that weren’t as good as the 7100i from a phone standpoint, all I can say is that you have been incredibly unlucky when it comes to picking out good mobile phones.

Let me just name a few of the 7100is shortcomings as a mobile phone:
    Poor audio quality
No free voice dial (you could buy Voice Control since this is a Nextel BlackBerry, however, this should be built-in)
    Only 10 speed dial numbers
    No photo caller ID
    Cannot see the screen outdoors
This list could definately go on. BlackBerries have a long way to go before I would call them great mobile phones…

Does voice control work well on my BB 8700c.

I am looking at primarily using it for voice activated dialing.

Can I “dictate” an email and it will send it?

Is this the software that BBerry would recommend as their first choice for vadialing?

Unfortunately, it does not. This would be a welcome additiona to all BlackBerries in my opinion.

The link to Voice Control returns ‘Page cannot be found’. Is this software real? Will it work on my BB 7105t I use with T-Mobile service?

    Thanx!
    Jim

The link is fixed and VoiceControl only works on Nextel BlackBerries.

Is there a reason why the “Press and Hold” button on top of the 7520 won’t work for prompting VoiceControl while the Blackberry unit is in the holster? Thanks.

    Robb:
As of March 24 2007 do you have any further info on the Voice Control for the most recent BB models–especially the 8800?
    Thanks,
    D.

Both the BlackBerry Pearl and 8800 have Voice Activated Dialing (VAD).

Was there something specific that you are looking for?

    dear sirs,
will adding voice command make it so you can voice dial from a bluetooth headset? in other words…..with the bluetooth on, not have to touch the phone to dial a contact.
