Although it was not officially confirmed, we heard over the weekend that Research in Motion bought DataViz, makers of the popular Documents to Go productivity suite which allows smartphone users to view, edit, and create word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs, for a rumored $50 million.  Yesterday, however, in a statement to CNET, RIM confirmed the purchase:

RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the transaction was not material to RIM in the context of RIM’s financial results.

Dataviz did announce that they would not be creating version of Documents to Go for the webOS platform, however, the productivity suite is extremely popular on other platforms such as Windows Mobile, iOS, and Android.  The revenue that Dataviz makes off of these other platforms is not insignificant, so, the big question is what will RIM do for other platforms now that they own the company…
