Clearing The Air About BES, BlackBerry10, And Mobile Fusion

If BlackBerry could get as much positive news as it does negative I would be a very happy camper. Unfortunately that’s not the case for the once mighty BlackBerry.

Recently the good folks over at BGR posted an article stating that the current BlackBerry Enterprise Servers would be incompatible with the new BlackBerry10 Devices that are set to hit the market Q1 2013.  While there is some truth to the story, what does this all mean for companies who are looking to transition to BB10 once it’s released?

BlackBerry Enterprise Server For Groupwise 5.0.1 Coming Soon… Possibly…

Even though BlackBerry Enterprise Server has been around for well over a year for Notes and Exchange, BES for Novell GroupWise is still way back on version 4.1.7.  There is potential good news for Novell Shops however.  Rumor has it that RIM is soon to release BlackBerry Eneterprise Server for Novell GroupWise 5 SP1.  According to the release notes BES 5.0.1 for Groupwise is pretty much the same as the other version of BES 5.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 Service Pack 2 (5.0.2) Has Been Released

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 Service Pack 2 has been released and is ready for download.  The big to do in this service pack is the addition of policies and features for employee liable (employee owned) BlackBerry devices.

New BES 5.0 SP 2 features include:

  • Remove corporate content from employee owned devices without changing employees personal information and apps
  • A new Individual Liable Device Policy to let users access personal email and make calls and view email even when the device is locked. It also stops comingling between enterprise data and social networking apps.

Google Apps Connector For BlackBerry Enterprise Server Coming In August

We first heard that Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server was in beta testing back in May and it looks like Google is just about ready to release it to organizations using Google Apps Premier Edition and Education Edition in August.

Google Apps Connector for BES includes the following features:

  • Messages sent to your Gmail inbox are pushed to your BlackBerry within 60 seconds.
  • Emails read/deleted on your BlackBerry are marked as read/deleted in Gmail, and vice-versa.
  • Synchronize BlackBerry folders with labels in Gmail.
  • Search for email addresses and phone numbers of other users on your company domain.
  • View your Google Calendar schedule on your native BlackBerry application, with one-way synchronization from Google Calendar to your BlackBerry device.
  • Contacts in Gmail are automatically synchronized with your BlackBerry address book.

Google Apps Will Soon Integrate With BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Google Apps Connector for BESResearch in Motion and Google are currently testing integration between Google Apps  and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  Google Apps Connector for BES will allow administrators to manage users and apply policies the same way the would for Exchange users while syncing email, contact, and calendar data with Google Apps.

Google Apps Connector for BES offers:

  • Gmail with push support, offline access, read/delete sync, spam filtering, and support for archiving/stars right.
  • One-way sync (GCal > BlackBerry) with Google Calendar, with support for recurring meetings and meeting notification alerts.
  • Two-way sync for contacts.

Google App Connector for BES is currently being beta tested with select companies and universities and will be freely available to Premier/Education customers in July.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1.6 Beta Available To Partners

It looks like native HTML and Rich Text Email support is, once again, on the way for BlackBerry users. Word on the street is that BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 4.1.6 Beta is available to BlackBerry partners.

Things subject to change since BES 4.6.1 is just in beta, however, features as of right now include:

  • HTML Email Support
  • IBM Lotus Domino Document Link Support
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007
  • IBM Lotus Sametime 8
  • IBM Lotus Connections Client
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange Calendar Improvements
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange Hard Delete Enhancements
