BlackBerry 8800

As we pointed out earlier, not all BlackBerry 8800 devices look alike and according to BlackBerry Forums member muellerlinger, they won’t all be called Indigo either.

The all black BlackBerry 8800 on the left in the picture above is called the BlackBerry Indigo and may hit Europe as earlier as December. The other two… the black on silver device from T-Mobile and the all grey device from Vodafone… are called Crimson and won’t hit shelves until late Q2 of next year.

By now, you may have noticed BlackBerry 8800 pictures from Boy Genius floating around the Internet. What you may not have noticed, however, is just how different the various pictures of the BlackBerry 8800 are.

In the graphic above we have three different photoshopped renderings of what the BlackBerry 8800 may look like. If you look closely you can see that there are a lot more differences than the color of the case.

When the BlackBerry Pearl was first leaked, we heard that RIM was moving away from the specific letter designations for the same device on different carriers. I think that we assumed that they would stop creating different styles of the same device for different carriers as well. If these leaked BlackBerry 8800 renderings hold true, that assumption was probably not the right one.

It looks like Boy Genius is back at as he has posted pics of what we believe to be the BlackBerry 8800 “Indigo” over on EngadgetMobile…

As you can see from the picture of the back, there is no digital camera, however, we can only hope that RIM has QWERTY CameraBerry with this form factor in the works. One thing we know for sure is that RIM is definitely focusing on making their next-gen BlackBerrys look good.

Boy Genius has the deets on a new QWERTY BlackBerry with MP3 capability and are friend Russell Shaw over at BBHub has decrypted them for us.

The new BlackBerry 8800, code named the Gamma Ray will have Bluetooth file transfer, GPS, Push-To-Talk, and a file explorer in addition to a QWERTY keyboard and an MP3 players. Voice Activated Dialing (VAD) and a digital camera are noticeably lacking however.

The BlackBerry 8800 feature set is very preliminary and definitely subject to change. If you remember, the BlackBerry Stealth, a.k.a the BlackBerry Pearl, was thought to be cameraless as well when we first heard about it. Additionally, if the Gamma Ray has a voice recorder it isn’t too far of a stretch to think that it will have VAD as well.
