BlackBerry 6

If you are a Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9650 or Curve 3G 9330 user that hasn’t already installed a leaked version of BlackBerry 6 for your device, your wait for the latest and greatest BlackBerry OS is now over.  Verizon has officially released BlackBerry 6.

You can download and install BlackBerry 6 on your Verizon Bold 9650 or Curve 3G by heading over to www.BlackBerry.com/updates and connection your device to your computer via USB.  You can also download the update OTA (over the air) by going to Options>Advanced Options>Wireless Update directly from your device.

You can get more information about BlackBerry 6 updates for both devices from the following Verizon Wireless links:

AT&T BlackBerry PlayBook

We knew that a Wi-Fi only BlackBerry PlayBook is launching sometime in Q1 and that a 4G PlayBook will hit Sprint this summer.  What we didn’t know, however, is that there are credible rumors that a 3G BlackBerry PlayBook will hit AT&T early this Spring possibly followed shortly thereafter by an LTE variant.  CIO’s Al Sacco has a high-level BlackBerry administrator that works closely with Research in Motion as a source and has this to say…

My source says RIM is on track with its Q1 2011 release for the Wi-Fi only PlayBook, with business orders expected to commence in February for March shipping. And the source says a document from one of RIM’s carrier representatives who works with AT&T suggests that a 3G cellular version of the BlackBerry PlayBook, on AT&T, is expected to become available starting in late March or early April…

So many questions come to mind, but, the first one is that if an LTE variant of the BlackBerry PlayBook is coming relatively soon after the 3G version on AT&T, would it be branded to Verizon?  There is no question that I still want to get a PlayBook as soon as it comes out, however, a 4G variant on Verizon might be enough to make me wait…

Verizon iPhone

Verizon has announced a new program that, depending on when (between 11/26/2010 and 01/10/2011) and what type of phone that you may have recently purchased from them, could be a great way to get a $200 off the full retail purchase price of an iPhone 4, but, also could be a complete and utter rip off.

Here is the deal as outlined on Verizon’s FAQ page…

I just purchased a new smartphone during the holiday season, but if I knew that iPhone 4 was going to be available soon I would have waited. What are my options now?

Current Verizon customers who purchased and activated new smartphones, feature phones or certified pre-owned phones between 11/26/2010, and 01/10/2011, are eligible to receive up to a $200 Visa debit card when they purchase an iPhone 4 at full retail price by 02/28/2011 and return their existing phone. Note: This offer is only available on consumer accounts with five lines or less, who are purchasing iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless retail stores, telesales, or through verizonwireless.com.

Let me start off by stating that if you bought another phone on Verizon within the last 30-days, this deal is not for you.  You should return your device and just go back to using your old phone until the iPhone 4 comes out, then get it subsidized.  If you don’t have an old Verizon phone to go back to borrow one, or, even buy a cheap used one off someone just to hold you over for 3 weeks.

If you bought a smartphone on Verizon and want to swap it out for the iPhone, but, are beyond the 30-day return window, check to see if you can sell your device on ebay, to a friend, on Gazelle, etc. and see if you can’t get more than the $200 that Verizon is offering.  If you got a good phone and it is still in out of the box condition, you probably can do better than $200.

If you bought a feature phone, that was completely, or, almost completely subsidized and are beyond the 30-day window, this deal probably isn’t that bad.  Just remember that you are paying full retail less $200 on the iPhone 4.

CDMA BlackBerry Torch

I know that all the news over on Verizon right now is about the iPhone 4 which will be hitting their network on Feb. 1oth, but, contrary to popular belief, most Verizon BlackBerry users won’t be switching over to iPhone (although quite a few might).   It has been a while since a high end CDMA BlackBerry device hit Verizon shelves and there a lot of BlackBerry Storm, Tour, Storm2, and even Bold 9650 users that are looking to move on to a higher end BlackBerry device.

