Mark the date down. On December 7th, 2005, I actually laid my eyes on a BlackBerry 8700c in a store. To be fair I really haven’t gone out of my way to look for them passed a couple of days after Thanksgiving, however, I did happen pass through a Cingular store the other day and they had 4 of them in stock.

The 8700c has been reviewed to death so I will just give one observation based on the 30 seconds that I held the fake display unit. The keys seem to be a bit too close together especially for those of us who have very large hands. I know that sounds kind of strange from coming from someone who absolutely adores BlackBerry 71xx models, however, when you compare to a 7290, the keys definitely have a cramped together feel.

Russell Shaw of BBHub fame has written a very good article for ZDnet.com on problems behind the launch of the BlackBerry 8700c. All I can say is that Russell hit the nail right on the head.

Somehow a pretty big celebrity BlackBerry news tidbit passed me by, however, thanks to RIMarkable reader Mark, we now know that they were giving away BlackBerry 8700c devices to attendees of the American Music Awards last week.

I haven’t payed paid intimate attention to every single BlackBerry release, however, I think that I am pretty safe when I say that no other BlackBerry launch has had as much hoopla surrounding it as did the BlackBerry 8700c. This is why it baffles me that the logistics surrounding the distribution of the BlackBerry 8700c was as poor as it was.

Once the 8700c was officially announced on Nov. 1st, we were told that the device would hit stores almost 3 weeks later on Nov. 21st. About a week before the first in-store date, we heard a rumor that the date was going to slip. The date did slip, however, we heard from a Cingular spokesman that the BlackBerry 8700c would be available on Black Friday in Best Buy and Cingular stores. I went to 6 different stores that should have had the 8700c but none of them did.

I only hope that the logistics around the availability of the BlackBerry 7130e are not as bad as the 8700c.

The word from Cingular spokesman John Kampfe was that “the 8700c BlackBerry will start selling at it’s U.S. stores and consumer electronics retailer Best Buy starting Friday.” Over the last two days I have been to 4 Best Buys and 2 Cingular stores and no one has the BlackBerry 8700c.

As far as the Best Buys go, only one person at one store has even heard of the 8700c but didn’t know when they would get it in stock. One Cingular store sales person told me that should have it any day and the second store I went to didn’t even know that the 8700 has been released. In all fairness to Cingular, the second store I went to was one of those little kiosks in the mall and I really didn’t expect the person working there to have a clue as to when the 8700c would be available in the store. I doubt that the kiosk would ever carry a BlackBerry as they are priced out of the impulse buy range that those little mall kiosks rely on.

So, I am just wondering, has anyone seen or even bought a BlackBerry 8700c in or from a Cingular Store or Best Buy? It seems kind of like the cat the eats out of my garbage can at night. I know that it is out there, I just can’t find it.

The BlackBerry 8700c was supposed to be available in stores November 21st but last minute modifications saw that date come and go. Even with the slight delay, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and Cingular made sure that the BlackBerry 8700 would be in stores on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Cingular spokesman John Kampfe said the 8700C BlackBerry will start selling at its U.S. stores and at consumer electronics retailer Best Buy starting Friday — the start of the traditional gift-giving season. It was originally slated for release Nov. 21, but “minor modifications” delayed the start date, he said, without offering any specifics.

The release date for the BlackBerry 8700c from Cingular that was officially announced on November 1st may slip according to the Cingular rep of the BBHub source that first clued Russell Shaw into the launch parties thrown to let the world know about the BlackBerry 8700c.

According to the source, the rep told him (the BBHub source) the scheduled November 21st launch of the Blackberry 8700c will be briefly delayed due to network improvements by Cingular. Enhancements to the handheld code are necessary and will require additional testing.

Man, Russell. You get all the good scoops…
