Palm Gets “A Good One” In On RIM

Even a company that is dwindling away into nothingness like Palm that is known to build some of the buggiest PDA’s known to man can get a good cheap shot in when you can’t keep your service up for more than a few months at a time.

Sure, you’ve got to reboot your Windows Mobile running Treo once or twice a day, however, when it’s up, you can pretty much send and receive email without worry.

    Especially considering there’s good old reliable windows at BOTH ends of that communications line. And we all know that Exchange is about as reliable as a chocolate fireguard. Covered in Petrol. In a bakers oven. During the great fire of London.

    And windows mobile + Exchange ? Secure? I dont think so..

    Still, you can see why they’re doing this. Top selling business smartphone is the crackberry. Followed by iPhone. Then MS. Then Palm.

    I’d rather take my lumps with BB and the occasional downtime that lose that all important phone call because my system crashed.

    Thought, you also bring up a good thing, one can argue that when it comes right down to it other devices like windoz mobile Palm’s or the various other WM players, while not as well designed in most of our opinions get the job done and don’t have the KNOWN weakness of being a slave to a single NOC. RIM’s self made single choke point, a proprietary single NOC is not acceptable.

    Fanboys will continue to piss, moan and argue but those in the know, have seen the reality. Because of RIM’s repetitive system outages it’s clear that our BB’s are not the mission critical devices which some think they are.

    Plain and simple all other devices that don’t depend on a systems like RIM’s proprietary, single choke point, single NOC, design are not paper weights when the network goes down. Palm’s statement is TOO TRUE. Palm is just one of the other smartphone manufactures which will benefit from RIM’s repetitive outages.

    “I don’t know what happened, I don’t care what happened. They need to save their excuses for someone who cares,” Gold said.

    “Enterprises that really need e-mail responses in less than eight hours to run their businesses should have a backup for the BlackBerry, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney….. They should also set up an independent system to notify them whether an important contact has received or replied to an e-mail message, Dulaney said.”

    Gartner’s Dulaney had harsh words for RIM, saying he had given the company a break after last year’s failure.

    “This does not appear to be a mission-critical system with the highest service-level agreements, and therefore, to entrust … that a message will get to the end point is being a bit foolhardy,” Dulaney said. He advises enterprises that are worried about dependability to ask RIM for details of its backup system and make their own decisions.”

    Off the subject, but just read that VZW is going with an unlimited calling plan for 99 per month. Wondering if you heard anything as well, and if so, how it would include the BB plan. I’m guessing 128.99 with the BB plan. Would be curious if you heard or seen it to. It’s been advertised on USA Today and supposed to launch 2/17 according to BGR.

    I’ll leave the off topic thread crapping award for bluehorseshoe. Whats knee slapping is the thread is about Palm’s ad and comments posted about RIM’s system failures, then as so saddly typical bluehorseshoe thread craps and takes it to a personal, rude, and crude level. But then again we’ve all learn thats all bluehorseshoe is capable of as his ignorance is injected into each and every of his posts here at RIMarkable.

    The real shame is because of bluehorseshoe’s thread crapping FUD, childish, fanboy games a real discussion about the truth in Palm’s words verses the quality of service RIM is capable of during their “uptime” was never able to be started. In some ways I agree with Palm pointing out there are other ways for consumers to get email and not have to rely on RIM’s self made proprietary, single choke point, single NOC. In some ways IMO automatic “pull” mail especially if the mail account is IMAP is just as good if not better than RIM’s push system. I also like that all data is not going thru the RIM servers for both speed and reliablity. Now that I’m not browsing just on my BB but also with full HTML on a iPhone web browsing on my BB is not really acceptable. With the ease of use with automatic “pull” email and not depending on RIM’s proprietary, single choke point, single NOC justifying RIM’s monthly fee is getting harder and harder to do. Coupled that with the outages every couple months turning our blackberry’s into a dataless cell phones. Palm’s got a good idea, which IMO at many times is a more reliable system which is neither proprietary, nor relies on a single choke point, single NOC. RIM, when the system is up does email well, but as other devices (hardware and software) advance, and the reality of RIM’s proprietary, single choke point, single NOC failures are weighed it’s IMO easy to see people leaving their BB’s behind for other devices which can provide the same if not better service while not relying on RIM’s proprietary, single choke point, single NOC for all their data needs.

    Palm with it’s recent Ad points out just another piece of REALITY, RIM’s proprietary, single choke point, single NOC is not at all mission critical and there are other solutions which don’t rely on a proprietary, single choke point, single NOC which IT’s will find can be a more mission critical device or at very least use a better system for reliable data.

    Robb posting a thread for discussion again exposes RIM’s problems proprietary, single choke point, single NOC. A thread which divides those in the know which want to discuss REALITY from ignorant fanboys such as bluehorseshoe who’s mental capacity only allows thread craps, ego stroking posts, and worse attacking and name calling those in the know who discuss TRUTH and REALITY instead of trying desperately to hide the TRUTH and REALITY about RIM or worse ignorant bluehorseshoe’s ultimate wet dream verizon and it’s well known anti-consumer actions which include a http://www.powderpuffmarkable.com definition of the word “unlimited” and worse verizon’s crippling and feature and function removal on customers devices.

Palm’s AD points out other methods which are available which how they are designed they are more mission critical.

    Perhaps all parties need to simmer down a bit.

    I would echo the call to “hellno” to make his comments shorter; on the net it’s usually bad form to post such lengthy responses, as it tends to lose reader interest.

    The bottom line is that we can agree to disagree on these issues; they are fun issues, not life changing ones.

    The BB is a great device and system and is by far and away king of corporate email. However, like all products, it can be improved, and certainly RIM should beef up its server redundancies to avoid these embarrassing service outages.

    The iPhone is a very cool and innovative device, a real game changer. But it will not threaten the BB in the corporate world any time soon.

    As to Palm, well, their products are sad these days, simply outdated. They are not really a serious competitor to either RIM or Apple, IMHO. However, even they manage to sell some units.
