Verizon isn’t the only CDMA BlackBerry carrier offering the BlackBerry 8830 world phone. Sprint will start selling the BlackBerry 8830 in July and get this… the Sprint version comes SIM unlocked.

I admit that I have been very critical of Verizon for releasing BlackBerry devices a year, in many cases, after they first appear on the GSM carriers, especially after Mike Lazaridis boasted about how quickly they can port the BlackBerry over to platforms other than GSM.

I, however, have to give credit where credit is due. Set to launch May 14th, it is only taking Verizon about 3 months to release the BlackBerry 8830, a variant of the BlackBerry 8800 which first debuted back in February on Cingular and just a few weeks after the 8800 appeared on T-Mobile. To top it all off, Verizon is offering the BlackBerry 8830 $100 to $150 cheaper than the other carriers.

Not bad at all Verizon…

It’s been rumored for a while but it is a rumor no more. Verizon has officially announced the BlackBerry 8830 which will go on sale May 14th.

The BlackBerry 8830 is the first global CDMA/GSM BlackBerry that will offer always on email in about 60 or so countries. The 8830 can also be used to make calls in over 150 countries, however, the device is locked and Verizon is charging $1.29 to $2.49 per minute depending on what country you are in.

I am sure that we will have more news about the BlackBerry 8830, but, for now, take a look at the full Verizon BlackBerry 8830 press release after the jump.

Update: The Verizon BlackBerry 8830 has been officially announced and will be available May 14th…

We’ve heard a few rumors surrounding the Verizon BlackBerry 8830. The first is that the 8830 will be available in Verizon’s business channel May 14th and available to consumers on May 29th. We also heard that that Verizon BlackBerry 8830 will support microSD cards up to 2GB.

The big rumor, however, is that the BlackBerry 8830 will support iTunes. If this one turns out to be true Verizon will sell a BlackBerry 8830 devices hand over fist.

The Verizon BlackBerry 8830 has been touted as being a “world phone” with both CDMA and GSM support. I know that Verizon and Vodafone have a some sort of relationship so it would make sense for the BlackBerry 8830 to work on various Vodafone networks around the globe, however, if the 8830 is truly a “world phone” it would need to run on multiple GSM carrier networks.

Does the BlackBerry 8830 come unlocked allowing it to run on any GSM network? If so, could you actually use the 8830 on AT&T or T-Mobile here in the U.S.?

If any of you BlackBerry insiders have a clue, let us know via the comments.
