BlackBerry App World 3.0

We’ve known since last week that Research in Motion is getting ready to roll out BlackBerry App World 3.0.  The BlackBerry App World webstore has already been updated and RIM has made a few changes to the Vendor Portal as well.  A complete overhaul of the web client is coming, and, according to BBNews.pl, this is what it is going to look like.

BlackBerry Error Message

According to a BGR report, Research in Motion is pressuring carriers into releasing BlackBerry devices before they pass carrier Technical Acceptance in an effort to try to salvage dwindling BlackBerry sales due, not only to competition from rival platforms like Android and the iPhone, but, also to the lack of new BlackBerry devices on the market and delays in models slated to come out this year.

It has been well over a year since RIM announced the current wave of BlackBerry devices available on the market, and, even though BlackBerry World, RIM’s biggest show of the year, was back at the beginning of May, only one new device, the touch BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 was even officially announced for this year.  To make matters worse, RIM said in their earnings call last week that the new touch BlackBerry Bold will be delayed beyond the back-to-school shopping season.

To make matters worse for RIM, the company has stated that it is still planning to release BlackBerry devices that will run QNX, RIM’s next-generation operating system currently featured on the BlackBerry Playbook, in early 2012.  Further delay of new BlackBerry 7 devices could result in consumers that opt to skip BlackBerry 7 devices all together instead waiting for the new wave QNX powered devices coming out next year.

BlackBerry Bold 9790

When it comes to new BlackBerry devices that have actually been officially announced, the upcoming touch BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 is the only device new phone that Research in Motion has actually said is coming out.  Also rumored to be coming out this year are a full touch screen BlackBerry Monaco / Monza, a touch BlackBerry Curve, and even a full touch screen Curve. What we didn’t know, however,  is that RIM may be working on a second touch BlackBerry Bold device, the touch Bold 9790, and it  appears to be an upgrade to the BlackBerry Bold 9780.

Whether or not the Bold 9790 is just a prototype or a device that RIM actually plans to release remains to be seen.  German website Reality Mirror was able to get a few images of the 9790, but, other than stating that ‘it runs BlackBerry 7 really fast‘, we know only that device has a touch screen, NFC, 8GB of memory, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

Post image for BlackBerry Touch Monaco/Monza Could Launch As BlackBerry Volt

Rumor has it that the upcoming, but, yet to be officially announced full touch screen BlackBerry Monaco (9850) and BlackBerry Monza (9860) could be branded the BlackBerry Volt.  N4BB is reporting that multiple sources are claiming that the new 1.2GHz processor, 768 MB RAM, 3.7-in touchscreen devices will be called the BlackBerry Volt, however, they haven’t yet found any internal slides indicating this naming convention.

RIM is also said to be tossing around the idea of calling the next wave of full touch screen BlackBerry devices the BlackBerry Torch continuing the branding from the QWERTY slider with a full touch screen introduced last year.  Personally, I just want the darn thing to come out…

T-Mobile touch BlackBerry Bold 9900

Only one handset, the new touch BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, was announced at BlackBerry World a couple of weeks ago.  Although they offered no release date other than ‘later this year’, T-Mobile announced their intentions to carry the Bold 4G 9900 on their network almost immediately after RIM unveiled the device.  Most rumors up until now, point to a release of the Bold 9900 ‘sometime this summer, but This is My Next‘s Chris Ziegler has posted T-Mobile’s 2011 roadmap and it looks like the touch BlackBerry Bold 9900 is hitting August 19th followed by the, still to be officially announced, BlackBerry Apollo, which is rumored to be a touch BlackBerry Curve.

BlackBerry Bold Touch coming eventually

When we first heard that the touch BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 would be the only new BlackBerry device officially announced at BlackBerry World we hoped that BGR’s sources were wrong.  Well, they weren’t, and, to make matters worse, rumors are now indicating that the phone they did announce won’t be out until mid August at the earliest and, that the rest of the devices rumored to be in RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry line up won’t be officially announced until the fall at BlackBerry DevCon.  RIM is essentially a phone manufacturer that appears to not be manufacturing phones….  What the heck is going on up in Waterloo?

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone

Unfortunately this latest rumor was a hoax. None of this, not even the social media event in Toronto was true. We may still see cross platform BlackBerry Messenger clients this year, but, this particular rumor about April 26th is bull…

We heard some pretty credible rumors back at the beginning of the month the Research in Motion is taking BlackBerry Messenger cross-platform, first on Android, soon to be followed by the iPhone.  We’ve just heard new rumors that Research in Motion co-CEO, Jim Balsille, yesterday at a Social Media conference in Toronto, said that BBM would be coming to the iPhone on April 26th.

RIM had a Social Media conference today in Toronto, and my entire college business and marketing class was invited to the event. RIM’s co-ceo Jim Balsillie revealed that they plan to bring BBM and “other services” to iPhone on April 26 via the app store. Major news networks are expected to pick up on this very soon! Balsillie also revealed that they plan to release an update to the app this summer which will take advantage of a new “notification system”!!!”

Just yesterday I wrote a post stating that RIM Needs To Take BBM Cross Platform Sooner Rather Than Later.  If BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone is coming April 26th, this may be exactly what RIM is doing…

Post image for Rumor: RIM Bringing BlackBerry Messenger To Android… Eventually To iOS

According to BGR sources Research in Motion is bringing BlackBerry Messenger first to Android, and, eventually to iOS.  All the details like when this will happen and how much, or, even if RIM will charge users of BBM on third party platroms is still kind of sketchy.  BBM on Android, however, is definitely a go and we should see it launch sometime this year.

BGR’s sources say that BlackBerry Messenger for Android is being worked on first because it is easier for RIM to develop and integrate this type of solution on an open platform, but, the plan is for the company to create a BlackBerry Messenger for iOS client eventually…

What do you think?  Is this a good move for RIM?
