Is BlackBerry Messenger Down?

by Robb Dunewood on February 12, 2009 · 9 comments

I have gotten a bunch of Tweets from BlackBerry users accross all carriers saying that BlackBerry Messenger is down and that they cannot send PIN to PIN messages.

Is RIM having yet another outage?

BlackBerry OutageSo, we are now in day two of the Feb. 09 BlackBerry outage and I am sure that I will lay a huge rant on RIM once I hear the excuse as to how “what was never supposed happen again” still hasn’t been resolved some 30 hours or so later.

For now, I will just share with you a conversation overheard by a RIMarkable reader that wishes to remain anonymous between a brand new BlackBerry Bold owner and a Best Buy customer service person.

Dataoutages.com is reporting that Research in Motion is updating BIS 2.4 this coming weekend and there there will be two maintenance windows June 7th and June 8th between 2:00 and 6:00 a.m. EDT on both days. This outage will affect 100% North American BIS users, however, users should only be down for about an hour during this maintenance window.

Another Month, Another BlackBerry Outage

by Robb Dunewood on April 10, 2008 · 16 comments

BlackBerry OutageWell, it looks like BlackBerry users accross North America experienced a BIS outage today.  I’ve been away from the computer all day so I am just now hearing about this, however, there are many reports that the issues have been resolved.

Sad…

I’ve always been told that the first step in dealing with an problem is admitting that you have one. Based on Zach Church’s observations at Gartner’s Wireless and Mobile Summit last week, this sounds exactly like what Research in Motion co-CEO Mike Lazaridis needs to do when it comes to all of the BlackBerry outages Research in Motion has been experiencing as of late.

In an hour long presentation last week, Mr. Lazaridis downplayed and brushed off questions about recent BlackBerry outages.

One attendee who ditched out about halfway through the hour long presentation jostled away with his buddies, calling it the stupidest keynote address he had ever seen and for the next few days, just mentioning Lazaridis around the conference brought smirks and eye-rolling.

I know that many feel that I’ve been overly critical of Research in Motion when it comes to BlackBerry outages, however, having run data centers in a previous life, I just can’t give a company with the resources of Research in Motion a pass because “BlackBerrys are reliable most of the time” or because “a few hours without email won’t kill anyone.”

I am not saying that RIM should come out and tell everyone they suck for having downtime, however, at least be a bit contrite about it and acknowledge that you are at least working on trying to resolve the issues. I have no doubt the RIM is doing this, but, they could go a long way to take the bad taste out of IT administrators mouths by not brushing them off.

RIM… What The %$#%

by Robb Dunewood on February 20, 2008 · 45 comments

I simply cannot believe that Research in Motion is having another outage. It looks like all carriers have been experiencing BIS issues since about 3:00 a.m. this morning. These outages have moved beyond just annoying into the realm of incompetence.

Your competitors have been looking for ways to knock you off your throne atop the Smartphone market for years and you are hand delivering them fodder to do so because it seems as though you have no one who knows how to run a data center on the payroll.

BlackBerry users love BlackBerrys because you build some of the most stable devices the market has seen. Don’t tarnish your image because you can’t figure out how to keep your service up and running on the back end.

A System Upgrade Caused The BlackBerry Outage

by Robb Dunewood on February 14, 2008 · 11 comments

Word on the street is that a “routine” system upgrade is what caused most BlackBerry users to go without BlackBerry service Monday afternoon. I don’t know that I would call an upgrade that could cause most of North, Central, and South America not to be able to send and receive email routine, however, at least we have one more thing to check of the list of things Research in Motion will promise will never happen again when it comes to BlackBerry outages.

Another Month, Another BlackBerry Outage

by Robb Dunewood on December 4, 2007 · 18 comments

Numerous reports have come in stating that there was some type of BIS outage yesterday. BlackBerry Enterprise Server users were not affected. It looks like service started being affected around 6:30 p.m. EST yesterday but was back up at 2:30 a.m. this morning.

If memory serves me correctly, there has been at least one BlackBerry outage each month going back to September.

RIM really has to do better. I know that sometimes the carriers are at fault, but, does it really matter. At the end of the day, when you BlackBerry isn’t getting email, RIM is the company you blame.
