BlackBerry.com Website Makeover

Research in Motion yesterday unveiled a brand new look for the BlackBerry.com webpage.  The new site has a javascript slider with 3 different pages that all feature the new BlackBerry Torch.  I am still deciding if I like the new look more than I did the old one.

RIM Acquires DataViz

DataViz, maker of Documents to Go, put out a press release letting Palm WebOs users know that they will not be releasing a version of Documents to Go for WebOS.  DataViz makes it seem like the lack of support from Palm is a big reason as to why the suite of applications initially made popular on Palm OS won’t be coming to WebOS.  I wonder, however, if Research in Motion’s rumored acquisition of DataViz is even a bigger reason…

BlackBerry Messenger

Since Research in Motion officially released BlackBerry Messenger 5 users have reported issues with the BBM icon disappearing on various builds of the BlackBerry OS.  To make a long story short, BBM 5 isn’t compatible with certain builds of the BlackBerry operating system.

To address this problem, Research in Motion has released KB article KB22308 ,which, basically, just lets you know that RIM is aware of the issue but that they haven’t found a resolution or have a time frame for when they will.  RIM also updated the BlackBerry Messenger page on BlackBerry App World:

  1. Before downloading, please back up your contact list by displaying the menu within BlackBerry Messenger – Options – Back Up. (Available for BBM 5.0 and 5.0.1 users)
  2. Please ensure that you are using RIM or carrier approved BlackBerry® Device Software to avoid compatibility issues that may result in loss of the BBM icon.  For more information, read article KB23968 (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB23968)
  3. After installing the new version of BBM, please restart your device.

Post image for 5 More Reasons Why RIM Should Build A Device That Runs Android

A couple of years ago I wrote a fairly popular post titled  ”5 Reasons That RIM Should Make A BlackBerry That Runs Android“.  Today, I feel even more strongly about this so I am doing a follow up with 5 More Reasons RIM Should Build a Device That Runs Android. I’ve changed gears just a bit and am making the distinction between BlackBerry and device in this update, but, at the end of the day, RIM is a company that makes most of its revenue by selling hardware and they need to get on board when it comes to Android regardless of if they call such a device a BlackBerry or something else…

RIM Drops From 1st To 33rd

What a difference a year makes…  Last year when looking at Fortune’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies, Research in Motion topped the list.  This year, however, RIM has dropped down to 33rd on the list.  RIM has dropped from 1st o 9th on the Fastest Growing  Technology companies as well.

Something tells me that unless we see some major changes in the direction that Research in Motion is going we will see another big drop on the 2011 list assuming RIM even makes the cut.  When it comes to consumers that buy smartphones, unless you just want a BlackBerry, there are much more compelling options available.  Depending on which report your read most BlackBerry users don’t even want new BlackBerry devices.  That can’t bode well for RIM…

BlackBerry With External Antenna

Word on the street is that Research in Motion is working on new BlackBerry devices that will sport external antennas, you know, like the one that they iPhone 4 has, except, they will actually work.  You see, contrary to the the popular belief of those born after Regan left office, mobile phones with external antennas was not a new idea created by Apple.  Apple just did a piss poor job at implementing it.

In the picture above you see a BlackBerry 9100 with an external antenna, and, rumor has it that there are a bunch of new model designs sporting this design.  RIM, for years, has been known for superior antenna design, however, even if they weren’t you could bet your last dollar that any device with even a hint of the antenna issues that the iPhone 4 has would never see the light of day.

The AT&T BlackBerry Torch 9800 is now available.  The Torch (a.k.a BlackBerry Slider) is the first BlackBerry device to feature a full touch screen as well as a vertical slide-out keyboard.  The BlackBerry Torch is also the first device to run RIM’s BlackBerry 6, RIM’s new operating system featuring the WebKit BlackBerry Browser.

You can pick the AT&T BlackBerry Torch up for $199.99 on a 2-year contract or $499.99 with no plan.  Head over to AT&T’s BlackBerry Torch page to get more information…

The BlackBerry Platform

There is no question that Research in Motion is doing everything they can to make the BlackBerry more popular with consumers.  The currently running BBM commercials are in indication of that.  It is good to know, however, that RIM isn’t ditching that date that brought them to the dance…  Business users.

Say what you want about the iPhone and Android devices, but, when it comes to smartphones used in the corporation, the BlackBerry reigns supreme.  The BlackBerry Platform video shows you a lot of reasons why that is, and, continues to be the case…

Special BlackBerry Event

Research in Motion and AT&T are holding a joint press event next Tuesday, August 3rd, in NYC where it is expected that the BlackBerry 9800 Slider running BlackBerry 6 will be officially announced.

The BlackBerry 9800 Slider is currently rumored to hit AT&T on August 15th.  If that indeed turns out to be the launch date, it will be interesting to see the type of marketing that AT&T and RIM put behind the 9800.
