BlackBerry 8700

Rumor has it that a T-Mobile BlackBerry 8700 will hit the shelves in the U.S. sometime in the second half of April.

As we get ready to enter into the new year we know that the period of exclusivity that Cingular has on the BlackBerry 8700 will soon come to an end. The question that I have is “What carrier will offer the 8700 next?” Other than a rumor that a T-Mobile branded BlackBerry, presumably called the BlackBerry 8700t, is coming out in the Feb./March timeframe, the rumor mill has been quiet.

A few weeks we asked a question about a BlackBerry 8700t from T-Mobile possibly being on the way. We know that the period of exclusivity will eventually expire on the Cingular BlackBerry 8700c and other carries will start to offer the BlackBerry 8700 line eventually.

This brings us to the question of if the BlackBerry 8700 will do as well on T-Mobile as it will on some of the other carriers that offer highspeed broadband access? I currently own a BlackBerry 7100t. I am, however, switching to a 7130e on the Verizon network and not staying with T-Mobile, upgrading to the 7105t because of the inability to tether the 7105t to my laptop as a highspeed modem.

I must admit that I’ve been pleased with T-Mobile for the most part. I am only speaking for myself but I haven’t had any problems with the service that are worth complaining about. I wouldn’t hesitate to upgrade to another T-Mobile BlackBerry if they offered broadband access, but, since they don’t, I am willing to switch over the Verizon in a heartbeat to get it.

The BlackBerry 8700 line promotes it’s faster more powerful processor, expanded memory, and ability to work with highspeed broadband networks. Would a BlackBerry 8700t kind of be seen as a dud if one of the major new features wasn’t available because of the network?

The T-Mobile BlackBerry 8700g has been released

There is a rumor floating around that T-Mobile will be coming out with their branded version of the BlackBerry 8700 in Feb/March time frame. A BlackBerry Forums member sat next to a Research in Motion executive with an unbranded BlackBerry 8700. “I asked him how much it would take to have him remove his SIM and sell me his device… to no avail.”

The BlackBerry Forums member was able to get the the Feb/March launch timeframe and one other piece of information that deserves it’s own post. According to the RIM executive, there will be a consumer version BlackBerry that will have a camera and MP3 coming out in Q3. I find this one a bit harder to believe but time will definately tell.

BlackBerry Cool has new real BlackBerry 8700 picture submitted to them by someone who claims to have used the ‘BlackBerry Electron’ for a few weeks of trial.

I took this pic with my Nokia 6820, so the quality is horrible. I used the device, made calls, sent emails etc. Its a great product. The screen is unbelievably sharp, and covered by a hard glass/plastic cover, not the same vulnerable screen as on previous blackberries.

After all the speculation and all the rumors, one of Research in Motion’s poorest kept secrets, the BlackBerry 8700, what we have known for months as the BlackBerry Electron, was a not officially announced. It looks like all the BlackBerry lovers eagerly awaiting the release of the most anticipated BlackBerry release since the 7100T will have to wait just a bit longer.

The non-announcement is not as bad as it seems. It’s kind of like the last day of school. We know it’s coming but just can’t wait for it to get here. During yesterday’s earnings call, which you can listen to here, Jim Balsillie, RIM co-CEO, said that Research in Motion’s new device roadmap is fundamentally focused in late October and early November so we know that the official announcement has to be in the coming weeks.