It usually takes about 6 months or so before a CDMA variant of a device comes out after its GSM counterpart which means we should see a BlackBerry Torch ready for Sprint and Verizon sometime around the middle of next month.  Let’s hope that, like with the BlackBerry Bold 9650 over the Bold 9700, the CDMA BlackBerry Torch has a little more under the hood.  Just being on AT&T was enough to make me return my BlackBerry Torch, but, I wasn’t terribly impressed with the hardware either as the device just seemed under powered.

Both Verizon and Sprint are long over due for a higher end BlackBerry, and even though the Torch was a little less than expected when initially released, I’d  gladly use it seeing how I am one of those corporate BlackBerry users that will be on the BlackBerry platform for the foreseeable future…

Post image for It’s Official… iPhone 4 Head To Verizon Feb. 10th

Update:  We just heard via a Verizon spokesperson that the Verizon iPhone will not come in white…

This should come as no secret to those that read blogs about cell phones…  Verizon has officially announced the iPhone 4 and that it will be available starting Feb. 10th.  The Verizon iPhone 4 will come in both white and black, starts at $199.99 for the 16 GB model, and, unlike AT&T, will support Wi-Fi tethering.

A lot of Verizon BlackBerry users have been saying that they are going to switch to the iPhone as soon as it comes out.  Now that it is here are you sticking to your guns and making the move?

CES

For those of you not aware, CES, the biggest consumer electronics show of the year, starts Thursday with a bunch of announcements likely coming tomorrow, and, the big question for me is ” What will Research in Motion have to say?”  We know that the BlackBerry PlayBook is coming and that QNX will eventually power a BlackBerry device, however, I’d like to know what else Research in Motion has coming down the pipe, namely in the way of BlackBerry devices.

It’s been 6 months since RIM has released a high-end CMDA BlackBerry and Verizon BlackBerry Storm and Storm2 users especially, with no BlackBerry Storm3 or other Touchscreen device in sight, have seemingly been left out in the cold.  This could be the perfect opportunity for RIM to announce a new CDMA BlackBerry with a touch screen, even if it only runs BlackBerry 6.

There are rumors that Apple may officially announce the Verizon iPhone this week, and, if there is no good news on the BlackBerry front coming out RIM, the BlackBerry platform may see many more BlackBerry users switching platforms compared to those that a going to switch regardless of what RIM has to say…

Let’s hope that RIM has good new for us this week

Post image for Both Apple And RIM Soon To Be Overtaken By Android In U.S. Smartphone Market Share

It’s been just over a month since the iPhone overtook the BlackBerry in total U.S. market share and as we begin 2011, Apple still is in the top spot.  This may not be the case for to long, however, because Android is poised to overtake RIM and Apple with the ridiculous growth that the platform is experiencing.

According to November 2010 data, Apple holds 28.6 percent of the U.S. smartphone market up slightly from 27.9 percent in October. Meanwhile, BlackBerry OS slipped again in November to 26.1 percent, down from 27.4 percent in October and 33.9 percent in June. Android OS closed the distance on Apple and RIM reaching 25.8 percent in November, compared to 22.7 percent in October and 15 percent in June.

It’s pretty clear that Android will over take RIM relatively soon.  This would probably be true for Apple as well if it weren’t for the the fact that the iPhone is soon coming to Verizon.  My gut tells me that the Verizon iPhone will become the fast selling smartphone ever and will probably hold of Android for a bit longer, while increasing the speed of the BlackBerry’s decline as the churn of current Verizon BlackBerry users that switch to the iPhone will probably be at all time high levels.

Skype and Verizon have had an exclusive relationship since the end of March 2010 so makes sense that Skype has announced official support for Verizon BlackBerry devices running BlackBerry 6.  If only, however, Verizon officially sold devices that run BlackBerry 6…  We know that RIM’s latest and and greatest BlackBerry operating system is coming to both the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330, but, Verizon is sure taking their time when it comes to officially releasing it.

Verizon BlackBerry 6 Upgrade Guide

It seems like over the passed couple of weeks there have been several signs and indications that BlackBerry 6 upgrades for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 could drop any time.  More evidence indicating that the new OS could be coming soon are the BlackBerry 6 Upgrade Guides that have been showing up in Verizon Stores.
