Sprint/Nextel To Discontinue the BlackBerry 7520

April 26, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 6 Comments

It looks like Sprint/Nextel is paving the way for the BlackBerry 8830 set to hit Sprint store shelves in July by discontinuing the long selling BlackBerry 7520 in May.

It will be interesting to see if companies that are trying to hang on to the Nextel network and their coast to coast walkie-talkie like push to talk feature that made Nextel famous will switch over to the BlackBerry 8830 or buy up as many BlackBerry 7520 devices that they can find out in the channel.

Time will definitely tell. I just hope that the Nextel diehards start to realize that the network near and dear to their hearts is going away and that they should, if they haven’t already, start making plans to move…

Well, it is about time; and they should have done it alot sooner. Though the business side should not have to move on without it. There is supposed to be a new version out that will have the PTT function. If they can do it for AT&T then why not for the company that started the whole thing?

I can’t see the PTT feature ever going away. I run a construction company. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there that use the push to talk feature religiously. As politically uncorrect as it may sound, there are many guys out there that I would never give cell service to… in fear of excessive phone use. PTT gives us the luxury of not having to worry about that happening. At the same time, I know my guys are in touch.

Its now June and I believe you can still get a 7520 from Sprint/Nextel… they are now offering a few phones that run on sprints network but work on the IDEN network of Nextel for the two-way feature so hopefully a blackberry with such functionality isnt far off. I havent read much on this site concerning Sprint/Nextel that has come to fruition though so who knows… Where the heck is Blackberry Connect?!

Um, no… That phone came out on Nextel like 6 years ago or so before any BlackBerry had a camera on it…
