Hi everyone, could someone advise me on CDMA vs GSM coverage in the states (particularly in Southern California)? (When you mention the providers, I don't know which is which.) I am American, but currently living in Canada, and have been on CDMA forever. I am thinking about switching to GSM, but I am concerned about coverage when I am visiting my family in SoCal. The CDMA carrier here has introduced a Blackberry world phone that has both, so I'm thinking that maybe I should just go with that...
thanks!

Flame away... but it's going to take a lot more than what you're mentioning for me to leave the speed of EVDO, soon to arrive Rev A, and just around the corner wimax. GSM's "new" technology is running at speeds I had on Sprint & VZ two years ago (and it's still not available in remotely as many locations as EVDO).

hellno --

rah, rah, rah! go, go, go! GSM! GSM! GSM! Can you be any more of a cheerleader?

You didn't read the specs of the Pearl 2 if you think the CDMA version will be nothing more than the Pearl 1. There are other improvements beyond just the GSM (frankly, I don't care if it's disabled - I don't drive b/c I live in NYC and I [most of the time] know how to get to where I want to go). Just having easier access to an expansion card slot is enough of an upgrade to justify the improvement.

Plus, and there is nothing you can say that will dissuade me of this, VZ's network is better that ATT. EDGE just isn't as fast. ATT drops more calls. VZ has generally a better all around service. Case in point: Two nights ago I was in the basement of my apartment building. My neighbor, who was with me and has ATT, had no reception. I had three bars and could make perfect calls.

So, if the Pearl is coming to VZ and you actually care about having a phone that you can make calls with and can receive data quickly, then the fact that VZ is getting the Pearl is a god-send.

Ned right you are, but the GSM Pearl 2 which will be out before the "planned" cdma Pearl 2. Also the Pearl 2 for GSM will have WiFi the cdma Pearl 2 will have GPS which will be crippled before any "VZ" customers are allowed to touch them. So The "planned" cdma Pearl will be nothing more than the Pearl 1 which has been available on GSM for almost 2 years now.

Again BB fans if you want a state of the art RIM BB, upgrade to the Global System for Mobile communication. GSM

Hold tight and don't switch away from VZ just yet. BGR has what appears to be a confirmed report that VZ will be getting a Pearl.

AT&T sucks terribly in Cleveland as well. All of the people I know that have it, love it, even though they never have reception and drop calls all of the time. It is like they are under some sort of spell! I almost cracked and switched for a Curve...but I held it together and ordered an 8800 to hold me over until T-Mobile releases their Curve. I think the 8800 looks better than the Curve though.

I'd love to drop Verizon and go to T-Mobile, but I live in Southern California and T-Mobile coverage is really bad. My brother has two phones. A VZW phone (from my family plan) and a T-Mobile phone. When I call him from a land phone I call him on his T-Mobile phone. Calls to him on that phone sound terrible because the call is always fading in and out (or just drops). No such problem on the Verizon phone.

I am ONLY with VZW for their network. I'd love to switch to another carrier, but I need good coverage/call clarity.

My life has completely changed after i left verizon for tmobile. NO more stress over the bills, no more bullshit phones that are locked. I say they can take their network and shove it. T-mobile is more then suitable for what i need.
