Telstra BlackBerry Bold To Be FREE

What is the best way to compete with a $199 iPhone 3G? Completely subsidize the price of your device with a qualifying data plan. This is exactly what Australia based Telstra is doing with the BlackBerry Bold.

Telstra will offer the BlackBerry Bold for 0$ with a qualifying plan to business customers sometime in late September. Complete details aren’t yet available, however, a Telstra spokesperson said that data and pricing plans will be revealed in a few days.

My guess is that AT&T would never do this because it would eat in to their iPhone sales which I believe is paramount for them, they being the flagship carrier and all.

I think that a lot of Apple fans that think that the Phone 3G is going to be a BlackBerry killer will find that AT&T will sell a lot of BlackBerry Bold’s if they price is even $199. If it were completlely subsidized, you might find people walking into AT&T stores to look at the iPhone but walking out with a BlackBerry Bold.
